Thanks Jay for the reply. I've always thought your trophy photos were top notch, and was just curious.

Jay, Congratulations again on the Super Raffle ram. I have a question. Your still photos of your clients and their trophies are always well done. They're sharp, well exposed, and everything a trophy photo should be, I was wondering what kind of still camera you use and its normal settings.

Sorry I asked!

Binocular tripod

Thanks for the reply Jay. elkhunter, it does give some food for thought. -
Jay, In reading your post on scouting for the raffle sheep hunt you have a device on your tripod handle. Is this a drive of some sort for small adjustments while using your binoculars?

Swivelhead, I don't have the book Kofa Kings, I do have Saad's book Desert Bighorns. I'll have to find myself a copy. Desert Bighorns is really well done. I found a photo and a short mention of Surprise Canyon in the Bighorn book. Thanks for the head's up. Meanwhile I'm drawing a blank on getting to see this mounted head I was told was the Dee's ram.

Many years ago (60's I think), there was a large Desert Bighorn Sheep taken by a man named Louis Dees. I remember hearing about it when I lived in Arizona. I recently ran into a man who claimed to have a relative who now has the mounted head. Is there any place I can search to find out information on the hunt and maybe Mr. Dees. I'm not sure where to go with this, but it seems interesting. I told the man I would seek out information. Thanks for any help.

This is from an early Arizona Record Book.

Great video, thanks for sharing. Looks like a really good pack of hounds. Nice lion also.

I know this is not a photo, but thought folks would find it interesting. This is from a September 1953 ad in the old Arizona Wildlife Sportsman magazine. You've got to love the prices. I scanned the inside cover. I remember going with dad to Stapley's to buy things. Anyway enjoy, I hope it's alright to put it here Amanda.

kidso, In all his books and the photos I've seen of him, he was never without his pipe. I understand about the pipe smoking Santa Claus. I remember him also from my youth. Ah modern times. I had some young folks in my den the other day, who could'nt understand why I had so many books, much less take time to read them. We had a quick lesson in imagination and the adventures contained in books. I think they all left staring at their smart-phones, not convinced books were all that great.

Grancel Fitz was one of the founding members of the current Boone and Crockett measuring system. As a book collector of old hunting books, I acquired a book of his. Inside was a transparency showing his measuring a polar bear skull in 1956. This is a scan of that slide that was sent to B&C by myself for their Grancel Fitz library. I added the information to make the photo more informative. This was truly a rare find. Mr. Fitz was a famous commercial photographer in New York City and most always had his medium format camera with him. I hope you enjoy this rare photo of a pioneer in North American big game hunting.

Thanks to all.

I took this bear after an all day run deep in a canyon. The hunt was in October 2012. I'm not too quick posting photos.

I remember when they helped us here in New Mexico. Our prayers are with you in Arizona, and to the families of these brave men. Adios amigos, and thank you for the impact your lives made on many people. Mine included. God Bless

Thanks, more information for the file. Interesting it was in a Texas paper.

AZBOb, I looked also in my 1970 Arizona Wildlife Trophy book. I'm going to see if I can get a look at the mount. I have the photo from the record book. Apparently it's been in a basement or something. I don't have enough of the story yet. It makes for some interesting detective work though. From the photo it looks like a wonderful ram. I really hate to think of it disgarded in a basement or something. Thanks for the reply. I also looked in Saad's book on Arizona sheep, nothing.

kidso, just for you information these three different color phase bears were taken about 10 miles apart in the same season. One all black, one dark brown, and one cinnamon. I looked up some information about why so few all black bears here. It appears your ideas in your earlier post were apparently what a lot of other folks think also.
-
Rule of thumb for black bear. The width of the front paw +1" equals squared hide. I think that's right.
-
Thanks for the compliments on the bear. I appreciate them. That's an interesting train of thought on the color phase kidso. I'll have to look into that more. Also, thanks for the young man compliment. I figure as long as the good Lord gives me the ability, I'll still hunt. tjhunt2, I love your dog in your avatar.
-
kidso, The bear in your avatar looks to be all black. Nice bear, we don't get many all black bears. Yes, I was pleased with the color. We're doing a stand-up motion type mount, to really show off the fur and color. He was right at six feet. For a man pushing seventy, it was all I could do to pull it off. Was your bear a desert bear?

Jeff, sorry I saw your post from last year just today. Books by Bob Householder in my library are: Hunting and Guiding for Desert Sheep in Arizona Diary of a Big Game Hunter (The stories of his collecting all North American big game animals) The Grizzly Bear in Arizona The Black Bear in Arizona The Wolf in Arizona Hunting the Arizona Javelina Bill is correct in that all these are self-published. When I lived in Arizona back in the sixities I would run into him now and again. I believe that's how I obtained them. Yes, it's very unfortunate how he ended up. There's absolutely no reason at all for his behavior. Never the less he played a part in the Arizona hunting community back then.
