I desperately hate Muzzy broadheads due to flimsy materials and lack of straightness, however they have been proven killers for 3 decades. Bears are not any tougher than a big mule deer. They have a big chest cavity, however it is deep from spine to sternum, not from side to side. Any good moderate deer setup should suffice.

Agreed, shot placement is the determining factor... however it is still against the law (R12-4-304) Bows with a standard pull of 30 or more lbs, using arrows with broadheads no less than 7/8 inch in width with metal cutting edges.

when folks finally say to themselves "I'm not paying that, this is stupid" the prices will drop. I too have been guilty of "chicken little" disorder. I won't fight the crazy prices anymore, I just won't buy until it gets to be reasonable. Hopefully, eventually folks will realize the sky is indeed not falling and life can resume.

the ability to hunt completely unpressured birds. With so few tags you dont get the circus that goes with all of the people. When you have completely unpressured birds, they really respond well to calls. Nothing like it. If you could go elk hunting to a destination that had not been hunted or hunted extremely lightly, and you knew that you would not run into any other hunters, I'd bet you'd have the time of your life. You would probably be ran over as soon as you hit a cow chirp. Same thing

since 1995: 4 rifle cow tags, 1 archery cow tag, and 2 early archery bull tags. Not one of them was what most folks would think of as a premium tag.

you can always tune an over spined arrow. They will also be heavier and carry KE and momentum better. I vote go stiffer.

How big of a gun do you need for protection?
elpepe25 replied to Pine Donkey's topic in The Campfire
Good 1. The words "too big" and "gun" should never collide in the same sentance. -

Coupla years ago I called the coon and carp and spoke with the "predation expert' biologist. He stated that on old skulls without tell tale teeth marks, that are measurable it'd be hard to determine cause of death. I asked about the crushed/missing noses as well and he stated that those are by far the most fragile bones in the skull with the most surface area for the elements to break down (makes sense) so that is why a lot of skulls are missing those parts. He also went on to say that the favored method of lions it to go after the base of the skull and neck junction...so maybe you could find evidence on the first vertibrae of teeth marks.
