    NASTY buck

This buck was killed by a friend of mine Todd Smith in mexico a few years back. It grossed right around 145. I just did some replicas of it for him. Its a one-of-a-kind buck! Todd is a great hunter and has taken some awsome bucks over the years. All of his hard work and hunting payed off on this Sonoran Monster!

Thats a real shame man. Thats a once in a lifetime kind of deer. Has your friend had a chance to talk personally with the guy the tagged it?

    153" and change!!!!!!!

The hunter did get some footage of the buck feeding but no kill shot. This buck is truly amazing. I probablly picked it up 1000 times while at the ranch house and still cound'nt belive it. As great as the picks look, they do it no justice. What a pig. I hope to get a replica done, and I will have it to show to all the Az guys at the shows. You guys can thank Joe for not getting the kill on film. ( just kidding Joe, but really, you should have been there) Good Hunting, Derek

GIANT 150+ buck killed in Sonora

It wasnt really that big of a deal that the deer got posted. My hunter that killed it is well known in the hunting world and just asked that we keep it on the down low untill the buck had been officialy scored. I just got the official score yesterday. He grosses 153 1/8. It was killed in Sonora on Dec 31 I have some other pics besides the field pics that really show all of his points and show off the mass. Pics do this buck no justice. I am having a replica done and will have it to show soon. Sorry to cause such an uproar about not showing pics earlier but like everything on the web it was made into a way bigger deal then it really was. Heading back to the ranch we killed it on and mabye next week I will have another pic just like it! (yea right) By the way, the buck was aged at 4 1/2 years old. Guess we should have passed him and shot him when he was 180 Good hunting Derek

    New law in Mexico

I just returned from Hemosillo yesterday from looking at some new ranches for Coues and Mullies and there was a Outfitter meeting trying to pass a law that american outfitters could not buy, sell or guide hunts without going through a Mexixo outfitter. The reason for thier complant was that its hard for the mexico outfitters to sell the hunts because they dont have the connections to sell the tags for high doller like the American outfitters can. My friend from down there called me about 8:30 tonight and said that they passed the law tonight. I was just wondering if any of you other guides or hunters had heard anything about this or had any suggestions on how to fight this. There are alot of good mexican outfitters but the majoraty of the ones I have dealt with are all about the $ and not managing the deer herds and I am not willing to deal with them. Let me know if anybody knows anything. If I hear anything new I will post it, Thanks

    New law in Mexico

Thanks Kirk and Ivan for all the info. It makes me more comfortable knowing that. It was probably just a rumor that got started and you know how that goes. About the antlers, I have seen alot of people with antlers they are bringing back from Mexico and was wondering how they were doing it. Apparently they are doing it Illeagly. I talked to a guy that said in Agua Prieta they told him at the border that sheds were fine as long as it wasnt an intact skull. I told him he was wrong but he still brings them back evry year.

    New law in Mexico

Sorry guys the 3 in my last entry was supposed to be " set # of guides" thats why Im an outfitter and not a secretary! By the way Kirk, have you ever had any problem bringing sheds across the border?

    New law in Mexico

The difference is that the rancher cant listed as the guide or the tag broker. They were talking about having a set 3 of mexico outfitters that the hunts had to go through. But none of this may be true. I was just checking to see if you guys had heard anything. You would know the laws better then I would. I just know that alot of the guides down there are upset cause they cant compete with us for the tags cause they have a problem selling them so they were raising heck. I just dont want there to be another ahnd in the purchasing of my tags, Derek

    Units 27,28,29,30a

Before the introduction of our wonderful wolves 27 was in my opinion one of the best units for monster bucks in the state. As Ive watch other units I hunt get better and better over the last 10 years 27 has only gotten worse. Thank the enviromentalist and the wolves for that. There are still some great bucks in 27 you just have to work harder. 29 and 27 both have the genes to grow some huge non-typical bucks, the only problem with 29 is access but if you put in your homework you can get to some great areas and take a great buck. 28 is one of the worst units in the state for Coues but its one of my favorites. There are not very many whitetail and they are only in small pockets throughout the unit. This is not the hunt for you if you want to see a lot of deer, and plan on alot of scouting if you want a good buck. it is a great unit if you have alot of time to hunt and want to see minimal hunters

    New law in Mexico

I dont have any othe info on the law. I heard from a few people when I was down there that they were meeting to discuss it. When I got back to Az on Sunday night I got a call from my buddy who runs a hunting mag and guides down there and he told me the law has passed. That is all I know, He is a pretty reliable sorce but I still dont know if its true or not. I am going to contact him and a few other people tonight and see whats going on. I will post any new info I hear. Kirk you probably have more contacts then I do down there so Im sure you can find out something, Thanks guys, Derek

    Deer Sightings

It all depends on the areas you are hunting. I have some places in unit with low deer numbers like in units 28 and 30b that I may only see 15-20 deer a day. Some of my favorite units it isnt uncommon to see up to 100 deer in a day if you are in the right place at the right time. I had a day in sept this year that me and my partner saw over 40 coues bucks in a day! It was an awsome day. The deer were bunched up because of the lack of water in the area. I filmed most of them. The largest of these bucks will score in the low 120s. He is a monster. I have footage of this buck hard-horned also later in the year. In mexico depending on which ranch I am on and how thick the cover is I usually see between 50-80 deer a day. The key thing is scouting pre-season and not wasting your time in a place that doesnt hold good deer numbers.

    Mexico-January

I own and operate Coues Crazy Outfitters and I hear so many horror stories from hunters that are reluctant on booking a guided hunt because of past hunts with outfitters. There are alot of guides that make promises that they cant keep. Mexico can be really bad because there are brokers that have never seen these ranches they are selling tags for. They will tell you anything to sell the tag. Make sure before booking any hunt that the guide has knolledge of the ranch. There are alot of ranchers that sell alot more tags then the ranch has been servied for, so by the time the Jan hunters show up the ranch has been hunted out. The main thing is do your homework and make sure your outfitter is legit before forking out the money.Ive been lucky to get some great ranches and good ranchers and havnt had a problem with our ranches being over hunted. If anyone has any ?s or comments about Mexico you can E-mail me at CouesCrzy@aol.com. Hopefully with people talking about problems like this we can stop others from getting ripped off.

    Monster Galiuro Mtn Bucks

It is crazy how rumors get started. I heard from about 10 different people about this and all of their stories were different. The only thing that I can think that got it started was people knew I was watching a couple of big bucks and I showed some footage to a few people and they told people about it.Hopefully by next year we will have enough good footage to finish our Coues vidio and then everyone can see some of these bucks.Intill then Ill just keep watching them and mabye we will be lucky enough to take one of the monsters next year. Take care and keep chasing thoughs Coues
