The last couple years Becker and I have been running around in the desert for countless hours, and training some young hounds on the side. I don't know how many times we have been heading home (way later than we should have been) wondering just how pissed the girls were gonna be . So it was perfect that they were here for this expereince. Devin and his wife and my girlfriend and I headed out for a weekend in the woods. The first night we got this picture of a lion and we ran her the next morning to no avail. http://www.hunt101.com/img/396882.JPG Devin and I found some deer hair where the dogs were trailing and we went back later with the girls to find about a day old coues doe kill. So we threw a cam up on it and went to do some shed hunting in the middle of the day. We weren't even hiking for 30 minutes when my girlfriend comes running screaming that she just saw a lion. So of course we rushed back to camp and got the dogs and put them on the track, but betwen the wind and mid-day heat, they couldn't move it. That evening we went to check that kill one more time for the day and the cat had been back and fed on/reburied the deer!!! http://www.hunt101.com/img/396896.JPG http://www.hunt101.com/img/396901.JPG http://www.hunt101.com/img/396890.JPG Needless to say we were all pretty excited about the situation. We had a pretty good feeling that the lion would be back that night to the kill and we'd get a good run at her in the morning, so we thought. As we were driving away heading back to camp, my girl friend says "Oh my gosh, back up, she's laying right there!!!" That cat was laying about 70 yards from the road and about 100 yards from the kill, and was there the whole time!!! We flew back to camp and got the dogs and they were hot on her tail minutes later. The wind was blowing so hard I thought we'd never have a chance with a bunch of young dogs, but she jumped out of 2 trees on us and the dogs never lost her. Not only was it hard for the dogs, we couldn't hear a thing either!! But the girls helped Becker and I firgure out where the dogs went and we closed the deal. http://www.hunt101.com/img/396904.JPG http://www.hunt101.com/img/396905.JPG So the lion that we jumped in the middle of the day was a different cat than the one we ended up shooting that evening (we think). For one it was quite aways from the kill, and for two at about the same time we jumped that lion in the middle of the day, we have pictures of the one lion feeding on the kill? But prolly the most convincing fact that it was a different cat is this. Becker and I headed back in that area the next day to pull the cams and found that the kill was completely eaten and this tom was responsible, so he's next http://www.hunt101.com/img/396906.JPG It was an unforgettable weekend and I want to thank all my friends that have helped me with the dogs to get them to this point, and the girls for puttin up with Devin and my shananagins. Big Coues Mount.....

You mean MY next mount -
Right On!!! I was on a speed goat hunt a few years ago in 19b and had a lady chase off the buck I was after. I was on my belly about 50 yards from this Pronghorn and all the sudden hear this yelling and shaking sound. Needless to say the buck ran off and as I look up I see this lady in pink spandex running at the buck and I with a empty milk jug full of rocks!!! After exchanging a few choice words she told me that it wasn't Pronghorn season and that I was gonna hurt that buck. I informed her that it WAS season, but she was right, I wasn't gonna hurt that buck, I was gonna KILL it!!! Game and Fish got involved but seems they couldn't do a thing about it???

It was absolute blast hangin out with the Epperson boys. Randy has put in many productive years working with dogs and it shows, and Josh is well on the way in his Pop's tracks. I was just fortunate enough to get asked along on this hunt. I would like to thank Randy and Josh for for giving me a chance to work my clueless mutts with some professional K-9's!!! The Epperson boys are both huge assets to hunting in Arizona. I have been very fortunate in my years of hunting to have friends and hunting buddies such as the Josh and Randy, as well as guys like Chris Dunn and Becker. And no matter what success we as hunters experience, it's the relationships and time spent afield with freinds that truly mean the most. ANDY

Well they aren't teaching us anything out of the Bible, that's for sure. And I never said anything about "letting the lions manage our deer populations," of course we need to manage the excess of all the game species, lions included. That is the importance of hunting. All I was making a point at was that some folks look at lions as having no right out there. It's funny how us humans can put one animal so high in our values and disregard the next. And believe me, second to Josh and his dad, I would like to know somone on here that hunts lions as hard as I do. AK -

Native American's didn't kill herd animals? -
LOL- Thats why Dogman said "et al. " which means "and others." As a rookie I got a question? I have been told that some lions keep some spots/stripes on their forearms even as adults? Is this common Dogman? This last cat off one of the cams seemed to have that forearm stripe?

Let me guess, if we didnt control them, "Those evil lions would eat every last deer/elk out there!!!!" Right, they'd just eat themselves straight into extinction. Funny, you'd think that the of thousands of years they were around before we started "CONTROLLING" them they would have done that already????? Just my .02 -
a couple lions

WOW NOW. That's quite the general statement to make about Lions. This male we released sure had some equipment hangin..... -
Man- Why don't you sell that mutt and get a real dog?

You're all a bunch of Lion Haters!!! You may think that killing these few cats will make a difference in the Deer/Elk herds, but unfortunately there is always another cat waiting to fill that territory. Those lions are just as important part of the ecosystem as our "precious" deer and elk are. Just think how many more deer and elk those large perdators kill than we do with our one tag every year. If the preadators were all gone the herbivore herds would be wiped out by disease and competition for sure. -
ROTFLMAO, now that was funny Az!! Marine Goop also works well for any sealing needs on the cams.
-
LOL- Dude it was pretty funny, ask Becker about it.

Hey KWP-- Bet if you would have splurged on the Swaros, Ole Cuatro would be DeadO

Becker had a Python-lock around his camera and a Cowboy got it off with his pocket knife!!!! Luckily Becker can track like an Aborigine and ended up getting his cam back. My advice, make sure the camera has good camo and cross your fingers.
-
Hey Scott- Be sure to call me when you take them on their first pack trip and a lion comes in at night and wipes em all out, LOL. Just kidding, hope that never happens, they have to be easier to handle than mules anyway. LB
