  1. I bought a Wheeler, Level, Level, Level kit. It is two bubble levels, one is for the gun and the other is for the scope. You make sure the gun is level first and second you level the scope. On my Winchester Model 70 30-06 it is not horizontal across the open magazine chamber. The left shelf or edge looks pretty level and I used that? What do you guys think? Thanks Bill

Where in the store is the Jim White chair? I mean is it in tripod adapters or where exacty is it? Thanks Bill
  3. When you are preparing to take an ethical, long range precision shot at undestirbed game what is your checklist? Say for me, I have a tripod rest for my rifle and bullet drop turrets for my ammunition of choice. This is something I just thought up. #1 range the animal, #2 decide if it is in range for an ethical shot, if not get closer, if in range #3 calculate the true horizontal distance with an angle cosine tool, #4 have spotter locate animal with spotting scope, #5 check the wind, #6 adjust the windage and elevation turrents to the corrected range and wind, #7 pick a place to sit down where I can lean against a tree or rock, #8 then sit down, #9 adjust my tripod/bipod legs, #10 adjust the rifle, #11 look back up at where the animal was before I sat down(maybe never take my eye off it?), #12 look through the scope, #13 pick a spot, #14 take a deep breath (or a half breath), #15 take the safety off, #16 squeeze the trigger? What do competition rifle shooters do? Of course there is usually not a lot of time to do a bunch of stuff when shooting at an animal. I am talking about where you have a little bit of time and want to make a precision shot off of a tripod. Thanks Bill
  4. Thanks everyone. Mark would you dry fire the gun in a hunting situation? Wouldn't it spook the animal? I guess if it was far enough away it would not. Thanks Bill
  5. Thanks guys, what is a spotter, someone that is spotting the shot? Bobbyo, yep I agree with you. To me that goes without saying. I generally bowhunt, so I know about getting close. I could have also stated that the setup I am talking about could be for a medium shot or even a close shot, where the game is undisturbed and I have the time to take a precision shot. Of course the closer the game the more chance of being discovered and I would have to move faster. I cannot hit a thing with a rifle off hand. I can shoot really well if I have a steady rest and take my time. I wanted mostly to find out what people do to make themselves as rock steady as possible when shooting in a hunting position. I'd like to learn how people set up to shoot off of a bipod or tripod when hunting. I modified my original post. Thanks all Bill
  6. Great info. I just bought an angle cosine yesterday. Coues n Sheep, the 90% and others you mentioned in your post are the cosines of those angles, approximately. The cosine of the angle is the side adjacent, horiz dist over the hypotenuse, the line of sight distance. So, 90% would mean that the horiz distance is 90% of the line of sight distance. Anyway the wife is calling me for lunch Oh and it does not matter what the distance the cosine of the angle is always side adj over hyp. Man, how nice is it to use something that was burned into my skull for something so fun as hunting. Man I love physics as applied to hunting situtations Bill
  7. I was reviewing the previous topic regarding tripods, but I did not want to hijack it. I see that the the Slik Carbon Fiber Tripod, the Carbon Pro 613 is good and the slik pro mini. The Jim White Head looks great, however it is expensive. The Velbon PH157Q Head looks good, then there is the Outdoorsmans 2-way head, or the Bogen 700RC2 fluid head. I already have a nice heavier tripod, so I am looking for a lighter one to hold my Swarovski 15s or a spotting scope. By the way is there a way to modify a tripod to shoot off in the field? Seems like it would be a good idea. Oh, and can you use the Jim White tripler by itself? Or does it have to be attached to a bino? And will it work on a Leica 8x32? Thanks Bill
  8. Thanks, everyone. Amanda, yes, I would imagine that, that tripler is probably is three power setting? Oh, by the way, does Jim have his own website or are all his products listed here on this site? Bill
