How come you never mentioned this to me before man!!! Casey I think you might be underestimating the Payson gene! Them some angry people up there. The aint sure if they are desert folk or pine folk so they get angered easily and take it out on everybody sorry question never came up to busy fantasizing as soon as i drew my bull tag, cant let no ornry cowgirl get in the way of that hunt. But seriously, there is some tough girls out there, coincidentally in my case there the ones ya wanna mess with..... ya workings might be in order for a reloading deal actually if you two wanna fight over it one of em has a 5a cow tag i think or 4a not sure, never hunted never shot and cant wait to go. -

aww heck i know no one here hardly at all but hey casey, ya probably know the ones with "boy" friends are always more accessible. There always pissed at what they got, no matter how good it is.... P.S. As for tough girls..... dont mis judge, i got some gorgeous cowgirl friends that could whoop just about any guy i know. -
I would have to guess that the small pair is Coues, and the rest muley. But thats just My opinion.

haha you just absolutely have to have something to argue about. I never ever said a 338-378 was to big, heck it would be a heck of an elk whopper! I said it wouldnt be ideal for elephant and rhino yes, there is just no need for a rifle with that range capability on a hunt that is very close quarters. If i had the money, for a long range elk/moose/very large bear the 338-378 would be one of my top choices for your information.... go ahead and read my last post a weee bit closer. Go ahead use your 270, if i wasnt buyin a new gun i would be to

and for the heck of it here is Danner the future shed dog......hopefully.

that was my guess but i wasnt sure how much there was to it. hes got a heck of a nose. ya think sheds ive had sittin around a bit will have lost any scent or should i rough em up a bit? i got a buncha small coues sheds i could round the tips off of. Guess ill have to start some of that out and see how he does.

well you go right ahead and have your opinion, i have mine. and have seen evidence of mine to back it up, as im sure you do for yours. Never said id use a copper bullet, it was a suggestion and i will gladly see how they shoot through the gun. as for head and neck shots, those i will not take, that is my personal choice. i believe things can go wrong and your margin of error decreases significantly with those shots. I love my 270 but hey i need a 300 cuz i want one and simply think its a better elk gun. sure they all do the same thing, for this hunt and this country it just is a better choice. As for the 270/7mm MAG, the 7 is a hair flatter, and more well known for being a longer range gun. If i were hunting in pines or close flat juniper i wouldnt take a 300 or even a 270 for that matter. I would probably be lookin at a 45-70 levergun, why cuz its a good excuse to have one and i wouldnt need longer shots. As for bein "sneaky" i will guarantee ive been as close to live elk as the next guy, maybe not as many as some, but alot. 338-378wby is a big mamajama and im sure it would take a elephant or rhino with the correct shot, but again its not ideal for the way they are hunted, not sniped off from 100+ yards. Thats a close quarters game, and in most of africa you would be below your 375 minimum. The 378 on the other hand if you are a velocity nut and wanna hit em with a train would be ideal.

well now your stating that a copper bullet doesnt deliver enough shock......what happend to a hole in the right place is all that matters? i used the 17 cal to take it to extremes, by saying ANY gun is better than a bow is simply ignorant and wrong. Yes i do know that IN EUROPE a 270 is a true 7mm due to measuring discrepancies, considering i deal in fine european guns i would imagine i should know that. First of all ethics are unique to each person, so bashing them is slightly off base. i have no problem shooting an elk witha 270 but at a longer range, 300 or 350+, i dont believe it will deliver enough shock, just the same as your issue with copper bullets. My statement about a 7mm was refering to a MAGNUM load. not just any 7mm diameter bullet. and hey didnt you say if there was a season for limited weapon broken whiskey bottle you could kill one.....thats a bit less effective than a 25acp. I believe you should probabaly read my original question. i never denounced the 270, in fact i wanted opinions considering all circumstances, not just the animal in mind. i originally was fine with taking it but due to the access to a good custom 300 flatter shooting and overall better LONG RANGE gun and the fact that i have wanted a bull out of this unit for a long time and now have the tag, a gun i am more comfortable with seems to make just a bit more sense. And yes i will shoot a good quailty bullet and know the rifle as well if not better than my 270 by then. Now im confused if its the hole or the shock that matters now cuz ya keep changin it...... an arrow delivers very little shock, yet a copper bullet going fast and zipping through does the same but the hole is there right Bullets need the DELIVERY of kinetic energy, arrows dont, thats why they are different. Ya can get killed gettin hit by a truck but it dont have to put a hole in ya for ya to be dead. Example: If you gut shoot somethin with a bow your gonna be trackin a long time, really need to know what your doing and make another stalk on a animal that is injured and is still nervous about any predator in the area especially you. its not a good circumstance. on the other hand i had a guy on a cow hunt a few years back shooting a 30-06, at 300 yards hit her to far back and dead center in the gut. She had been feeding all day and had a belly full of grass. After gettin to the place about an hour later when she was standing i noticed she had gone 10 ft and layed down. still beded and lookin at me. but could not physically get up or move. That is not a tensed up muscle situation, it was right in the gut mid body. She was in shock. That is why we found her, 180 grains delivering all it had and not comin out the other side. not the rule, but proved my very valid point.

hey both yall with questions on 22n go ahead and PM me any particular questions ya got. ive hunted the unit alot helpin buddys and will be on the early hunt this year also. i cant give ya any "honey holes" but i can give some advise on findin' a place that you can call your own honey hole, what to look for and how to find it. Its much more gratifyin when ya do all your own work, trust me.

by the way CNS, how old is your shorthair? got a one and half year old male here, your dog looks like a heck of a good lookin' pup.
-
ill try em all out. see how the bunnies like em. but i gotta say i am anti-no lead bullets. i cant support a cause thats gonna end up banning lead ammo. Thats a buncha crap. as for the horn thing, im sure casey feels bad enough ive read to many posts with folks rippin on his....experience....im sure his main concern was not lettin that buck suffer right buddy? but again the first few time i was on the floor laughin. i really appreciate everyones input its been helpful, casey even offered to help build up a load for me for the 300. granted im relatively new on here thats awesome. id be glad to help anyone here with any hunts or questions they got that i can answer......or if anyones got a fetish for really high end european guns, thats what i do for a livin'.

i think there is some benefit in them but i doubt the system will ever be perfect. I drew my first year ever with no points when i was 16 or 17 6a archery bull. Have not drawn since then missed a couple draws and drew this year with 5 points. now i did enter for a unit that is not a mainstream unit, also has a low number of elk. My benefit was azgfd changed the hunt from its normal 5 tag only early hunt to 5 tags in oct and 10 in late nov. i used logic and how the average person would still want the early tag along with the fact that last year 133 people entered for those 5 tags. split thats 66.5 people per hunt and i assume most would go for the early "rut" hunt cuz they always had anyways. driving my chances up. Maybe it was luck maybe not but i believe there is a science to drawing...unless you will die with out the coveted 8/9/10/6a/6b/4b/4a tags. Mainstream units are a joke. but some people must like like hunting to seem like they really in a parade.

Thanks, i got some time to figure it all out and i really know ill feel better carring the 300. i dont forsee needing a long shot but if thats what ends up fillin my tag i would like to be ready for it. The gunsmith building my gun is a life long friend and hunting buddy, and i have shot many of what he builds. Its gonna be a heck of a nail driver if his reputation holds, the gun was actually orginaly being built for him. Any one ever lookin for a custom check em out. Grizzly custom outta columbia falls montana, same rifle guys that built at yost-bonitz custom if yall are familiar with the names.

so what if i decided that im gonna put a .17 caliber hole in a elks chest with a 17rem fireball. By your theory that would work, correct? Bullets and arrows work in different ways, sure a hole in the right spot will kill the size matters and shock is the best thing a bullet has going for it. A bullet does not have 1" cutting blades that will hemorage veins and arteries. I take it you read alot of Capstick. Same theory, probably familiar with karomojo bell too. Countless elephants with 257 and similar solid bullets in the right place....in that case the head. The theory works to a degree and paper does not mean anything but bullets are meant to kill with shock, thats why they many times fall right away. and yes i can get close, i dont feel i need to argue that because i know this and thats all that matters. But if you have ever hunted the verde rim and been in that country it is entirely possible to glass up a toad that may be in the thick stuff tommorrow and you have enough time for a shot not time to quietly drop into a canyon and close the range. Preparation is my arguement. if you wanna put my hunting and technique down go right a head, i could careless. i hunt for me, and have nothing to prove to anyone but me. I will spend months scouting this tag and many days shooting whatever i choose to shoot 270/300/bow. Because of that i probably wont run into needing a long shot but we all know stuff happens. No one hunt hardly goes as planned. I will argue the statement, since you brought up opinions, that any gun is better than a bow. Thats an opionion and yes the shooter is all that matters. I respect your opinion, and have alot of faith in the 270 but every hunt can require a diffferent optimal firearm or method of take.

Finally some controversy! Heck ya can kill an elk with a .22. And ya i do bow hunt, actually primarily, but i dont take 70 yard shots at animals, just the same id rather not shoot a 270 at a bull past 300. sure it can do it i have no doubt. As for the 280 recommendation i was speaking more on lines with a 7mm mag or larger due to energy at prolonged distances. Not the 280 rem or ackley. But then again the 280 would probably do just fine also. I know of people that shoot at bulls with 243's, would i recommend it ...no, nor would i hunt with them. It is simlply an ethics question, taking into consideration the possible range i may need for a shot. being it is a late hunt in that country i unfortunately dont think my time will be best spend on this hunt with my bow. I think the 270 is one of the best rounds in existence, and originally felt fine taking it, but going over the country for that hunt and as said before i would rather be prepared for a long shot and not need it than get one and not be able to take it. and heck i need a 300 anyway! So....would you be perfectly comfortable shooting 300-400 yards with your 270 at a bull elk in less than ideal circumstances? P.S. A .270 is currently my only larger caliber rifle for a reason, its dern good. And i always need a good excuse for another gun. So i aint "bashin" your 270

i dunno if i can betray badlands, my 2200 has been so good to me. i think i need a 2800 though also. definately for this hunt, i aint goin back to the truck till a bull is down.....or the ending evening. ill check it out though thanks.

ya i can only hope its in a few of the units im in alot, i know a few of the gameys and would get a good statement of quality to any unknown officer. need to meet a few in 23 and 24b and im good. mike in 36's knows me and i have met randy babb and another 21 guy.
-
oh its gonna be a pack job, i already know that. a fork and some matches will be required. gonna upgrade the badlands too.

Gila's are cool as heck, i average one or two every year. mostly when im bear hunting. There out there, urban encroachment sucks but most the ones i find are in places that will never be developed. But they are some cool little buggers. Problem is i dang near run over most i come across and end up sacrificing the truck! I know ya aint supposed to touch em but id really doubt a gamey is gonna give me crap for pullin one 50 yards off the road so he dont get smashed. if so i will gladly accept it
-
I goofed, its not a 4.5-12x40, that dont exist for leupold. its a 4.5-14x40 with the 30mm tube, long range fine duplex. I really just have never been a fan of the fifty got one on my 223wssm. Ill have to try the tsx, definately 180 though, rifling will for close to 180.
-
yeah now the time extensive finding a good load or gettin my buddy whos building the rifle to and shoot shoot shoot. in between scoutin.........and more scoutin. now i gotta fit a 13b rifle pronghorn hunt in for a girls first tag. gonna be a busy year!

Who makes the best barrel?
coueschaser3 replied to DesertBull's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
My opinion is Jack Daniel's make their own and they are filled with good old Tennessee whiskey and then sold after aging takes place. Not sure what their barrels are going for but you can find it on the web I'm sure. TJ Jack daniels is definately IMO the best. One barrel contains approximately 240 bottles of chacoal mellowed goodness. Since each barrel will have its own distict taste, it is encouraged you visit the distillery to pick and taste test to find your ideal barrel. Each bottle then is capped and displays your personalization and the batch and barrel number. I would definatley go with Jack Daniels. Their barrels run $8,400.00 - $9,600.00. -
eh i just called grizzly custom, looks like im gettin my 300 winny. m700 action, 26"fluted med. shillen barrel... muzz break. leupold 4.5-12x40lr. I figure ill just feel better shootin that over worryin with the 270. thanks for the input yall.
