Ok.. so what happens when those 50 or 75 people kill and report. Is my guided hunt over? So I paid for a service that cannot be fulfilled? J-

I am not trying to be a jerk but this is a pipe dream... People just want to hunt... They are not going to want to go thru this so what is going to happen? People are going to kill and not report.... And what about my outfitter question... If I pay for a hunt and then a unit shuts down prior to me killing I would be livid. J-

So here is a question for you... Say that they figure out that 100 deer can be killed in a certain unit... AND all of those deer are killed before the late rifle seasons start..what happens to those that drew tags?? LAWSUIT in the making... How do they handle people that have booked guided hunts? J-

Talk about expanding the government..... Reading that just made my head spin... There is no way the Dept has the resources to take that on... Personally, I have always been about managing harvest NOT opportunity but I just don't see how the Dept can manage unless they go to a draw. I am sure the Dept is managing for a certain buck to do ratio how do you obtain that unless you put a cap on archery harvests???? Like I said I am happy that Archery is OTC because it saves me if I kill early in NM but I just don't see how they can manage buck to doe ratios...

Sorry what I meant to say was you can hunt Archery OTC and still hunt Rifle Draw but you are only allowed 1 deer a year... In NM, we don't have OTC tags so you need to choose your weapon and season.. you can't hunt with different weapons until you kill... I bet this really contributes to the overall harvest...

What are those checks and balances??? I am serious... Just trying to figure it out... If there are OTC what are they? In NM we are required to submit a harvest report, but even our dept claims that is is not 100% accurate... In the end it only excludes hunters who forget to put in the harvest info... and even then for a small fee they can get back into the draw without reporting in a timely manner. Sorry I probably wasn't clear do you think people should be able to hunt the rifle draws and otc archery in the same year? In NM, you need to choose, you can't hunt both your draw tags and your OTC... I am sure this contributes to the high overall harvest...

The only way you are going to even get close to this is by going to a draw. What is your opinion on going to a strict draw for all archery hunts? Also, what is your opinion on one deer a calender year archery or draw tag?

GBA... We thought the same thing in NM... and we are now on a draw system for just about everything... It is the whole North American Model for Conservation deal. I hope it doesn't go to a draw because I can always count on AZ to hunt deer in the late season if I am fortunate enough to take a early season deer in NM... At the end of the day I think that the department is trying to manage the deer herd and it is difficult without the draw... Just think, every year someone on this website posts people encouraging people not to report harvests... Just to mess with the numbers. I am not sure anybody has the true harvest figures but I am sure that they are abnormally high considering the deer densities. J-

Lord forgive me for giving my input but... 1) Every time I see a nice AZ Archery Coues, I think..."Nice Bait, Buck". In NM we can't bait or use salt or even use scents... We have to hunt them old school 2) Bottom line is that the AZ Dept of Game and Fish is trying to get a handle on the abnormaly high success rate for archery coues deer. If things stay the same and you can continue to bait be prepared for no more OTC Archery tags... That will be their only option... J-

They didn't have night vision... Btw Stanley - you are right, there are conspiracies theories all over the place and I get it, this IS the internet and i am not sure if people will ever be happy... One thing that I don't think has been mentioned is that the only brass that was for was agent brass... If it was a firefight there would be non-agent brass all over the place. I doubt these guys would have had time to pick it all up...

There is a lot more to this story than people realize, it was a perfect storm... I am looking at this thread, and everybody is saying two people. But there were actually 3 people in two different groups. I know it is probably hard to admit that the agents made a serious error but they are only human, rather than trying to come up with these conspiracies theories just pray for those involved. Pray for all involved... The only people that will ever really know are the two men and one woman that were involved, it might all come out but does it really do any good??? We all want someone to blame but in this case it just might have been a fatal mistake. J-

AZlance is spot on... there is a lot of crap that went down that night and a lot of little things that led up to the situation that caused this to happen. Just pray for ALL the families and pray for the shooter because that is a lot to live with. J-

Don't forget we had the Whitewater-Baldy fire in there this year so it might be an entire different game and you might not be able to hunt the entire unit. J-
