Free Range Aoudad Hunt Part II

Thanks for the comments guys. To answer a couple of the questions: it was a smaller ram so after I decided to take it I never even really looked at the horns again but would guess its shy of 27". For that reason I'm just doing a European mount (plus it gives me an excuse to go back). Normally the meat is considered very bad and not worth the time to process it but since this was a young ram we took the time to take the majority of the meat off the mountain. We jerked pretty much everything but the choice cuts. So far we've only tried a few steaks off the back straps and surprisingly they were dang good. A little tough but that's my only complaint, we did however marinate them prior to grilling and I would guess on an older ram like the one John took the meat would be extremely tough. Even though this was a really tough trip I'm already planning my next Aoudad hunt!

    Wilderness Athelete products

I use them and have found a huge difference in the way I feel, way I perform, and my endurance while in the field and at work. The guys are really great to work with and have superior customer service. My wife has started taking some as well and has been happy with the results. I have been very happy with everything I've tried from them so far.

Daughter had great first year of hunting,,,

That is very cool, congratulations on her great year! Nothing better than hunting with your kids. I am fortunate enough to have a daughter to share in her hunts with and I wouldn't trade it for the world, great job dad!
  14. I posted this in the Bighorn Sheep section as well but thought I would post it here too. On October 18, 2010 my uncle signed a contract with Todd Rice of Sonoran Outfitters to hunt Desert Bighorn Sheep in Sonora, Mexico. On November 18th he arrived in Kino Bay, Sonora for his hunt. The next day he began hunting and on November 24, 2010 he shot a nice 165” ram with dark horns that were broomed off. The ram was aged at 10 to 10 ½ years old. (Pictures of my uncle and his Ram are on Todd’s website) November 25, 2010 my uncle returned home with Todd promising to deliver his Ram within 2 or 3 weeks, which he never did. After 10 months of Todd Rice refusing to even communicate with my uncle he decided to file suit in Coconino Superior Court. He had his first Court Arbitration Hearing in Flagstaff on September 12, 2012 with Court Appointed Judge John Trebon. On October 12th Todd offered to settle with him by providing the horns and cape into his possession. Several more months went by with Todd stalling and refusing to deliver my uncle’s trophy. As it would turn out, Todd Rice defaulted on the settlement because he never purchased a tag for the Ram prior to or after the hunt. Fast forward to April 9, 2013, in front of Judge John Trebon, Todd offered a new settlement. This offer was another Desert Sheep Hunt in Sonora. My uncle was to arrive on February 2, 2014 and start hunting the next day. If Todd failed to follow through a judgment would be awarded to my uncle for the cost of the original hunt plus attorney's fees and expenses. On December 3, 2013 my uncle had not heard anything from Sonoran Outfitters about his upcoming Sheep Hunt so he sent Todd an e-mail. He explained that he needed to know the details of the hunt so he could purchase a plane ticket and make plans for the upcoming hunt. Todd responded right away saying he would get back to him in a couple of days with all of the details. As of January 10, 2014 my uncle had not heard from him so he sent him another e-mail requesting the details of the hunt. He never got a response. He then began trying to reach him by phone but Todd never answered or returned any calls. So February 3rd came and passed without a single word from Sonoran Outfitters. On the 4th of February my uncle’s attorney filed a Motion of Default against Todd Rice and Sonoran Outfitters in Coconino Superior Court requesting that a Judgment against Todd Rice and Sonoran Outfitters be completed. Hopefully my uncle will be able to recover all of the money he has paid out to Todd along with all of the other fees and expenses, so that someday he can go on another Desert Sheep Hunt with a reputable outfitter and get his trophy he has dreamed about. I’m spreading my uncle’s story as we don't want other hunters to fall victim to Todd Rice and Sonoran Outfitters.

    Beware of Sonoran Outfitters!

Still amazes me that Todd is able to get clients after all of the people he has hosed. Goes to show how important it is to get references and do your homework before spending your hard earned money.

    Turkey Taxidermist?

I've been doing some looking around for a good turkey taxidermist and figured I'd ask for everyone's opinions. If you have any recommendations and pictures of their work I'd appreciate it. I have found a few that do really good work but they are all out of state and would like to keep it local if possible, if out of state is the best then I'm not opposed to shipping either though. Thanks in advance!
  17. For the first time I can remember I had a tag in my pocket for a hunt and was sitting at work on the opener. My cousin John and I had drawn late tags and due to work and other commitments we weren't able to get out until the third day. We weren't real worried as we had some great bucks on the hit list, camp was set, and we would be joined by Chef as well as my father. I put together this video that sums it up but to recap it was a great hunt that was exactly what December hunting should be. We took a couple of bucks that we have watched for several years, we enjoyed great food, good stories, and most of all had fun. I will say I did not get either of the bucks that I had set my sights on and hopefully I will be able to put an arrow in one of them next year.

    Outdoorsmans pack

Pretty much everything that has been said is spot on from my experience. I purchased my pack when they first came out years ago and have had no issues with the noise but have heard of some of the newer ones having this problem. I also have heard that a shot of Teflon dry lubricant spray has taken care of the noise. The only downside that I have found with my pack is that it is heavy empty. That being said it handles the weight better than any pack I have ever put on. I have carried some serious heavy loads for 10+ miles and never had an issue. I normally don't haul my rifle in the pack as I've found it just as easy and comfortable to hang the sling over the top post of the frame which still enables me to keep both hands free without fear of the rifle slipping. I have hauled my rifle in the pack as designed but just don't prefer to use it that way. The other benefit that I love is how easy it is to take the pack apart from the frame which I do every year and utilize the frame for shed hunts and also have used it for just a pack frame before as well. When I'm not hauling my spotter, big tripod, stool, and everything else I use an Eberlestock X2 to cut the weight but I've found this to be not very often.

    When it all comes together........

Congratulations on a gorgeous buck! I love the way he carries his mass throughout his frame. That also looks like one heck of a rock pile he was in. Great write up, really enjoyed it!
