Nice!

Well.....no luck. Partly due to my fault, basically, the lack of scouting. Turns out I never made it far enough up the road to get into the area with a lot more deer. (so I am told). only went out two days. We saw one doe with two fawns. some tracks. some poop. a dead cow. a dead goat. No bucks. I did find these cool grasshoppers: Grashopper soup anyone?

Went out Saturday. No real luck. Glassed up on a waterhole for a couple of hours and had a doe and two fawn walk 20 feet from us. Will try to go back out Tuesday. That is a rough area, very rugged and dry and has very little deer sign. Had fun getting out with my dad. This is where we had our only encounter.

Got called to work on opening day oh well. gonna head out early tomorrow moring with my day. it will be a short hunt. have to work monday. good luck everyone.

+1 for not gutting the deer. I first used this method about 25 years ago backpacking a bow hunt for desert mulies in the Davis mountains. I was young back then, and stuck a buck way back in and up a ways. After the initial jubilation was over, I realized I had a 240 pound animal on the ground. I had read something I think written by Dwight Schew or someone. I spilt his hide right down the spine and boned the meat from the top down. it still took me 2 trips to get him out, but gut and quartered it would have taken 4 trips I think. Also the neck roast in the crock pot is a delicassy. I will add that on a rutting buck, I will pour off the broth and replace w/ beef broth, it makes it not so gamey so the wife and kids will eat it too. Word on the gutless method. I throw up when I try to do gut right away. mostly due to the rush, but still, it's stinky. funny thing is, i work in surgery, but the gutting thing just kinds of overwhelmes me sometimes. i'll try the pillow case thing. sound like a good idea. thanks for the great input!

I'll be scouting the Winchesters next Saturday. Excited to hunt the unit for the first time.

I hunt the other side off of Reddington Pass. I pulled out a huge 4x4 a couple of years back near Bellota ranch. You'll have to glass a lot in the morning and evening but I've had luck hunting the draws and thickets in the evenings.

Hi, Looking for a 3D camo (leafy) top with hood if possible. Not really interested in bottoms, but will buy both if price is decent. Looking for more of a desert scheme, if they are out there. Just testing the waters before I drop cash at Sportsman's. Thanks guys, Benn
