I saw a photo in the bow hunting forum of horses packing deer out (my cousins actually). I thought it was a cool photo and I found one of my own, though not as cool. I dont know how many hunters use horses but they make for great photos. Any others out there? With his permission, 1st is his photo then mine. I gotta quit usin disposable cameras.

They were most likely lookouts for their dope load. Thats what I figured also, but dressed in black in daylight? I can see wearing black at night, but I dont know. Seems pretty wierd to me. More than likely you are right and they were lookouts.

Any opinions on the .243? Thats what I use and Ive never had to take a second shot. -
Alright, I have a final question: After the final coat of Tru Oil was applied I lightly sanded it with a fine steel wool. Am I done, or is there some kinda conditioner that needs to be applied? I will post a pic when I'm done. Ive been a little busy and sore from a "little" run i just did. Wish I had a before pic to compare. Don't expect much though, I am an amateur. Thanks again.

I dont know if this is a sore subject with anyone, but the Minute Man Project seemed to slow the traffic down while they were in town. Point being, there are things that can be done. Question is, who and when?

I see nothin torturing that chick. I'm a little tortured by the huge banner covering the chick. Joking.

It really is too bad that these illegal smugglers ruined your hunt. At least on this occasion they left without any trouble, it could have turned out differently. You did the right thing. This is a problem that will countinue to plague future hunts and hunters. I for one am tired of it, we should be able to hunt any area without fear for our life. Smugglers have and will shoot people if they feel its nessecary. While hiking in the huachuca mnts, I have had warning shots fired at me, at least I hope they were warning shots, to ward me away from their dope. Something drastic and immediate needs to be done.

I am about done with the stock, maybee another coat or two. Its turning out pretty good with the tue oil, thanks for the advice. The barrel was rusted and I decided to reblue it. With some google searches and hard scrubbin it turned out great, looks almost new. I can't wait to put it all back together again. Again, I appreciate all the advice that was given.

DCM: You gotta great set up and awesome pics. Congrats on your success. I have the opportunity (through my father) to do a back country hunt with horses but I havent taken advantage of it yet. My father hunts with horses and sometimes does back country hunts. He invites me but I have a hard time hunting an area I havent scouted or know very well. Plus I enjoy hiking by foot. Ive already failed the January archery hunt so if the 08 rifle season doesn’t pan out, I plan to do an archery trip with him in December. I know that he has great pics of some of his hunts and i will try to get him to post some. COOSEFAN: Very impressive work on your pic on the elk, thats some funny stuff right there. Any others with pics to share?

They owe him $50M. That's a lot of Jerseys. The only thing I do not like is I think they could have got a lot more for Marion than a 36 year old 335 lbs man with the $50M contract. I agree 110% DesertBull. Although its done now and all we can do is hope for the best. It could/might work out.

I cant answer for my cousin, cause I wasnt there. It does appear that he may have packed the bucks out with the hide on and I havent asked him about it. As for my situation we had a base camp from which we used the horses to get to our glassing areas. On this particular occasion we were not very far from camp. The bucks were together, so they were both dropped within minutes of each other. Both bucks were immediately gutted. We then used the horse to pack the bucks back to camp where we skinned them. My hunt was not in a remote area and the venison was awesome.

There is no way Shaq will be able to keep up with the Suns style of play. I'll bet that he wont see much court time against any team but the Spurs. Maybe he can help stop Duncan. If so, then maybe its a good move on the Suns part. We will see. Any way it's pretty shocking, didnt see that comin. I will miss Marion though.

It is an amazing bull... alive. Any hunter that would take pride in hunting and shooting a Farm Raised bull is a Putts.... There is NO pride in that... just a kill. No different than going on a Buffalo hunt in NM for meat (On a Pen Raised Ranch) and shooting one that is big and being proud of your accomplishment. The only thing that guy accomplished IMO is putting some REALLY high $$$ steaks on his table! Sorry.... I had to say it. High Fence is High Fence.... That makes it nothing more that a meat hunt. I am simply stating that it is an amazing bull. Im not giving props to the "hunter" who bought some really expensive meat. SIMPLY AMAZING BULL!!!!

Thanks for all the positive comments. I had a great time on this hunt. My group bagged 3 bucks with six tags, so it was a very successful hunt. Although, we didn't see any really mature bucks. In fact, my buck was the largest we saw. We have been hunting this spot for about the last 4 yrs and I think that it may be time to scout out some new areas. On another note, Ive tried my hand at bow hunting this January. I did have a close call with a 100 class buck, but I have a ton of respect for those that get it done with a bow. Fun stuff but very frustrating. Those bucks were winding me left and right.

Regardless of how it was harvested, ethical/unethical, fenced in/tied to a tree, that is truly an amazing bull.

About 5 years ago, while glassing for coues in the Little Dragoons in unit 32 , my brother swears that he spotted from a distance what appeared to be a large black colored cat. He though that it was a jaguar, but I figured he was full of it.

Alrighty then, tru oil it is. I really appreciate the info everyone has given. I am really enjoying this project. Depending on how it turns out I might even try the 30-06. Thanks again for all the input.

I had the October hunt. He looked quite a-bit bigger through the glass, though I wasnt disappointed when I found him. Most all my field pictures are terrible. Camera was el-cheapo disposable.
-
I am probably going to finish the stock with Tru oil but I have two more questions: Would a filler help to darken and enhance the grain? Does any one know if an ammonia fume process would work?
-
Congratulations, you really earned it. Now the swarm can migrate else where. Awesome buck!!
-
Trust me, Im not beating myself up. Its by far the biggest coues Ive shot, and I had a great time. Like I said earlier, I was only going for a bigger than last year buck. So mission accomplished.

I'll give the tru oil a shot. Ive just seen stocks with super dark grain and didnt know if there was a stain or something to enhance the grain without darkening the natural color of the stock too much.. Thanks for the advice.
