So when do they start dropping??(antlers)

A couple years ago Rob (Basser15) found a matching set and they still had velvet on them. It was kind of weird though because both have been chewed of up passed the G2's. Ill see if he can post a pic of them. Jay WOODSAZ, Found a fresh Muley lion kill in september that was only days old and still had leftovers on it, so he was probly watching me from a distance. Anywho the Lion had eaten the entire Velvet antlers of the buck, except for the five inch bases . Wondering what ate the set your talking of . Were the horns hard or soft under velvet? Were the bases or the main b's eaten off up to the g-2's?? let us know if you can't post the pic, ver interestin . The topic at hand,When do They shed? In the spring, elementry my dear watson So many variables and factors......this question will never die. Extreme cases of Jan-June are not unheard of.......March and April are prime time... Feb and May are so-so. But they generally don't move too much once they hit the dirt, there for they can be found all 365 days a year, untill if left undisturbed they will disentigrate and or become viagra for the critters ....... Squirrels are the best horn hunters and they usually find umm before anyone else..I once fought a Treerat Beginning the massacre of a horn still bloody from the drop....He beat me too it but luckily I was able to save it after a short scuffle. HeadHunter are you after your bucks sheds?????!!! They're allready on the ground bro, I could get a hikeing permit and help u look maybe?

    My dads Pig from 2-12-10

    Awesome!!
  10. Bout 15 years ago when my voice was changeing every second, I called in two muley does' and a coyote at the same time.... I guess the god awfull sounds I was makeing sounded like a fawn in distress.. Got on a big bull one time and rattled some deer horns at him, he came in close ( 10 yds) to investigate, this was in last week of nov. Rattled in a stomper Coues buck last OCTOBER , I mouth bleated to stop him for the shot, and missed... The only other calls that day was curseing while looking for blood and calling my Muzzy a one pump chump- myself an idiot for not fouling the barrell!! Haven't called much so these are my strangest calling highlights. But, when busting into Deer while hikeing, they usually get some " BAAHH or CM' Baaack" outa me, seems to strike their interest instead of fear, works often but not allways. Calling of sorts I reckon. Lmao @ " 5'11 swedish blonde"

    Does Size Matter?

Jim, we look forward too see the results from your hundreds of hoof measurements in correlation to their antler size for those deer measured. My common sense says yes, generaly larger hooves- particularly those bigger than those of does' of said specie will belong to the biggest racked bucks or ( mature bucks ). And I'm betting the small hooves will belong to the smaller racked bucks ( young),I'll say that theory holds true for WT and MD. Just here say though without them graphs. BTW Thanks for all you do Jim. Also It would be cool to know how much larger Buck tracks are than does' too, age being the same. I for one pay serious attention to tracks so any info you provide is great! All though First genetics then age / nutrition are the keys to antler size. I'm sure your studies will reflect the oldest and biggest bodied and or racked bucks will lay down the biggest tracks cause they sport the biggest hooves also. How many years does it take for a deer to reach full hoove size?, do they stop growing longways but getter broader with more years? I'd guess BIG tracks usually were made by BIG bucks sporting big bodies and or racks, and I'll bet a tag the biggest tracks in the area were probly made by the biggest buck in the area, I dunno- just makes sense to me. But allot of variables like the genetics/terrain/nutrition/travel patterns are keys in hoove size too besides age/sex right? But then sometimes little/ young bucks with huge racks/ smaller tracks/ Old - big bodied bucks with smaller racks and large tracks. UUGGHHH, so many variables. Great topic guys! Jim, of the subject somewhat here but while were talking data, please tell whoever oversees the elk/ant. success rates data they need to publish them in the regs along side the draw rates. Just like the Deer stats. Otherwise why are people filling out the harvest reports? The people would like to know the results of hunts just like G&F does. Or maybe bring this up to your fellow G&F personel. I've asked many hunters why they arent in the regs and the reply is " yeah- how come they're not published too?" , Didn't they used to be? Again thanks for your time Jim putting all us Un-edumacated folks in the know. I Like the idea of a study of this on CW.com next season Amanda, very interesting! I have hooves from different bucks my family and I have taken, I'll measure and get them posted soon. Do they shrink in the freezer or outdoors? Measure to closest 1/8? Much to be learned on threads like this, I am sponge. No , I don't like Sponge Bob square pants!

CHECK OUT THIS BUCK 164IN COUES

idk about that one... watched my dad shoot 5 times at one this past october and it never ran.... it was funny to watch Watched Dad do the same thing on a stomper Mulie in NM last nov...He still got away One well placed shot is allways nice but just isn't usually the case.... I'd guess I usually here an average of 2/3 shots per hunter/animal while out there on rifle hunts. Some are only one shot... Then again I've heard hunters go through 2 magazines on a critter with a pause of reloading.. Funny you only ever here 1 ka-boom from a ML... . With a rifle,I like to think if you still have ammo and the game is still alive then you keep shooting...I think i want to get a semi auto just to re-aquire your target easier for bullet flingin scenarios like that, it will likely happen to all of us at one time or another.. It's crazy enough with a bolt action, spotter and buck fever.... I think it will help? But I love the one shot challenge, limited range and smoke of a muzzy...just for kicks... They say you can speed reload and probly get a second shot, I've yet to see it.. Huge congrats to the guy in the video getting it done, what a Phenominal buck!!! The victory "shot" and the commentary are good too ..I can't imagine haveing a buck and hunt like that on video, frigin cool !! Theres no way in heck that guide would be hauling that rack/buck for me though !! Otherwise it's an awesome hunt video and world class buck
