    Rattlesnake Avoidance Training for Dogs

I took my two dogs for snake training yesterday. My two year old GSP female had never been done and my Vizsla male was done when he was a year old-he'll be six this year so I gave him a refresher to see if he remembered what they were-he did. The guy I went to this time was in New River-he's on the Web at Viper Voidance-been snake proofing dogs for nine years. I thought he did a good job. Also you can't go wrong with Bill Gibbons at magma bird dog training. There is a considerably difference in price. If you want to check out the guy at Viper voidance you can look up his website or give him a call. 480-215-1776. His name is Jim.

    Tan colored chevy 4x4

Saw a tan colored(I think) chevy 4x4 pickup going east on the sixty this morning before daylight-had a cwt sticker in the backwindow. You turned off by the jack in the box. I was in a silver and black jeep with a cwt sticker on the spare tire cover. Who was it?

    Tan colored chevy 4x4

I was on my way to Roosevelt to look for some Quail with my dogs-found more pig hunters and deer hunters than Quail-but what a great day just to be outside. Good luck on the Javies.

OPENING PIG HUNT / pics added Jan 5

Good luck tomorrow Tom. Take time to drink some water or pack a little gatorade. If you get down and can't move, them pigs might take some revenge on you for all their relatives you've done in over the years.
  13. Got to get out with three of my best friends today for a day of quail hunting-Delbert, my Vizsla-Reba my GSP pup-and TJhunt2-not exactlly sure what bred he is. TJ and I have spent a lot of time in camp together over the years in pursuit of all kinds of feathered and furred critters. Today was the first hunt for Delbert and Reba together. Delbert is my five year old Vizsla whom I've had since he was a puppy-he was my first pointing bird dog-and Reba is my 17 month old GSP-this is her first hunting season, and today was the first time I have got to hunt them together. We all got an early start this morning and arrived at the area we wanted to hunt before it was light enough to see. TJ and I sat in the jeep drinking coffee and listening to the dogs whine in protest of why they had to wait to go hunting. It's fun to watch the dogs at home when you're getting the bird hunting stuff out the night before a hunt-like little kids on Christmas eve. TJ's lab puppy Lexie was really excited when I got to TJ's house to pick him up this morning and she was sure it was a mistake when we didn't take her with us-Tom's wife Peg said she had to get out of bed and let Lexie outside so she could see that we had actually left her before she would quit whining and go back to sleep. Great thing about dogs-they don't hold a grudge-Lexie was glad to see us when we got home from our days hunt. We parked the jeep by a cattle water trough and started hiking up a canyon when daylight came. Delbert and Reba did their usual 30 minute run as fast as you can in all directions warm up. TJ and I walked up the canyon a half mile or so and we hadn't seen or heard any birds so decided we should turn our search uphill and climbed out of the canyon and took off up a promising looking ridge. When we were about halfway up to the top of the ridge, we saw a couple of quail fly near the top of the ridge. It looked like they landed on the top of the ridge. We hiked on up and the dogs started acting pretty birdy as we neared the top. One bird wild flushed out in front of TJ and was out of range before he could get a shot off. A little farther on I saw reba acting birdy and got a point that lasted about a half second before a Gambels quail came whirring out of a bush in front of me- a lucky shot and a nice retrieve by Delbert and we had our first quail of the day in the bag. We hunted back down hill for aways and I shot another bird that Delbert put up out in front of me-we followed the ridge line down aways and I saw the covey fly from the ridge we were on across a canyon and land on the other side. We were nearly to the bottom of the canyon fixing to cross over when a stragler flew up in front of TJ- I didn't know you could knock that many feathers off a quail with one shot-seemed like they floated in the air for ten minutes. I marked where the bird fell on the other side of the canyon-he sure as heck was dead-full choke 20 guage at about 10 yards will do the trick. TJ went across the canyon and I directed him to where the bird fell. He found it and called Reba over to let her find it-she did and picked it up-problem was she figured it was her's and she didn't want to give it to TJ. After some sweet talking TJ had the bird in his bag. We followed the covey back to the top of the ridge and back to the bottom. Got a couple more points from the dogs but no more shooting-the birds would get up and fly so close to the ground that we were afraid to shoot because they were to close to our dogs. We hunted back to the jeep and took a break. Rested a little watered the dogs and made another pretty good round but didn't find anymore birds-Delbert did find a black cow and made a really pretty point on her-he always points cows-go figure. By the time we hunted back to the jeep again I was tired, Delbert and Reba were tired and so was TJ. We all figured it was time to call it a day. Not many birds today but got to see some pretty good dog work from my two mutts, see some new country and spend some time with friends-all and all a really good day.
  14. Got to take my new pup Reba out for the second time on wild quail on Sunday. She has had quite a bit of work done on pigeons as a training aid, and is just getting started on wild birds. She is really doing well and I am real pleased with her. Next outing I am going to hunt her with my Vizsla, Delbert and see how they do hunting together. They are great buddies at home and I hope they will compliment each other when it comes to hunting. Too bad bird season is so short-I really enjoy my dogs. By the time it's cool enough for the dogs to run(and the snakes to go in the hole) we only get a couple of months it seems. I'm thinking of joining the Arizona Pointing dog club so I can work my dogs year round.

    Dove Hunting

TJ, you and lexie will have a long and happy hunting career together if she doesn't die from eating Peg's Christmas ornaments. She is really coming along nice and I'm glad you are getting her out as much as you can. She'll be your buddy for life and will never hold it against you when you drink too much beer.

    New Dog

German shorthairs are great versatile dogs-even come with web feet and love the water. As far as them tending to wander off, no more so than any other hunting breed-turn them loose and they want to go hunt. All breeds take some training to learn that they are hunting with you and not you trying to hunt with(find) them.
  17. Yuma has a long distance range-out to 1500 yards. Local gun clubs have it occupied a lot on weekends.

    Guess the Lion weight!

    nice lion-114 lbs.
  20. I was out Oct.1 on the north side of Roosevelt lake-Got a few birds and quit early-really hot. I saw good numbers of birds but they seemed really spooky for opening morning. Lots of birds getting up out of range or right on the edge of gun range-the ones you shoot at when you know they are too far and then shoot again because your gun holds more than one shell. Think I will go again next week and hope for cooler weather-would like to take my dog but just to hot. Didn't see any snakes and only talked with one hunter who did see any. Jackshoe

    Dove Recipe

I can confirm that the recipe is a good one. About the time we finished eating TJ said we should have taken a picture of the finished product-I told him we still could-we had a plate full of dove bones and a waste can full of empty adult beverage containers. Don't think thats what he had in mind. Good job on the doves Mr. Joiner! Jackshoe

    flying ants

If you are ever around a trout stream or a lake with trout when this ant hatch occurs, you're in for some fun if you are a fly fisherman. I've had this happen to me on White river and the Little Colorado River below the Greer Lakes. You could see every trout in the stream coming to the surface and gorging on the ants. They must taste good because the trout stuff on them and will continue to eat a fly that looks like a flying ant for several days after it's over with.

    Montana Summer Adventures

What a great way to spend a summer. Really great pictures-thanks for sharing. I will be in Montana in a couple of weeks-Some friends and I are going to do a week long pack trip into the Bob Marshall Wilderness area and catch some Westslope cutts on the fly-problem is that I then have to come back and go back to work in my office-I like your office a lot better.
