What's the difference between the feds not allowing the public access and the private ranch that it was before the feds bought it with our money not allowing public access? Seems to be the same result to me.

Why is the Caldera closed to the public?

nice looking dog-I have a Vizsla named Delbert. These dogs are so smart I think you could get them to do about anything if they understand what you want. nice looking shed. Shed hunting is a lot of fun and helps you learn new areas-but I'd much rather be looking for a quail with my dog-wouldn't you?

Wolf country: Ranchers fighting comeback of a predator
jackshoe replied to mxslaugh's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
I saw a wolf between Big Lake and the West Fork of Black River a few years ago-It had a collar on and was following a bunch of hereford cows and calves (this was before they quit grazing this area). During the same time frame I heard wolves howl at night while camping with a group at the corrals on f.r. 116. The anti's don't think that there is any reason to ever remove a wolf once they are turned loose-the truth is many of them could not make the adjustment from being fed road kills on a daily basis to fending for themselves in the wild. They also came to associate food with people(because they were fed by people) That's a dangerous combination and usually ends up with a dead wolf. -
Wolf country: Ranchers fighting comeback of a predator

To bad that nuts like Linda Valdez get to express there ridiculous and Wrong opnions in a public newspaper and actually get paid to misinform the public. Every group that she refers to in her aritcle is admitedly very anti rancher. What most people don't realize is that many of these same groups are not only anti rancher, anti hunter, anti any kind of use of public lands- they are also of the opinion that these lands that Miss Valdez spouts about belonging to everyone-should be off limits to most of the public. The vision of the Rewilding Institute that she refers to in her article would have great uninteruppted animal migration corridors through out North and South America as well as other continents that would be strictly enforced(off limits) to most of the public. They believe that having large numbers of free roaming large predators on the planet is the only way to save the planet and bring the environment back into balance. What they fail to realize is that man is the top predator on the planet. I believe they are a bunch of nuts who don't represent what most of the population would like to see done with public lands. I think Miss Valdez and people who think like her don't really think at all but are easily decieved. Next will be reintoduction of grizzly bears to their original range-happy camping guys. The anti's should have to live on pond scum and wolf turds. My 2 cents worth. Ted Bounds -

Way to go Charlie- Birds are hard to get this year-With all the opportune precipitation we have been getting we should have a good hatch and hopefully more birds next year. jackshoe

My snake guards look just like the ones in your picture. I have a friend who started using them in the flats in Texas while fishing for redfish, and he put me on to the idea-they work- have been hit by stingrays with no penetration. The water doesn't hurt them-just hang them up and air dry. My friend keeps his stored on his boat in Texas. Jackshoe

The ones I use are similar to catchers shinguards but go all the way around your leg and cover the top of your foot-they double for protection from stingrays when fishing sandy flats in the ocean. I have used boots also and find that the snake guards are not as hot as the boots and only take a few seconds to put on or take off. Jackshoe.

nice looking bird TJ- Looks familar. jackshoe

What's a kapowie bird? TJ A kapowie bird is a bird that flies at an ever increasing speed in and ever decreasing circle until KAPOWIE- he flies up his own rear
-
I saw a mark like that on a guy once that was attacked by a kapowie bird, tj. i didn't realize water monsters left the same mark.
-
I think most of the bird dog pups are curios about snakes-my dog Delbert had the same reaction as Sheila the first time he smelled a snake-wanted to run over and see what made this interesting smell by snuffling it-like they do everything that smells like something they aren't familar with-be careful with your pup. I didn't snake train my dog until he was about eight months old-don't think it would be a good thing on a small puppy.

I have a Vizsla and I have had him snake trained and also given him the vaccine since he was a puppy and started hunting. I have heard of people saying their dogs had reactions to the vaccine, but I know of four hunting friends and my dog that have had the vaccine with no ill effects. the guy who recommended the vaccine to me had search and rescue dogs and he wasn't selling the vaccine- he had seen three search dogs bitten that had the vaccine - all had very minor swelling and sickness from the snake bite. I think it's worth the risk- I would hate to lose my pardner!! Jackshoe

I don't think you will be disappointed. I bought the same bow in November and sure like shooting mine. I am set up at 31" draw length and am shooting axis 340 arrows-9.5 gpi- with 100 grain heads @ draw weight of 65 lbs-through the chronograph at archery headquarters it's 275fps. Good luck and enjoy! jackshoe

Thanks for all the good info. I know a couple of people who have been bitten by diamondbacks and neither of them had much tissue damage. Both got treatment within an hour or so of the bite and were fortunate not to get a big jolt of venom I guess. One guy was reaching into the cage on a generator to check the oil and the snake bit him. He says it never rattled and he thinks it was just trapped with no place to move to when he put his hand in the cage. When he realized what had happened he was going to kill the snake before seeking medical help. He went to pick up a rock and saw how much his hand had swollen in a minute or so and decided to forget about the snake and get headed for town-probably a wise move.

I didn't know that there were no timber rattlers in Arizona. What are the black rattlesnakes that we see in the mountains? When I lived in the seirra anchas north of roosevelt lake, we saw lots of these black rattlesnakes-they were shorter and thicker than diamondbacks, and all the old timers called them timber rattlers.

Great Story and congrats on the Pigs! It's great to see families hunting and spending time in the outdoors together.

Sure sounds like target practice to me. This also makes you wonder how much hydrazine has fallen to earth that no one said anything about. Sorry to be so cynical about the good faith and honest intensions that our government professes, but I can't think of one reason not to be cynical.

WELCOME JACKSHOE (newbie)

Thanks for the welcome_hope I have something worthwhile to say or share once in awhile. Ted -
I did a horseback pack trip with an outfitter into the Teton - Bridger wilderness area in 2004. This is adjacent to the Park. We fished the head waters of the Yellowstone River and the Throughfare River. The outfitter is a third generation guy in this area, and he takes Elk hunts into the wilderness area. We camped on the Yellowstone river and rode all over the Yellowstone meadow and surrounding area for a week. Yellowstone meadow is really more swamp than meadow, and an ideal place for moose to summer. We saw one moose in the week that we were there. The outfitter said before the wolves that it would have been typical to see maybe 20 moose in the area we covered. He also said the impact on the elk numbers is very noticeable. Don't know about the Buffalo herd. Wolves require lots of country to live in-they have spred outside the Park already and it will be interesting to see where they eventually show up at. I have a rancher friend who lives in Evanston, Wyoming( southwest corner of Wyoming, about 70 miles from salt lake city, Utah) There have been confirmed livestock kills by wolves around Evanston since wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone Park.
