    Draw Odds Calculator

I asked about a couple units earlier in the thread. I ended up putting in for 6a archery with 7 bonus points and got drawn due to the bonus point pass I think.

    Desert Muley rut

I was helping a friend chase around Muleys the past 3 days and the bucks were all with does. This is the main buck we were after.
  7. I drew an October whitetail tag with my dad this year and spent many nights dreaming of a big buck leading up to the hunt. I spent a lot of time in the area during the archery season and a quite a few days prior to the hunt in search of a nice deer. Well, I didn't get the one in my dreams but I'm very happy with my second Coues. I had high hopes of shooting a 100"+ buck this year but after five days of hunting hard, my standards quickly lowered. On the fifth morning, my dad and I glassed up my buck from well over 1,000 yards and watched until he disappeared to the northside of the hill. We glassed some more and eventually decided to make our way over to try and relocate the buck and get a better look at him. As soon as we got into position to glass the northside of the hill where he disappeared, I saw movement and quickly realized it was him raking a tree. He was with a smaller fork and I watched them for a while from 700 yards deciding whether or not to make a move on the 3x3. I thought he would be bigger than my first coues so at that point he was good enough for me. I snuck down the hillside trying to get within range while my dad stayed back and watched. I got to 400 yards and waited until he presented a shot. As I was waiting I dialed in the yardage on my turret and set up my phone to record through my binoculars. He finally stepped out broadside, I shot, and missed. He took off but stayed in the area so I knew if I was patient I might get another shot. I watched the shot on my phone and noticed it was well to the right. My patience payed off and he presented another broadside shot. I fired again and it produced another miss to the right. I decided it wasn't me at this point so I looked at my shooter app and dialed my scope 2.5 MOA to the left. The buck stopped for another shot and this time I hit him. I was unable to get the last shot on video because at that point I was more focused on just getting the deer down. I quickly made my way over to where I had seen him go down. My shot was a little low unfortunately, so one more shot was necessary to finish him off, but he was finally done. It was starting to get dark as I sat there admiring my deer while waiting for my dad. We took a few pictures and quartered him out as quickly as possible. It was a long and tough hike out in the dark but we finally made it back to the truck at about 9:30pm. I dropped the meat off with John at WGP II the next day and boiled the skull to make a European mount. I roughly scored him at about 83". Not the 100" I was looking for to begin with but he's a beautiful buck and I'm very happy. I couldn't have done it without my dad and I wouldn't want anyone else there with me. I also owe many thanks to my friend Alex for showing me some good areas and helping whenever he had the chance. Here's a video I put together pretty quickly on my Iphone. The video clips were all taken with my Iphone through my binoculars. <iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.c...bed/4joP26Es3VU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

    My 2nd chance buck

Nice buck! I think I was in the same area on Saturday and Thursday but parked at the gate and hiked northwest with no luck. Looks like I should've drove down the road further.

Sorry about your stuff. Good thing for insurance. That almost happened to me one time but luckily the thugs didn't know how to break into my truck. I wake up a little earlier in the morning to pack my truck now.

    Coues Newbie - Unit 32

I can try to find out for you guys, I know the rancher. If you could that'd be appreciated. I've hunted that area the past few years and was gonna use it as a backup spot this year.

    Coues Newbie - Unit 32

I would've said the YLE Ranch road but I was down there this afternoon and not sure if they're still allowing access. The gate was unlocked but the bypass around the ranch house was pretty non existent with rocks and pieces of trees blocking the road. Does anyone know if he doesn't want people driving through anymore?

    Coues shed and lion kill

I thought I'd share a couple finds. The first one I believe is from a lion kill. I glassed it up about a month ago while scouting. I didn't find any teeth marks on the remains but about two years ago I saw a lion in the same spot I found this dead coues. This is a shed my little cousin picked up while elk hunting a couple years ago. I was with him at the time but didnt realize how big it was until seeing it again recently so I decided to share it. What do you guys think it would score if the other side was matching? And to give you some reference the G2 is 9" long. Here it is next to another respectable shed. They were both found in 6A.
  16. Since I haven’t tagged out yet I’ve decided to share how my December hunt is going so far and give updates in this thread after every day I go out. My dad and I drew December tags for unit 32 this year. Since it’s a pretty tough tag to draw we decided to try and hold out for some good bucks (but we’ll see how long I can hold off the trigger ha). We hunted for three days opening weekend which turned out to be pretty uneventful and warm. The first day we glassed up all does. The only bucks seen were ones my dad kicked up while moving to a new glassing location. They were both 3x3’s but too small for what we were looking for. The next two days we saw pretty much nothing but does and just a couple spikes and small forks. We left Sunday around noon and he won’t be returning to hunt until the 27th since he lives in Phoenix. Even though he wouldn’t be with me I planned on going out whenever I had time on my own. camp some does about 700 yards away doe at 300 yards away
  17. Well I ate my tag last night for dinner. A couple buddies tagged along with me and we got to our glassing spot before light. We sat and glassed for over ten hours and froze our butts off. We were glassing smaller bucks chasing does all day. I decided to stay in that spot because of all the activity we were seeing and knew a good buck would pop up. Well at about 3 o'clock he showed up and I was ready to move in on him but he disappeared over top. I felt he would come back over later so I waited and glassed. it was about 4:45 when my friend saw some deer on a different ridge so I turned my 15's on them and saw it was a good buck chasing a doe. We packed up as fast as we could and literally sprinted across a couple ridges to get there with enough light left. Man that deer ended up being a lot further than it looked and after finally getting within my shooting range I got my bipod set up, set my turret and got him in my crosshairs. After trying to settle down and catch my breath I fired. Missed! found him again since he didn't move much and missed again. He moved a little lower and I shot again. After that shot he dropped down into the canyon and out of sight. I hurried over to where he was while my buddy walked in from the top. As he was doing that the buck ran back out on top of the ridge and out of sight. I made it over to where he was when I shot at him and the snow on the ground made it clear he was never touched. I was pretty bummed to say the least and looking back I probably let buck fever get the best of me and rushed my shot. I had a great hunt and it almost worked out perfectly. Guess I'll just have to go chase that buck with my bow now.
  18. Well I hunted the 27th and 28th seeing a lot of smaller bucks and passing on quite a few. I went out today and did a little hunting in the snow and almost had a shot at a decent buck but lost him once I got within my shooting range. Looks like it's gonna come down to the last day. If a big guy doesn't show himself then I guess the smaller guys better watch out.
  19. Well I went out again for the day on Thursday and still couldn't find any shooter bucks. Many does and a couple smaller bucks. As I was walking to my glassing spot I spooked a decent 3x3 that was tall but still not quite what I was looking for. I tried to get some pictures of him but they didn't turn out great because it was still pretty dark out. At my second glassing spot I glassed up a little 2x3 that was chasing does and sparring with a spike. I watched them for a while and got some video. That was all for that day but I will be back out there the 27th and will be able to hunt until the end of the season. Shoot or Don't shoot?

He definitely looks like a nice buck. It's hard to see his right side but if it matches the left I would say shoot. I have a december tag too and from the picture he looks good enough for me.
  21. Thanks for all of the encouragement guys I'm really excited! I went out and glassed for a couple of hours yesterday morning and only saw a few does and javelinas. I wont be able to go back out until the 23rd and 24th so hopefully the bucks will be more active by then. Pwrguy and 308Nut, I read your stories about your hunts last year those were some beautiful bucks! I hope I dont have to cut it quite as close as pwrguy though
  22. This year was actually my first time applying for the December tag, I guess I got lucky. I wish I could hunt as many days as you did. Did you end up getting one?
  23. I didn’t have work today so I decided to go out to another spot I know of since the other one didn’t produce much. I got set up to glass as it was getting light. After about half I hour I caught a glimpse of a buck that was on the move. It looked like a good one so I moved positions to try to locate it in the area it was headed. I got set up again and found some does down at the base of the hill. After glassing some more I found a group of does up high and noticed some were running around, and then I saw what they were running from…the buck was chasing them. It was pretty cool to watch some rutting activity already. I was trying to see just how big he was but he chased a doe over the top of the hill before I could see him well enough to judge, plus he was pretty far away. Since there wasn’t a good way to get into position to glass the other side of the hill I decided to wait where I was because I had a feeling he would work his way back over to the side I could glass. After watching a group of three does for about 4 or 5 hours and taking an occasional nap after scanning the hill, I saw some does running at about 4:30 and sure enough the buck was behind them. I watched for a while deciding whether or not to make a move on him and used that time to get some video of him. I decided to grab my gun and head his way. I got set up within 450 yards of him and had him in my scope. I convinced myself to hold off though because I still wasn’t positive if he was big enough. It looked like he was only a two point on his right side but a nice three point on his left. I figured if I was so hesitant I shouldn’t shoot. By that time light was vanishing so I snuck out of there and I plan on going back tomorrow morning to see if I can find him again for a better look or possibly find his dad. Here's the videos links of him I was able to get. You cant really see details of him but you can make out the rack. I was about 750-800 yards away. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8myCpFoKoD8&hd=1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYi9xNthuFM&hd=1
