  1. The long day is over... We hunted hard all day and finally saw two different six points tonight. Richelle could have shot both of them at just under 500 yards, but we decided to let them grow. It was one of those days where you really had to earn it. We will be back at it again in the morning. View the full article
  2. At last light, I went out to double check Richelle's rifle for her upcoming hunts. We are shooting 180 grain vld Bergers (handloads) through her Remington Model 700 (custom trigger). We are not long distance gurus, but we do like having the ability to shoot 600 yards, if needed. We have also shot this load and gun since 2009, so that means a lot of rounds through the barrel to get to this point. I personally believe you should always try to get as close as possible, before you take the shot. You should also know your ability and your equipment's ability, prior to heading out to the field. The truth is, some people should not shoot over 100 yards and some can stretch it out to 1,000! Anyways, it was fun to see this gun perform on film, but the dang cactus was rough on my knees! 3. A look into the future...A few states still have some late rifle bull elk hunts to go, but generally those are very low success rates. With that said, here are three big young bulls with GREAT potential! Two of these bulls were filmed this year and my favorite bull, "Kurley", was filmed in 2011. Need some advice on where to apply? 6. Hunting coyotes is backed by sound science, not ideological principles. In 2009, the Arizona Game & Fish Department's survey reflected a dismal fawn-to-doe pronghorn antelope ratio in Arizona's Unit 10. After a two year coyote reduction effort we are seeing dramatic results. "The fawn:doe ratio increased to higher levels during this project than in previous efforts where only aerial gunning was used. This is most likely attributed to the combination of trapping and aerial gunning as the methods used to remove coyotes. This combination of methods has been effective with 300 coyotes removed in 2010, 194 coyotes removed in 2011, and 175 coyotes removed in 2012 for a total of 669 coyotes removed from occupied pronghorn habitat in the last three springs. The surveyed fawn:doe ratio for this unit has increased from 15:100 in 2009, to 31:100 in 2010, 53:100 in 2011 and 35:100 in 2012. The 2011 fawn:doe ratio was the highest recorded in Unit 10 since 1970." AZ Game & Fish Department Report 12-303 If you are a hunter, YOU should thank a predator hunter, because you will have a better chance of filling your freezer and mounting a pronghorn on the wall. If you eat meat, you should thank a predator hunter because they are keeping your cost down. If you are a predator hunter, you need to understand that these efforts sometimes create MORE opportunity, because of the dynamics of the coyotes' reproduction and social structure. They have to be hunted every year, because the population rebounds so quickly. View the full article

  10. Hunting isn't always about meat or inches. Richelle drew a tough late season elk tag in our home state of Arizona. This is a long hunt and isn't really a trophy hunt, or a hunt with high success rates. The season began for us at 3pm on Friday, because we are like many of you and have trouble living the real world. With the first cold front of the winter season rolling in, I left the family in the truck, and hiked up a mountain. It was an extremely difficult afternoon to glass, between the rain showers and the 30 mph winds, but I managed to glass up 3 bulls. None of the bulls were what we had in mind for the first day, so I continued searching. At last light, I heard another hunter shooting below me and later found out from some friends, that it was them. Congrats to them, as they killed a 340 type heavy horn bull!3rd morning bullsThat night was bitter cold (for AZ), but we built a fire and cooked some dogs. After filling our bellies, we gave thanks for a wonderful day and I stewed in my sleeping bag, thinking about the next day. Where to go? How to approach? The endless thoughts that run through your head. For the record... Richelle and I discussed all weekend what we were looking for in a bull, and we came to the conclusion, the right bull. We don't have a set number, although we would be kidding ourselves, if we stated we don't have hopes for a giant. Honestly, everyone does, but that's not what we are all about. We want to enjoy this hunt, as we finally have some time to enjoy a hunt together. We like our game meat and the freezer is empty. We like big antlers, but we are about hunting and spending time in God's awesome wild creation. The next morning, I decided we should look at some new country. We hiked out to our glassing spot and found 20-25 cows and calves. We also glassed up 4 mule deer does, which was AWESOME! The kids got the opportunity to look at the elk and this made our morning. That afternoon, we moved to another area and I left the sleepy crew in the 4runner. They didn't miss anything and we decided to call it a day. Not the best day for a bull elk hunter, but we did have a GREAT game of hide-n-go-seek! Again, hunting is so much more than what many perceive it to be.Hide-n-Go-SEEK!!!The third morning was a short one. We met up with our other crew, because our young nephew had a cow tag. We turned up three young bulls, but again nothing we wanted to pursue, nor did we see any cows. At 9 am, we headed for camp and reflected on an awesome weekend. Below are some of the bulls we have encountered and taken from the past on this hunt. Again, it's not about inches, although we love big antlers. Richelle's first bull from 2009, which was a similar hunt.My mom's bull from 2006, from the same unit we are hunting.Giant bull a friend took on this hunt in 2008.Giant set of sheds I picked-up from this area.Huge beam bull we found from this area. He is dead!TO BE CONTINUED... View the full article

  15. Brandon's first Coues Buck! Many people don't grow up hunting Coues Whitetail, unless they were raised in the Southwest. Actually, many of us that have grown up in the Southwest don't hunt Coues Whitetail every year, so they are a rare trophy. My cousin, Brandon Lawrence, took his first Coues Deer a few years ago and I had the pleasure of joining him. Brandon drew a special San Carlos Apache Nation raffle tag. Brandon met up with Tim Stevens from the San Carlos Apache Tribe Wildlife Department, a few days prior to his hunt. Tim told him about several quality areas to check-out, so Brandon spent the next few days scouting. I met up with Brandon the day before his hunt. We drove to a dirt tank to set up a pop-up blind, because Brandon wanted to try and take his buck with a bow. That night at camp, Brandon agreed to let us glass until 9 a.m.. As a NEWBIE Coues Deer Hunter, I was determined to glass-up a Coues Deer before we set foot in the blind.Grey Ghost in the tall wheat grass.Coues are the ultimate glassing prey!At a quarter to 9, I finally spotted some grey ghosts in the tall wheat grass. There wasn't any bucks, but I was happy none the less. I had just glassed up my FIRST Coues Whitetail. With my personal accomplishment fulfilled and Brandon's eagerness to head to the blind, we jumped in the truck and headed to the tank.As we got out of the truck, we debated on whether Brandon should take is rifle. The decision was made to pack both his rifle and bow. We were gawking at the tracks on the south side of the water when we looked up and saw a small creature. It was a coues buck! He was standing on the other side of the pop-up blind! We quickly sank to our bellies and Brandon threw his Hoyt to the side.Brandon was now looking at the buck through his scope. Brandon had the look of a determined predator, and was very happy with what he was seeing. I was frantic, because Brandon was asking for my advice. Yeah, I have had the chance to hunt, guide, and help, on many big animals, but never a Coues! After repeated questioning from Brandon, I finally stated, "I think he is around 100". Instantly, after muttering my far fetched guess, I quickly back tracked and stated, "it's your tag, you look at him"! Brandon instantly popped up and looked through my 15's. A short glance, and Brandon was ready to shoot this buck. Coues Whitetail are beautiful animals!Brandon's 97" Gross Coues Buck!Back-straps, Antlers & Memories... View the full article
  16. 198 Desert Mule Deer & 13 Year Old with a Big Muley! Just a couple of your stories... Personally, I can't say how humbled we are to open our email box and find another one of your hunting stories. It's humbling for 2 reasons: #1-It just proves there are many stories not being told and celebrated. There are a ton of great hunters that never share their story. A lot of people tell me they can't write a good story, or they don't feel like THEIR story is worthy. I say B.S., writing a hunting story isn't about being Mark Twain, it is about sharing your experiences through images and words. You don't have to be a so-called expert in the hunting industry to share your story, heck, most of you are a lot smarter than me! We have proof readers and folks that can edit your story, they edit mine. #2-We are a NEW and unique publication, which means we have a more grassroots approach to what we do. We don't have the name or promotional tools to entice some folks to submit a story. So, each and every story truly means something to us! The ORG is a great state resource to throw in your truck, but we also understand hunters want to read about their own state. Some of you also apply for other states, like me, therefore we want to read about the states that interest us as well. Honestly, we just want to continue to put out a great resource and a platform for you to tell your story, so keep sending us your stories! Thanks Again, Craig! 24. As some of you know, I have a passion for hunting and calling predators. Calling predators is one of the most exciting hunts a person can experience. 25. Hunting Mountain Lions with hounds is something you almost exclusively have to do with a guide/houndsman. Raising and maintaining top notch dry ground dogs is something that takes a fair amount of money, time, and work, in order to produce. Logan Anderson of Seven Anchor Outfitters is one of the best Mountain Lion Guides in the state of Arizona. If you are interested in going on a Guided Arizona Mountain Lion Hunt, contact us at 877.842.1258 or Logan at 928.300.1833. “I completed a Guided Mountain Lion Hunt with Logan Anderson this past January (2012). It was one of the most exciting hunts I’ve experienced. The hunt was well organized, the food was prepared by his wife, the horses well mannered and Logan knew where the cats roamed. He had hunted this particular cat for over a year, so cat hunting can be challenging. Logan Anderson, his help and his family are the salt of the earth and I look forward to hunting with him sometime in the future.†Dr. Terry Holder Dr. Holder's Guided Mountain Lion Hunt with Seven Anchor Outfitters View the full article
