I am thinking about going shed hunting in unit 24 of nm, and I was wondering where do you find shed, do the bucks shed them in the same spot every year, and how long will they stay brown. CouesSlayer

What is the best unit out of 27,28,29,and 30a?
CouesSlayer posted a topic in Coues Deer Hunting in New Mexico
I'm from New Mexico and want to go hunt in Arizona on a non guided hunt. The problem is I have to stay close to home for high school basketball. If you were in my situation what unit would you pick for a quality trophy coues deer hunt?(out of 27,28,29, and 30a) and please tell me areas or any other suggestions you have. Thanks CouesSlayer(Jordan) -
That thing is ...................alright

I think I would rather try unit 27, but the odds are so horrible. I live in unit 23, so I do know there is a 30+ spread mule deer buck that I have seen in that area. I also know there is good coues deer right along the border. I put in for the youth hunt. It's a long shot with the draw though. CouesSlayer

what's better, tree stands or stalking
CouesSlayer replied to creed_az_88's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Treestand hunting is really not the way to go with all those great big mountains to glass. Using a treestand is just to boring, and you won't see as many deer unless you're on water. But the point really is that big bucks are usually scarce on those trails you have to go get them. When glassing you can see them and go get em' instead a long boring day sitting down. That is unless you want to do it I guess it depends on the person! CouesSlayer -
I prefer glassing beacause you can see the buck and judge him and then figure out the stalk or shoot him right there. The stalk and glassing them up really is my favorie part of hunting. CouesSlayer

From reading Duane Adams book and see lots of deer come out of 32 I would say it is a respectable unit. You just have to hunt hard like in all the other units. But that is pretty much a given, depends if you are a rifle or bow hunter too.

Thanks for participating in this poll please leave your opinions about the units and the best areas in them. CouesSlayer(Jordan)
