    HEADING OUT AND DOWN

Temp in Ft. Colllins is zero this morning. No snow at this level and along the Front Range. My next stop will be Albuquerque NM. where I will sleep for a few hours. Next stop the Arizona line on hwy 10, and should be pitching the tent tuesday mid-morning after I stop and purchase a license. Thank for the replys. I am looking forward to a good trip. If you see this white Toyota Tacoma, I will be close by. Jeff, maybe next year. Yes, FT. Collins is a nice town and only a couple of hrs to elk hunting. Oneshot, I hope you get that "one shot". Maybe we will see each other. good luck. Paul

    calling in bucks with does

I would rather leave my bow at home than my grunt and bleet deer calls. One of the most important tools to hunt wt deer with. Using a deer call for mule deer may be another matter as they just do not respond to calling as wts do. Mule deer do not respond to antler rattling as wt bucks do. How and when to use them is the key. Why did these deer head out of the area? Hard to tell if the does heard the buck grunt and did not want any part of another buck, and the buck that was with them , just left because they did. Calling works best with a solo buck. Have fun and good luck. Paul

New to Mesa, New to Coues Deer

Mr J and others, I began to monitor this site four years ago and I receive help from the start which turned into a nice coues buck the first year. Pasted up one the following year looking for a larger racked one, and just missed one the third, about a 90 incher. This January will make my forth trip down for 2-3 weeks, but I have always seen wt deer and I expect to see more in a new area this year. The reason I expect to is that I have received advise from folks on this site that are willing to share. It is really all about net-working and being willing to share. Thanks to all.. Paul from Colorado

    Winter "Calling"

A combo of doe bleats and buck grunts is a mean deer calling tech. Does also make doe grunts. I believe there are Whitetail sites that have these vocalizations. Google a few, under Whitetail deer focalizations. I will down in Jan with rattling horns, and a few deer calls as I know they work SOMETIMES IN THE RIGHT CONDITIONS. Good hunting and calling. Paul

    Accuracy with broadheads part 2

you stated," great group but low left". I went to move my rest up and right.............. Not sure why you are moving your rest and not your sight if your rest have been adjusted to give you !00% down range arrow flight. ie, center shot and paper tuned. I had a new cable and string placed on my bow the other day and they lazer- adjusted, centered the arrow and rest. Great flight. Prior to this , I would one of the commerical center- shot tools with good results. I would recommend that you get your rest center- shot tuned so that your arrow is leaving the bow/rest with 100% efficiency and then sight in your field tips again for 12x impacts. This should get rid of the arrow nicking the riser problem. Are your field tips shooting ok to dead center of the target.? If they are but your BH are impacting low and left, then adjust your sight to bring the BH to dead center. Rule of thumb, is to follow the arrow with your sight adjustment. IN this case, you are shooting low. Adjust the total sight or site pin down. This will raise the arrows impact. Shooting right. Adjust the sight or site pin to the right. This will bring the sight or pin to the left. Hopefully, this will allow you enough room to move your total site or just your site pins. I did this when I shot Thunderheads, 3bl, 125 grs BH as they also shot low and to the left. With a little adjustment, they shot dead center with good arrow flight and I ended up killed a lot of big game from elk, deer, sheep, etc. Three years ago I switched BH to Magnus, 4 bld, Stingers. No need to make a pre hunting season adjustment. They shoot exactally where my field tip impact out to 60 yards. I agree, only fine tune your bow in a perfect environment, ie, no wind and on flat ground. Perfect practice results in perfect shot placement. Some may argue that your BH and field tips should impact EXACTALLY, the same, if you bow is tuned properly. Some bows and some BH may allow you to do this. SOME NOT. Make sure you are not canting your bow left or right. THis will affect arrow impact right or left. Make sure you are not dropping your bow arm upon release. THis will cause lower arrow impacts. Have some one stand behind and then to the right of you and watch your shooting form. THis may determine your form is a fault. I am sure, there will be some more advise but the main thing is that you are confident in your arrow flight and arrow impact. Finding the correct way to get you there is the challange. Also, check out the Easton Arrow Co. web site. They have instructions on how to get PERFECT, arrow fllight and bh/ft impacts. Good luck, Paul

    Accuracy with broadheads

Well, at least you are asking the question now, and not after you missed or wounded an animal because of a misplaced arrow. As was stated earlier, there are some broadheads that just do not shoot like field tips. And this is regardless if the bow is fined tuned or not. Both of my bows were paper tuned, etc, etc. I experienced this with Thunderheads, 3 bld. They shot 6 inchs low and 3-4 inches to the left at thirty yards. For years, prior to hunting season, I adjusted my sight to accomodate the difference. I kill various big game species from elk, deer, pronghorn, and sheep, goat, bear, mt. lion. Three years ago I switch to Magnus 4bls Stingers and they shoot EXACTALLY where my field tips impact. No more, pre hunting adjustments. I killed an elk, and two whitetails this year with the same arrow and broadhead (just resharpened) and plan on killing a coues deer when I come down in January with the same arrowbh If your broadheads do not impact the same as your field tips and you can not affort new BH, just adjust your pins. There is nothing really wrong with Muzzy BHs as they have accounted for many big game animals. There is no doubt that fixed BH are less forgiving and they require that your bow is tuned and theat your shooting mechanics are proper. Even mechanical BHs will not forgive poor shooting form. Practice, practice, and then practice some more. It is amazing to me how many bow hunters never shoot BHs prior to the hunting season and just presume that they impact like field tips. Thanks for the great question. Paul

    December BLAST!!!

I wil be leaving from Colorado on Jan 6 and can hunt 2-3 weeks. This will be my forth trip down and will be trying a few new areas. Bring my backpack, etc, to bivy hunt. Hope I can find enough water in places. I have had fair luck with previous harvests but hope to find a larger racked one this year. Killed a Nebraska and Kansas WT and hope to make Arizona , number three. The last time I hunted near Portal two years ago, it snowed 6 inches. Well, at least it made me feel at home. Good luck to all. Paul
