    Going out in the a.m.

Very nice, and I didn't need slippers from my trailer up in unit 8. It was beautiful. Rained pretty bad on Saturday so enjoyed coffee with the family and friends. Sunday wonderful and cloudy, chased some little velvets but couldn't get close. Monday the sun came out and was pretty warm. now we are back...miss it already. Nice cat, I had one come in close a few years back from my blind, before I could knock an arrow he was gone like a ghost. I never heard that bugger, spooky. Alex

    Unit 8 - how's the weather?

just got back from hanging with the family, a few muley does and a couple of little velvet bucks. Rain came in strong over the weekend but the roads held up well. So, I was fine in my dodge truck but there are some pooled areas. Don't forget your thermosel, mosquito's were there and sure to be horrible when Elk opens. Good luck, alex

    Unit 8 - how's the weather?

I was up there last weekend to drop my trailer off, doing some camping this weekend with the wife and kids..well my archery tag and bow are in tow. To my surprise it was pretty dry, did not see a muddy mess that I have seen in years past in August. The weather has been shown scatter Tstorms all week and will continue but when I was up there really dry and the roads were good. I didn't get drawn but love this unit for Elk, not a trophy hunter, just like the meat and jerky. Good luck to you and your wife. Alex

No buck yet but got this guy

Insane, I had one catch my eye sitting a blind one afternoon at 35 yds, never heard a thing, only caught movement and before I could knock an arrow, he walked behind a tree and never to be seen again. It was crazy how quiet it was, in the low land desert and no noise. Anyways, Amazing, spot and stalk...nutz... Alex

Has Anyone Deer Hunted Mount Lemmon Before?

This is a tough thing, I grew up in a non hunting family and have spent a lot of years trying to figure things out... Not so easy to do. This forum has helped a ton...but you just have to pay it forward to others that have questions. You don't know what you don't know, and if you are sensitive about sharing...don't. I will tell you, meeting so many hunters over the years I have found that that a lot of us just seem to be over protective of this coveted information....haha, guess what its not so secret. Most of the books I read all talked about food plots, swamps and a lot of other back east crap that has nothing to do with Arizona and our half sized white tail. There are no hunting books, well not a lot of hunting books on Az so I for one am glad there are sites like this where you can have open discussions and ask silly questions because of all the knowledge you all have. I say ask away, if I know the answer its yours =) its public land, fair chase. Good luck to all of us we need it. Im going to chase some deer with my bow this weekend up South of Williams...dodging all the weekenders up there with my boys, and drew a rifle tag in 35B November. PS, never hunted Mt lemon...Sorry im no help after all that...haha Alex

    Opening day Blues!! UPDATED

Funny how that works, right. Night time and figuring that out, and when you actually take the time you see it was labeled. Dude, like you said Magiver has nothing on you. Never give up right, there is always an option. Awesome and thanks for sharing. Alex

    350LBS!

Holy Geeze, lucky Mr. Over watch did not use the AK when he saw you using the phone. I will be down in Southern Arizona in November and hope to avoid most of that, at least the bad ones. I have bumped into border crossers in the past and they have always run the other way which works for me. Stay safe out there, Alex

You can also find a quite a few campers off of turkey creek road, if you wanted to just be around some other hunters. Mountains there are crazy so have not seen any over the boarder guys, if that was a concern of yours. Good luck, Alex

    Arizona bow fishing questions

Well now that's kind of funny, you skipped right over bow fishing haha. The where is not so easy to answer. This year I filled both my tags...the draw tag and over the counter tag up on the Yarnell / peoples valley area....and if you have been on planet earth recently, that part of the state has been all over the news for the fire and the tragedy of our fire fighters up there. I have no idea what is left after all of that. What I can tell you is this, and this took me a long time to learn, most of the guys on this forum helped me. Where to hunt - Step one - Find an area of the state you want to hunt...any desert will do. Step two, take some weekends and hike around the desert, look for sign...rooting's and shredded prickly pair cactus. Once you find that, step three - Get up on a mountain or good hill side and glass, glass, glass. For pigs, look high and then low. They are weird, for the same herd, some years they will be on the mountain side, others in the flats under the same mountains. I took my pigs to the Thrush's processing just outside of Wickenburg Az. They were awesome, cheap and fast. They made me chorizo and some sausage of which both are pretty tasty. Great on nacho's or with Eggs. =) I got a male and female, the male had a strong scent which came through the meat a little. The female, not so much on both accounts. Either way, I ate both and was fine, as were my boys =). The wife supports it, just wont eat it..and that's all I need. Alex

    Arizona bow fishing questions

Hi there, congratulations on joining the bow hunting club and wow on bow fishing. My buddy is an avid bow fisherman and there is a small following here in Az. I know that he has a pretty extensive rig on his boat with a platform and lights for night bow fishing for carp in the summer months. I went with him to lake pleasant, there is a carp spawn time that I am sure AZGFD can help you with as far as figuring out when that is. Bow fishing is challenging, or at least it was for me. I am sure any of the desert lakes contain tons of carp in the shallows, I know I have seen them swim by from the shore from time to time. I am going to stick to Javelina and Elk with my bow =). as far as whats better, you can get lucky from shore or you can visit the shallows in your canoe during the spawn you will here/see them splashing around but again, not easy and even harder to see them with a sun glare. Good luck, Alex

  21. I am headed up after Thanksgiving dinner, hopefully will have deer to go with my left over tukey. Does C.W. have a preferred list wild game processors? That would be a good adition to this website, trusted processors by region of the state. Any news out of unit 29 this year? Thanks, Alex

    Processor Questioin

Thanks everyone, I have used the one in Williams, they have been great and delivered to the valley. Since I will be in 29 thought I would check around to see what was closer to the southeasst side of the state. This was not an easy search for me on-line to find wild game processors. Thanks again, Alex

    Held at gunpoint

Well guys, I know these things happen in terms of run ins with those crossing over from mexico that should not. First, lets make a clear distinction from those who are coming over that shouldnt and those who are violent. A very big difference. I dont condone either however there is a amll majority who are bad guys vs looking to get out of a bad situation illegally. Here is my two cents for what its worth. I have hunted 36C many times and have shared a lot of the same concerns you have all just talked about. The truth is I have never had a run in, yet read the same and heard the same from others. I have taken my son there twice. I will be honest, at night at camp over a camp fire I think about it and while I am out I wonder what I will come back too if anythign yet it all works out with no disturbances. The truth is, these things do happen, just not as ofter as we think because those who are affected post and those who have a great hunt dont say anything because we enjoy the time we spent with our buddies and/or families. I see the heli's, aircraft and bp out there. Can more be done, yes! However there are military and BP and local law enforcement giving it all they can. If we took a pole, I would be interested in seeing how many hunters visit the units vs how many are atually confronted with the ding dongs running drugs or robbing hunters. I agree, write your congressman lets just not jump to conclusions and draw your crosshairs on poor saps looking for a better life. You would do the same for your family, just fortunate enough to be born in this great country. Again, no offense to anyone, just my thoughts.
