Awesome stuff, there. Thanks for sharing the story and photos.

Congrats on the pig! The Havalon is dangerous! I bought a box of 100 blunt blades, thinking they might work better. I used about 3 of them, but probably will get rid of the rest. They are shorter than the pointed ones, and your cutting surface is greatly reduced. If you decide to try them, just buy a dozen of them first.

I've never had a whole animal processed by someone else. I've taken in some grind in the past, but since I got a heavy duty grinder and 20# sausage stuffer, I do everything myself. So far this year I've processed three antelope, two deer and an elk. If I'm lucky enough to shoot a deer in AZ before the end of the year, I may take it to a processor.

I have to kill a deer first.

Dang, I think I've about found it, and I'm still in Colorado! Thanks for the help.

Thanks, I know where Famous Sam's is. I'll call first.

Can somebody post an address and the name of the business? (Jonathan's Meat Processing or "WGP"?) I've never had an animal processed by someone else, but since I'll be visiting my wife's family after my deer hunt this month, it might be easier than trying to take it home to do it.

2006 Kodiak Alaska Trip
Oak replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Thanks for bumping this to the top, Doug. I hadn't seen it before. Wonderful photography! Looks like we may have been on that rock at the same time. My buddy and I came home from our Kodiak deer trip on Oct. 31 in 2006. -
You can't actually put the NG maps on your Garmin GPS, but as others have said, you can interface with it (upload, download points, routes, etc).

Need some gun purchasing advice
Oak replied to hunterofcoues's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Congratulations on the move! I'm very envious. As others have said, you can't go wrong with the .338WM. That's probably what I'd be looking at. Perhaps a M700 XCR... -
I am not computer stupid but I did not understand any of that I was watching this post to see if you could also. It would be nice. Kml is just one of the file extensions that is recognized by Google Earth (GE). So the file might be named something like "AZhuntunits.kml". A kml file of the Arizona hunt units is available for "free" to Huntin' Fool members on their website. I'm sure other sites like the one listed above can get you the same thing for a fee.
-
You need to have a kml file of the boundaries and open it in GE. I don't think it is automatically available on GE.

A great GPS, for sure. You might need to lower your price if you really want to get rid of it. They are going for about $180 new right now.

Wow...incredible bucks. Congratulations!

Wow, that's awesome! Way to get it done on probably one of the toughest hunts in the state. If you are inclined to give us the story, I'd love to hear it. Only bad thing is that your photos will probably inspire more folks to apply for that tag without realizing just how difficult the hunt is.

Thanks for the info. Please continue to share your handiwork.

Doug, could you tell me what kind of filter, if any, you have on your lens? Your photos always seem to be largely free of the haze I always get with long distance landscape shots. Great work!

I'm not sure what is too many, but I may be approaching it. My wife is pretty good about it, as long as I don't overspend the bank account too bad. I have gone hunting in Alaska the last three years, so this year she told me she didn't think I should go on any "major" hunting trips. I asked her to define "major", and she said outside the lower 48. I figured I could work around that. I've got deer, elk, and antelope in Wyoming, deer in Montana and Arizona, along with deer, elk and antelope in Colorado. But just to smooth things over a bit, I took her to Alaska for a week at the beginning of the month. I should be safe another 2 or 3 years now.

AAA, 308Nut, Bill....all great bucks!!! That is a super fun hunt. I went to Kodiak in 2006, passed up some nice bucks while searching for a monster, and ended up shooting this buck the evening before we were picked up. They are super stocky deer...almost look like a mule deer that has been sawed off at the knees. I will go back some day and find that monster.

*HELP ME SCORE THIS BULL* @ i added a few pics for the skeptics
Oak replied to justahunter's topic in Elk Hunting
Widests point inside the main beams. Great looking bull. I wouldn't care what he scored. -
They sure look the same to me. Those right sides look identical. Bummer...

Arrow through the forearm? OUCH!! The thought of a carbon arrow coming apart when shot has always worried me. I'm sure you have all seen this photo before:

Thanks guys. Those were both good places I hadn't thought of. The AZ BLM GIS website did not have the file, and Huntin' Fool only has .kml (Google Earth) files. I'm pretty sure I can convert the .kml to a shapefile, though.
-
Does anyone know if GIS hunting unit shapefiles are available anywhere? I searched the AZGFD website a bit, but came up with nothing. Thanks...

A COUPLE OF DAYS OF SCOUTING PICTURES!
Oak replied to Lance's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
Wow, there are some great animals there, but that exiting goat really caught my eye! Thanks for sharing.
