Pertinent Trivia Question #5
wetmule replied to Outdoor Writer's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
1. Sounds like somethng Jack O'connor might say 4. I'll guess Jack Nicklaus, cause I know he's a dedicated hunter and the only golfer I know that hunts religously. The rest I'd have to cheat or think a little harder -
Pertinent Trivia Question #II
wetmule replied to Outdoor Writer's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
How about Julia Childs I've seen her attack some dead fish like they were "surly brutes" (bad joke) -
Good post CnS, I completely agree with your take. The few auction and raffle tags (3 of each species) that are distributed to the conservation groups are not factored at all when the G&F sets the permits. In other words no one is taking away any potential permits from any average joe in the draw. Now if you are talking Utah where they give out hundreds of special permits, that is a different story and one I don't agree with. I believe Az is at its max with regards to the commissioners tags and I don't see any scenario where they will authorize more. The few we do have here have literally raised millions of dollars for wildlife, habitat, water etc. as explained above by CnS, and one need only to venture into the field to see all the work done by those dollars that would not have happened otherwise.

Found a big WT skull and metate!

Nice job Amanda, That Spadefoot on the centerline is reeeely a cool shot. Down here in parts of the Valley there's lots of Colorodo River Toads, they seem to magically appear after it rains. It's a blast to sit and watch them flip their tongues out and gorge themselves on those flying ants and other insects that hatch after the rains. -

Muzzeloader Question
wetmule replied to azbownunter22's topic in Muzzleloader hunting for Coues Deer
I will second coues addicts post. Can't go wrong with the Omega 50, just about everything I load shoots well and it is easy to clean. I shoot 100 -130 gr pyrodex pellets and also triple 7 pellets. Precision 240 & 275 gr. dead centers shoot good. I've also had good luck with the Powerbelt 295, Hornady 300 gr. SST as well as the shockwave 250's all out to about 200 yds. I personally wouldn't shoot further than 200, but it's pretty accurate out to it. Work up a load that shoots good and you will have alot of fun with it. -
Good Job DOC, In 1994 approx 1 mil. innocent people were murdered in Rwanda, not with guns but machetes. Had those people had a few guns to protect themselves, that number of a million dead would have been a fraction of what it ended up being. Guns don't kill people, people kill people, guns are just one of many options available to those that wish to do harm, they also happen to be one of if not the best deterrent to those same people bent on causing harm.

Brad, I'd go back to ASU and ask for my money back if I were you.

Cool video Amanda, personally I wouldn't feel too good about my chances using that stuff on a charging grizzly. An inquisitive black bear sniffing and poking around trying to satisfy his curiosity and a charging grizzly coming full bore that has his mind made up are two completely different critters. In the latter scenario I'd much prefer a 338 win. mag with a full magazine and one in the chamber, to a can of spray. Anyways very cool footage and a thrill I'm sure for you and your husband, and possibly a change of shorts for the photographer. Thanks for sharing

this country has gone to hell!
wetmule replied to azryan's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Tough break, I hope you get it all sorted out where you don't get completely hosed. I have a few illegal stories to pile on as well, so you are not alone. My truck was stolen by illegals - took a quick trip in it down to Mexico and they brought back a load of MORE illegals, cops caught them in Tolleson, they ditched the truck and about 8 of them fled on foot never to be seen again. I did get my truck back in good shape though with no damage other than about 700 additional miles. My girlfriend was rear ended by you guessed it (illegals with no insurance or drivers license) they hit and ran, she followed them and called 911 on her cell and the cops were able to intercept them, but no insurance so she had to pay for the damage. I'm quite sure they are doing business as usual. Her dad was hit as a pedestrian in a Home Depot parking lot by you guessed it (Illegals with no insurance) messed up his back and leg pretty good with considerable medical bills, all paid for by you guessed it YOU and I. Yes I agree this country has gone to heck! -

AZGFD Hunt Recommendations
wetmule replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Jim your above post is very heartening and well said and I am on your side and agree with you. There are perhaps a few within the Dept., a few commissioners I can think of and one Governor that might do well and be wise to read your above statement - as a little refresher course. The AZ GFD has a long and storied history as one of the finest around and a leader and the envy of many a state Game Dept. I'm sure. I hope the powers that be try to continue that legacy and not get away from those principles that put them in the front. In my opinion there is a survey every year that the Dept. gives out in the form of the annual hunter application process and the results thereof. One need only look at those areas with very tough odds and the number of applicants for those units to understand that people like what they are putting in for and to drastically change the management and harvest goals of those areas might get people a little bit on edge. Anyways, thanks for all your personal and professional input. -
Who is this Ed Sullivan fellow you speak of ? (kidding), although you did just date yourself. I'm wondering how ol "Hap" would stack up against my all time favorite, "Warrior" ? I'm guessing pretty similar except Hap may be a bit more people friendly. Great Story and pics.

AZGFD Hunt Recommendations
wetmule replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
The Kaibab and the areas North of the river are managed under the Alternative Mule Deer Management Plan. What this means is, these areas are managed to provide hunters a higher quality experience (less hunter crowding and a higher percentage of older age class animals). People don't apply for the Kaibab and the Strip to just go hunting, they apply for the opportunity that awaits them in the form of higher buck doe ratios, older animals and less hunter density per square mile. The same could also be said of the early rifle, muzz and archery bull hunts but I don't believe there is a management plan for elk similar to the Alt. Mule Deer Mgmt. Plan up north. I think the Dept. failed to distinguish and separate this fact when they conducted their survey and perhaps should have had a separate survey or somehow incorporated this into the one they conducted. There CLEARLY is a reason why there are so many applicants and why it is so difficult to get drawn for the hunts North of the river as well as many of the better elk hunts. The reason is the antler potential those units posess. The AZ G&F has clearly been a leader among the many Western states for many many years in making the most of the wildlife resources we have here in AZ. I'm all for hunter opportunity, but to degrade these hunts in the name of it is a mistake in my opinion, especially under the Alt. Mule Deer Mgmt. Plan. (I'm not saying they are). The Dept. need only look at the draw odds in the better units and the many thousands of applicants that apply, to understand that there is a gigantic block of trophy hunters out there that consistently apply for certain areas even though the odds are slim, and to discount their wishes, to keep quality hunt units in the mix would be a huge mistake and I think in the long run would would be a shot in the foot in the form of less and less applicants, if a three year old animal is the best a hunter can expect. Personally every single hunter I know would disappear and quit applying if the lure of the big antler challenge goes away. I hope the Dept. can find a balance because on the one hand they risk loosing a large segment of the hunting public while courting the upcoming hunter and trying to provide hunter opportunity. It is my opinion that the Dept. and the public is going to have to come to terms with the fact that the Dept. can't provide opportunities for everyone and to do what is best for the herds, and to me that is a good healthy mix of all age class animals. -
Arizona Deer Association Banquet
wetmule replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Just a shout out to all the cw.com members in attendance and a BIG THANK YOU for all your support and coming to the event. I recognized alot of CW.com members from the great pics you guys post here. I wish I had time to meet and talk to everyone. It was great to see and talk to Allen his wife & Dwayne Adams and I briefly met and shook hands with younghunter and a couple others to name a few. Allen, I'm pretty sure the buck in the Jay Cox print and the rack we auctioned are not the same. The buck we auctioned for G & F was killed in 05' in 12-B, I believe. Alot of the Cox prints are somewhat older and many of them were done in the 90's. I think it's just a coincidence that they look similar. I too agree the amount it sold for was pretty insane. All it takes is more than one bidder that wants it and you see the results. The guy the rack was confiscated from wanted it back understandably, as well as a couple other bidders. Hopefully the G&F will put that $$$ to good use, as it all goes back to their law enforcement program. Anyways, thanks guys & gals for supporting the event, we really appreciate it. Kevin -

Very cool Amanda, I know both Todd and the Pugh's and it will be great to see them. To whom it may concern - the list of Auction items is only about half complete and also includes off the top of my head: a NewMexico muley hunt and an incredible Peninsula Brown Bear Hunt with Creig Butler of www.redbearguides.com Bob probably still needs his Marco Polo and Ibex doesn't he?? maybe not I haven't seen him in a while. Great fun at the CW table. -
Very cool pics and great story, you might try and lower the dosage on that "Hen In Heat" cover scent you're wearing, you could be in for more than you bargained for.
