SHOOTER

So its been a while since I've posted but I've got a question or two. I've been shooting long range ( 700 + yards ) off and on for about 10 years. I have just got to the point where I can coldbore shoot an MOA sized gong at 1000 yards. It took lots of shooting but with my data I have collected I feel like any given day,temp,elevation etc I can make a coldbore shot out to 1000 with my .338 ...that being said I'm not trying to brag, it took me way longer that I would have liked and I still could never bring myself to shoot an an animal that far. The thought of wounding an animal because of a botched shot makes me sick. So seeing all the 700-1300 yards kills now days makes me wonder if I'm missing something? Are people shooting this good? Or are they getting some sighter shots in to get it done? What's your shooting experience and how far do you feel comfortable with a coldbore shot? Thoughts? Opinions? This isn't to start a argument. Or bash other hunters. It's more of a question to see how other long range shooters feel they can perform on a coldbore shot.

Don't pay much attention to the velocity on the box or the chrono ...the chrono is a good starting point and good to make sure you have low ES. Reloading i try to keep mine below 10fps. Even the better ballistic apps need some fine tuning to get the drops right. Go out and validate the drop with your rifle at extended range (the further the better) and mess with the app till the drop calculator match what your actually seeing in the field... also I could never get the cheap apps to do this much past 600yards. I would go with applied ballistics or bullet flight they have been way easier to tune to my rifle/loads and way more accurate than any other apps. You have to know how your rifle shoots. I've never been abe to plug in the speed off the chrono and the conditions and been able to hit what I was aiming at past 600- 700yards. It all takes alot of shooting and recording to get it all to line up. Once you do tho it's cool to see how well you can range dial and shoot and hit.

If you reload much you will find some of the stuff RCBS sells is cheap plastic crap. That being said the RCBS rockchuker kit gives a guy a good start and you can later replace the few cheaper items that come in the kit if as your reloading skills increase.

Thanks for the responses. These are the answers I was looking for! Looks like some guy's are doing some real good long range coldbore shots on game. For me it seemed like out to 700 was pretty doable. But after that is really when the conditions really started to come into play. 800+ took alot of shooting and data collecting to finally get consistent. The wind has been the hardest to get a handle on. The wind picks up a little and my coldbore hits are out the window.

I thought this might turn into a good discussion but this might be going down hill fast. The reason as stated above is to see if there are some good shooters among us or if people are just buying these high end rifles and throwin lead. I thought it would be interesting to see how well people can shoot ,how much they practiced ect.. so answer the questions, contribute to the discussion or move on.

Good question. Aside from here I don't have any social media accounts. So most of these kills I see are shown or told to me so I dont ask. But when I'm talking to the person that made a long shot I will ask them how many shots it took to hit. I've had some interesting answers. But it isn't often I am able to talk to the shooter.

I have an archery deer tag for sept 1. The country I have to hunt has decent deer numbers but it is thick cedars and some sage brush. How would go about hunting the thick country where glassing for a stalk isn't very effective? Has anyone had much luck sitting water for mule deer? I am gonna have trail cams out and do some scouting I just wonder what is the most effective way to hunt this thick country with a bow. Thanks

My schedule will not allow me to hunt any archery hunts this year so I am looking into some later hunts. I saw the November NM unit 15 muzzleloader elk Mature bull hunt. I am not looking for any secret spots just wondering if anyone has hunted this hunt and how they would rate it? How was your unit 15 experience? Did you see many elk? I imagine it could be tough but also may be a ticket for a decent sized bull. Thanks for any input!

Thanks for the input. I have hunted with friends on the archery hunts but I know this November tag would be a whole different world. I think glassing and looking for bachelor groups of bulls would be a fun challenge. For those who have hunted the late hunt did you see lots of hunters on this hunt or was everyone pretty dispersed?
