I went up to the SCI Convention on Thursday and Friday in Las Vegas. It was great to see some old friends and make some new ones. Sometimes I forget how many hunters we have in this country and its nice to see people booking hunts and enjoying themselves. The KUIU guys and the Outdoorsmans both had booths and lots of interest from patrons. The new KUIU Sleeping bags are awesome looking and I can't wait to try one out! View the full article

Here is Joe's buck from our Sonora, Mexico coues hunt. Joe made a great shot at 400 yards to bag his first coues deer. Jack and Joe, father/son, were awesome to hunt with and we enjoyed many laughs throughout the week. Darr captured the harvest on Joe's buck and we will be posting it soon. View the full article

Darr and I just got back from a couple of great weeks of coues deer hunting in Sonora, Mexico. We had a great time with our hunters and they were able to harvest some real sweet bucks. The first bit of photos are from our second week with the father son duo of Jack and Joe from Wisconsin. They both shot very nice coues bucks and we just had a ball with them. Jack made a great shot at just over 300 yards with his .257 Weathery Magnum. His buck was chasing a doe and was a little hard to keep track of. We had lots of fun and look forward to sharing some of the photos and videos from our adventure over the coming days. View the full article

On our first week in Mexico, we were joined by Jason Hairston (KUIU President), Brendan Burns, Brady Miller and Huntin' Fool Consultant Dave Loescher. We shared some great camaraderie and had lots of fun. Brendan and Dave both harvested nice bucks and Brendan also got a big boar Javelina. Nate Simmons of Western Hunter TV captured Brendan and Jason's hunt on video. View the full article

Gear Review: Havalon Knives
Jay Scott posted a topic in Jay Scott Outdoors/Colburn and Scott Outfitters
Gear Review: Havalon Knives keep getting better Posted by Janis Putelis I was beyond pleased with the characteristics and capabilities of the Havalon Piranta and the Havalon Torch. Lightweight, always sharp, with a great fit for efficient work. Now the Havalon Bolt is out and with its bigger handle and bright hard to lose colors is an improvement on an already exceptional product. It also accepts the new 60A blade which is 20% thicker (thus tougher) than the 60XT. Most complaints I've heard about Havalons involved blades snapping. I've snapped a few myself but it was always from too much wrenching on my part. I've yet to snap a 60A blade. Both of the elk I killed this year were gutted, skinned, and quartered using ONE blade a piece. Usually I'm a stickler about replacing the blade halfway through to keep my pace and stay safe, but using the Bolt with 60A blades, I was hanging full game bags before I stopped to think that I hadn't changed a blade. I would go so far as to say that the Havalon knives are the best new product added to my hunting gear in the last decade. I just shake my head when I watch other hunters struggle with a standard fixed blade and then swap it out for their back up knife, whose blade is often duller than the first. If you don't use a Havalon yet, you are truly missing out. I put a fresh blade on for de-boning the quarters. This makes for... very quick work! View the full article -
Janis' Colorado 2nd Rifle Season OTC Elk with KUIU
Jay Scott posted a topic in Jay Scott Outdoors/Colburn and Scott Outfitters
Colorado OTC 2nd Rifle Season Elk with KUIU The snow in the high country was crunchy and the moon was in full bloom. I had seven days to kill a cow and a bull elk. Normally not the season I choose to hunt in CO because the woods are as crowded as they come, but my work schedule dictated those dates, so I made the most of it. Since filling the freezer is as important (if not more) as chasing antlers for me and my family, I gave myself two days to find a mature bull, and after that the focus would switch to tender vittles. I glassed hard, spent the night out at 11,000 ft a couple nights, but the old boy eluded my gaze. The morning of day 4 I glassed up a group of 15 elk and made a plan for the evening. The wind cooperated, the plan was executed and I had a cow down. With great friends I had her packed out late the next day with enough time for an evening glass; however, it did not produce. The morning of day 5 found me on one of favorite glassing benches looking across the valley at 4 bulls and 5 cows. Perfect! I hunted them hard for the next two days with not a hair to show for it. They just slipped away; as elk tend to do. Luckily for me, a friend had been doing some glassing nearby and reported a small bunch of elk with a couple of bulls in it. For the final afternoon hunt of the season, I made the push to where the elk had been seen the eve before. 3 miles in, 2,000 ft up; it was here, where after the barrage of pressure that comes with CO's 2nd season, that the elk were holed up. With 30 minutes to spare in the season, as I crept along a high bluff, I heard the faint "click, clack, click, clack" of young bulls sparring. I peeked over the next rise and two hundred yards below the herd was feeding happily, having darn near made it through the brunt of the hunting season. I said a quick "thank you" for the opportunity. Shooting light faded and the season ended. I let the rest of the group slowly filter out before heading down to quarter my bull. When many a hunter struggled that week because of tough conditions, I was very proud to have filled two tags. Local experience, elk experience, and being in shape for the mountains all helped in my success. Having the lightest, most appropriate gear for the hunt aided the outcome as well. I did not kill the biggest bull on the mountain this year, but by having gear that allowed me to hunt hard, hiking 5-10 miles a day, carrying camp on my back at times, traveling from 8 k-11 k ft often twice in a day, I managed to fill both of my tags. I simply was not as weighed down. Carrying ten extra pounds on a simple day hike is manageable, but multiply those ten pounds over seven days of hunting and you've literally carried tons more weight. This adds up on the knees, the back, the thighs, and can sway your decision on day seven. Go on one more elk hunt or stay at home on the couch and catch the Sunday night game? Thanks to KUIU's lightweight gear, my legs are always game for one more elk hunt. View the full article -

Kaz-I understand your frustration but I, like others on here would like to say that the guys at the Outdoorsmans are #1 in customer service. Was a mistake made in this case? Sounds like it but I can assure you there is not a more people oriented retail shop out there. Please see below. I got this message from Cody, who is the manager at the Outdoorsmans and was having trouble logging on from remote location. Jay, I was hoping you could help me out. I read a post on CWT.com that I would like to address. I am having trouble with signing in. Would you post the following for me: kazpilot25, my name is Cody Nelson and I am the Manager of Outdoorsmans. I just wanted to extend my apology for the experience you had today with our Holiday schedule. I am not sure of the information you got when you called today. I will look into the matter on Thursday when we reopen. We received multiple phone calls today regarding our hours today. 9-4 PM. I sincerely hope our team did not give incorrect hours. I know that after our closing time regardless of the day once we have begun shutting the shop down it becomes a security issue for us to reopen the doors. That does not excuse wrong information. I will look into making our business hours better known through the holiday season. That responsibility is mine. I will make our hours better known. Please call me on Thursday anytime after noon. 602-944-7141. I will make it worth your time and hopefully earn your business. Again, my apologies for any time wasted or inconvenience this may have caused. Happy New Year! Sincerely, Cody Nelson Manager OUTDOORSMANS/Wilderness Athlete 602-944-7121

I am not sure where this question was posted but I just saw it now. I thought I was the only one who could actually post in this section. Most of our photos have been taken with small point and shoot canon cameras, mine is a elph 110HS. My new camera is a Canon SL1. I love photography and video but have a lot to learn. I try to take a lot of photos in order to get a few good ones. There are certainly much better guys on here that take much better photos than I that might be able to help you. I appreciate the question and am always happy to help. Please email, pm or call in the future. I apologize for not seeing the question. This section automatically posts off my blog so I go long periods of time without looking at this section. Not making excuses but trying to make you aware. If you have specific questions send me an email at jayscottoutdoors@gmail.com I probably answer 5 questions a week from cwt members and other hunters and enjoy helping. Take Care JS

Those pics were between 100-200 yards. All pics were on the lowest power setting of my spotting scope 30X. I really like the setup and will continue to try to figure out all of the best settings on the camera. Lots to learn but that is the fun part. -

Digiscoping- Swarovski ATX Spotting Scope with TLS APO Adapter
Jay Scott posted a topic in Jay Scott Outdoors/Colburn and Scott Outfitters
I recently upgraded my digiscoping setup to the Swarovski ATX 95mm and the Swarovski TLS APO adapter. I was able to use it for the first time on Brian's Unit 6A Rocky Mtn Sheep. I am very excited about the quality of photos that I was able to take in my first few days of use. Cody at the Outdoorsmans has been trying to get me to upgrade for awhile now and I have to say the spotting scope is amazing. The image clarity at 70X is actually very good. When discussing my options with Cody, my original concern was the extra weight and size difference. There is always a tradeoff in quality of the image and the weight of the scope. I would say after using the scope for a few days it is by far the best spotting scope I have ever looked through. Another friend, Trent Swanson, who is a sales rep for Swarovski urged me to try the TLS APO adapter with the Swarovski ATX. I really like the whole system. Trent and another friend of mine, Russ Jacoby, do a lot of digiscoping and they both shoot the Canon SL1 camera so I picked one up and that topped of the incredible system. I have to say I am very happy with the images that I captured and I look forward to sharing them on this blog. I am going to be taking this digiscoping setup to Mexico for Coues deer and running it through the true test. I will still be using my Tines Up Adapter and the Outdoorsmans Digidapter as well. Below are photos of Brian's big ram that I was able to capture with my new setup. On a more important note December is the time of year we are celebrate the birth of our Christ and Savior Jesus. It seems to me that our society has so easily forgotten what this time of year is about. Its seems myths of Santa, reindeer and obnoxious gift giving has encapsulated our country. Isn't it funny how our thoughts and minds get so distracted on things that have no real meaning. Santa doesn't save lives but Jesus sure does. Merry Christmas to you and your families! Brian Rimsza's Rocky Mtn Bighorn Sheep Hunt Photos 4
Jay Scott posted a topic in Jay Scott Outdoors/Colburn and Scott Outfitters
Brian checked his Unit 6A sheep in today with the AZGFD. The gross score came in over 178 and the net score was 176 7/8. If this score holds up after the 60 day drying period it will have a chance to beat the Arizona state archery record. There is a whole bunch of people that both Brian and I would like to thank for their role in the preparation and execution of this hunt. All of these people mentioned below had roles in one way or another in making this hunt a success. We would like to thank the following people for their support, Nicole Rimzsa, Bill and Mary Keebler, Matt Cutlip, Bob Rimsza, Skip Rimsza, Devin Hancock, Bobby Smith, Ty Hart, TJ Moore, Brian Hansen, Jole Guthery, Corky Richardson, Joseph Savoini, Cody Nelson, Trent Swanson and Greg Koons. I am working on the video of the hunt and hope to have it available soon. View the full article
