    Desert Pics

Thanks guys. Yes Addicted, it's a spring, Middle of June and the water is seeping out of the Rock. Had so many pics of quail and had to go through and delete, arggghhh!!!! Had it on three shot burst and reset every 15 seconds so I don't miss a good one. Need to get a cheap cam because this spring is on the map and off of a road. Put in for Mule Deer for this Unit, keep your fingers crossed for me! Also hope to get drawn for Pig for this unit too!

    $200 trail cam suggestions?

I kind of wonder if the kind of hunters who steal Trail Cams, carry lock cutters in their pack. I guess the bearbox would help keep the average joe stumbling onto them. Apache, I just bought two Moultrie 990i 's for $135 with Free Shipping off Ebay. They are more pricey but they have the NO Flash feature, takes pics with IR. Still just learning how to use them, but the video seems decent. Ditto on what the guys before said - If you don't care about quality, just want to KNOW what's out there go cheaper

They are starting to hit CC

I have never hunted Elk before, so I thought I was sitting good putting in for a Cow Elk Tag as first choice and 2nd. A good way to learn the ins and outs. Nothing. I did have to update my credit card around the 11th due to Capital One Reissuing due to Fraud....but maybe I just didn't get lucky. Guess it really is HARD to get an Elk Tag. So bummed. Should I get ready for this kind of frustration for the rest of my life if I keep putting in for Elk?

    salt or corn?

wow you really took that personal. I received a lot of likes for that post so I'm not alone in my thoughts. I'm sure I'm from another generation of hunters and we did it all on our own I'm jumping in on this one...you did it all on your own? What'd u choke your game to death? You never bought a better performing rifle or a nicer set of glass? All of us hunters do things to improve our odds. Cams are no different. GreenMachine you hit it on the money. 1shot if you are claiming that cameras are the reason that more big trophy animals are being killed then why don't we also look at the fact that technology has made better equipment that everyone uses and not just focus on cameras alone. What about high powered rifles and scope by which "hunters" shot there game at further distances (up to 1000 yards)? Ever think about this? How about the increased use of high powered optics and GPS gadgets? How about the increase in dedicated, passionate and hardworking hunters that go the extra mile to harvest a mature animal? How about that fact that some ppl are LUCKY, and the fact that there has been an increased use of outfitters to harvest trophy animals. You make it sound like trail cameras ALONE are the reason for the increase trophy harvest, which by the way how are you coming up with this information that more trophies are being killed?? Some of the biggest trophy animals were killed 50 plus years ago, and they were killed all the time. What has changed is how information spreads. Whenever someone kills a trophy now a days, everyone hears about it so it may seem as if more trophies are being killed. Are there more trophy animals being taken now compared to previous years? Perhaps...but there are also more hunters now then before. If there indeed are more trophies being killed each year, trust me its not because of cameras, its due to a huge combination of factors. Cameras are a tool, just like 15x56 swarovskis, vortex scopes, GPS, quads, maps, high powered rifles, compound bows... they are all tools that help us reach a higher potential as hunters. As mklong40 said, there is EXTREME Ignorance when it comes to people talking about the use of trail cameras. Do ppl really believe that just by putting a camera out you are going to have immediate results and a trophy buck is just going to appear? Most of the time you get nothing. People don't realize the amount of work that goes into utilizing a camera. You have to scout the area first and locate the game before you even put the camera out. I am no one to say that one mans style of hunting is better then the next; as long as it is ethical and legal. Last I checked, camera are still legal. Therefore, please respect the hard work and hunting methods that others use even if they do not aline with yours. 1shot this is not an attack nor do I take it personal, just making a point based on your arguments. P.S. Your comment of "I received a lot of likes for that post so I'm not alone in my thoughts." You only had 1 like when I checked. Yup sounds like a lot to me. not once in my post did i say that cameras were the only reason that trophy animals were being taken i only stated that more are being taken because of the cameras so please read before you start ripping someone for something they did not say. You yourself said that first you locate the game before you put your cameras out and my point was that if you had to pattern that buck yourself instead of watching them on film and knowing when and how often the are hitting certain tanks you might not be as successful. And yes a lot of the biggest trophies were taken years ago and again my post stated 110 inch deer and 380 inch elk which are a far cry from the biggest. It's funny that i also referred to the question about baiting the animal but no one had much to say about that and it seems a lot of times when you see a camera you also see salt blocks, deer candy, corn and anything else that works(and I'm not saying always) but this is a huge issue in my opinion. I myself have talked to outfitters that will tell you they have 3,4 or even more 110 inch bucks hitting tanks and waiting for clients to shoot those bucks because they know that deer are creatures of habit so i just suggested that if they had to spend time to pattern those bucks instead of letting the camera do it for them they wouldn't be as successful. As far as the 1000 yard shots there aren't one tenth of one percent of hunters that could even make a 1000 yard shot.also a lot of my likes were sent by personal friends that are members through text and phone calls so next time i post i will take into consideration that the CWT Police are watching. And last but most important the member that posted the question was not offended at all. we have spoken on the phone with each other in the past and I'm actually helping him to learn a specific unit and have plans to hunt with him this fall. it just seems odd that so many people took this personal and it wasn't intended to attack anyone it is my opinion and i will continue to do everything i can to see that they become illegal to use. This is Classic. 1stshot from Scottsdale says "please read before you start ripping someone for something that they did not say" Look at your own words 1stshot from your original post, and I quote " I would like to put a 12 guage slug right into every trail camera i see." And then you go on to add that Hunters are getting lazy, implying from the use of Cameras. Yeah, that's not going to stir up the pot. I'm sure you hike all the way from Scottsdale to your Unit, use no "Lazy" tools like Glassing equipment, ect, and then Jump down from your tree with a Spear. Greenmachine made me laugh so hard when replying to 1stshot "Whatdu do, choke your game to death?" Hilarious. I think the lesson learned for Capo Josh and others who are getting into Hunting (like myself) and using Cameras is everytime you place something on PUBLIC land, you have a chance of it being taken by numerous individuals, jealous hunters, hello kitty anti's, plain thieves, dirty poachers or shot by the old timers who did it all on their own.

They are starting to hit CC

First time ever putting in for Elk Tag. Chose Cow tag because I thought that gave the best odds at getting drawn with no Bonus Points. No charges on Cards, very depressing. Not giving up hope, but really thought I had a good chance at getting drawn. (sigh)

Skunked In 33. Anyone get one?

Had to head back to Phoenix empty handed because I Gotta save those days off in case I get drawn for Elk. Was hunting Chimney Rock area, tons of old scat but nothing fresh. Like they moved out of the area. Curious if anyone on here got one in Unit 33. Talked to several hunters on the 3rd day from different areas and not one had seen a pig or even scat. Weird, would herds migrate higher up? Was thinking no way they would be higher, but no one down lower had gotten a pig. Moved to back side of Mt. Lemmon highway but boy was it crowded. Thanks!

Sun devil, you might be right. Maybe Lion population is making a dent in the Pigs Population.

Skunked In 33. Anyone get one?

Thanks to all for the replies. Only have two buddies who hunt (one of them got skunked with me) so it's neat to be able to talk to you all. Going to try to be on the board more. - You guys bring up some good points. It did seem like too many Hunters in the unit. - I remember seeing Pig all the time in Reddington road/ Monument in the late 90's when I used to live in Tucson and worked for the Forest Service. Remember finding dead pigs left to Rot in the road before Bellota Ranch Road and shotgun shells. Hunters always seemed to have a game bag hanging in tree during General Rifle Hunt. I even remember a pig running across the road and a pointy helmet bike rider collided into him around soldiers trail. - I only scouted one weekend ( will only put in for pig and deer in unit 21 from now on) due to being poor. Wasn't even going to hunt Pig, because I was brainwashed that they taste bad. But ended up picking up left over tag. - When scouting, found lots of fresh sign way back by Monument by Chivo Falls, past Italian Trap. But I also had found fresh sign in Chimney Rock area and since we didnt' take quad we chose this area to hunt. This was back on New Years, so maybe they are just migrating as it seems about 50/50 of hunters are not seeing anything and the others are filling their tags.

The couple that you found look great! I've never found that many at once when I go out, guess I'm looking in all the wrong places. Nice pack set up.

    Unit 30A, First Whitetail hunt

Yeah, that was interesting seeing fresh bear poop in every drainage and the two track we were hiking in on. We were hunting the area around Bruno Saddle, REAL thick! Here's to getting drawn in a different UNIT next year.

    Unit 30A, First Whitetail hunt

SSMoore, curious how you did? Maybe you went back down yesterday. It sure did Rain Thanksgiving night and opening morning, one guy slid off the road into a tree. I had to leave Sunday night empty handed and I'll say you boys were right, that is a hard Unit. Ghost deer, tracks everywhere, I'd second that perhaps they live in caves. Hopefully I'll get drawn next year so I don't have to do the left over tags again.

    Unit 30A, First Whitetail hunt

Ssmoore- Thanks for the offer but I traded in my cellphone so I could afford my 4x4. I'll hunting south of Rucker Road if you guys don't see anything by Saturday Night. Couldn't get Monday off work so I've got three mornings and evenings. Here's a pick from my scouting trip, Can't wait, only 1 more day!

Yeah, I kind of regret not going for the Santa Ritas, I know that area better and there were alamost the equal number of leftovers tags in that area.

    Unit 30A, First Whitetail hunt

Ssmoore, it's my first whitetail hunt and first time in that Unit. When are you going in? I'm heading out on Turkey day to try and grab a camp site, I'm used to Unit 33 with hunters everywhere so I'm hoping that this one ( 200 permits for the whole unit) will be less crowded. I decided to not waste time with the Doz Cabezas and will be north of the Pedgregrossos. Good luck, post pics when you get back and I will too.
