how do you get the "new" smell out of your ground blind
kennyazman replied to kennyazman's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
thanks for the advice guys. I like the idea about the cow pies. I'll have to try that. -
Ok guys, with august 24th fast approaching I cant quit thinking about getting the chance at a nice velvet muley! I have my camera going in a spot and I am getting some promising pictures but they are not done growing yet. I have never killed a deer in velvet and I am want one hanging on my wall so bad. Let's see some pics of some velvet muleys that you guys have to help pass the time until opening day. Big or small, I dont care, I just want to see some velvet!

These are all great. How about some dead ones. On the ground or on the wall.

I had the second archery hunt in 19A last year. I tagged out but it wasnt over water. I did however sit water and if i didnt miss I would have gotten one on the first day. I think you will be probably be ok to put up a blind the same day. Its pretty hot up there at this time of year and they have to come to water. I sat water most of the opening day and they were coming in at all times of the day. If you have any quistions about the area pm me. I spent most of the hunt up there last year before i finally tagged out and I hunted all over the unit.

127 1/8. Thanks for the contest! -
I was just curious what you guys think about how long deer/elk/antelope meat would last in the freezer. I love the stuff but my wife not so much and since she does most of the cooking it takes us awhile to eat through all the deer and other game that i get. all of the meat is butchered proffesionaly and wrapped in the white freezer paper. what do you guys think?

Not Drawn!! oh well

This is my first attempt at doing this whole game camera thing. I set up my camera on a tank 3 weeks ago. I checked it two weeks later and found that it was up for maybe 2 days before being knocked down by cows and I had thousands of pictures of a tree branch blowing. so i decided to look for another spot to put my camera. I ended up finding a game and fish tank a couple miles away from this one so i set up the camera there. I checked it today after it had been out there for a week. I couldnt be happier with what I got. these bucks got alot of growing to do but it looks promising and one already looks pretty good.

Thanks for the reply's. Pine donkey you make a good point. I never even thought about that as far as a treasure map for camera thieves. Hopefully we will be able to see these bucks grow on camera until the season starts. It's amazing how the one is already a small four point but there are a couple other ones that are already almost outside the ears and all they have is the base, they still have so much left to grow(at least I hope they do). By the way these are all mulies. No coues in this unit.

question about august archery in the desert
kennyazman replied to kennyazman's topic in Mule Deer Hunting
Ok so I put up my camera in a new spot that looked promising. I left it out for a week before I went and checked it. I got my first pics of some bucks on camera!! this spot looks very good. I am going to attempt to load the pictures in the trail cam forum. check them out once I put them up. -
I have a couple of water tanks that I plan on setting up my ground blind coming up this august. I normally will sit there in the evenings and wait until dark hoping to catch a buck coming into water. My question to you desert mule deer hunters is do you have much action on the water tanks during the rest of the day when it is 100+ outside. to me it just didnt make any sense to sit there during those nasty august days in the desert but I wonder if im missing opportunities at some deer coming in. what do you guys think? what times of day do you see the most action at water during the summer months in the desert.

Looks like it's finally going to happen - first Kaibab hunt
kennyazman replied to Coach's topic in Mule Deer Hunting
Congrats on the tag!! either way you will have the hunt of a lifetime. I am still crossing my fingers that I may still have a chance to get my 12aw tag this year but I'm losing hope. Good luck. let us know which one it ends up being. -
Is it just me or has the action slowed down quite a bit? I sure hope they arnt done yet. I wouldn't think so compared to the elk draw they have lots more tags to hand out and it took a few days to get through those. I'm still hoping!

Deer Draw: What was everyone's first and second choice?
kennyazman replied to reganranch's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Well maybe that is good news for me. 12AW late hunt first choice and 12AE second choice for me. I'm hoping those new December muley hunts take away some of the first and second applicants from these hunts. Good luck everyone on the draw. -
question about august archery in the desert
kennyazman replied to kennyazman's topic in Mule Deer Hunting
I appreciate all the advice. TJ I am definately going to take your advice and bring an ice chest in my blind. I plan on sitting in front of this water all day. I just hope I can stay patient enough. August is coming fast! Now I just need to find out that I got drawn for late kaibab and my plans for august go out the window. But that would be ok with me. -

question about august archery in the desert
kennyazman replied to kennyazman's topic in Mule Deer Hunting
Well I ended up taking your guys' advice and I set up a camera on a cattle trough in an area that has very little water. I have learned my first lesson already after having it out for two weeks. I found this tank last year while archery hunting in there and I know it always has water so I thought it would be good since it was also off any beaten path or rd. This particular area has almost all creosil bushes and small shrubs and cactus, not really much to strap a camera to. So I looked around and found a good sized root stump and put it at the base of a creosil and strapped the camera to it. Well when I went to check on it this morning I was so excited to see if I got anything. As I walked up to it my heart sank when I saw it knocked over sitting in a puddle of dry cow pee and turned toward the tree. I had over 3000 pictures on there. It was set up for 2 days and took a ton of cow pictures before it was knocked over by a cow and the next 12 days were creosil branches blowing in the wind. Now I know not to set it on the ground where there is cattle. As a side note I found an even better game and fish trick tank a few miles from there and there are no signs of cattle there. Hopefully I will have better luck there. -
I really like them. They fly just like my field points and they do a number on those critters. I have killed a deer and an antelope with them. they leave quite a hole.
-
I'm praying for a 12AW late tag. but since that most likely won't happen, I would really love a velvet muley this august with my bow.

whats your effective range?
kennyazman replied to soccerstar2013's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
I shoot a Mathews Switchback XT. 70 #'s 28 in draw TruGlo sight. When I got drawn for archery antelope last year I practiced like crazy and got comfortable out to 100 yards. I ended punching one in the lungs from 60. However since I'm not preparing as much for the archery deer hunts cause I try to get closer I would say 80 yards is pushing it for me. The deer you see in my avatar was my first archery kill and i got him at 70 yards -
Makes me wish I had a tag! Nice spot you got there

Got mine in the mail this morning. I couldnt get much work done today while I was reading all those awesome stories. Great job Craig. thanks for putting this together!
