Deer will move right back into an area relatively soon after it burns. Especially if there is some rain to get some new growth started. Plus, a lot of times a fire will skip over the top of draws and canyons, burning the ridge tops, but leaving good cover in bottoms. Deer love those areas.

Lab finds New Mexico deer died of CWD SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) -- A sickly mule deer that died in southern New Mexico last month was infected with chronic wasting disease, bringing to 12 the total number of cases reported in the state since 2002, according to New Mexico game officials. The New Mexico Game and Fish Department is concerned about the most recent mule deer death because it was in the Sacramento Mountains, about 50 miles southwest of where the first 11 cases were discovered, said spokesman Dan Williams. "When the disease first showed up, it was in area near the White Sands Missile Range. It was fairly well confined to that area," he said. "The other nearest cases were way up in Colorado." The disease has affected deer and elk in eight states and two Canadian provinces. But, in New Mexico, no cases have been found in elk. Chronic wasting disease causes animals to become emaciated, display abnormal behavior, lose control of bodily functions and die. "It's a disease that's similar to mad cow disease," Williams said. "Where these animals got the disease, we're just not sure." Residents of the mountain community of Timberon reported to game officers that they saw an old doe in very poor health. The deer died before officers found it in early June. Tissue samples from the animal's brain stem were sent to a laboratory at Colorado State University. Positive test results were reported to the Game and Fish Department by phone on June 29. Williams said the state is awaiting a written report confirming the animal's condition, but is already warning hunters to take precautions when hunting big game. The season runs from September through November.

Deer,Predators,and Drought
DesertBull replied to Manamal's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
That's what I was thinking too. In the general public's mind, lion's and hunters are both predators. I am not really sure what the G&F could do about lions even if they wanted too, with the current budget situation. Issue a bounty? Take off the bag limits? Legalize night hunting? Do any of those things and there will be a PR nightmare to fight. Maybe one thing that could help is if the various clubs and groups shifted budget $$ from water projects into predator control? -

Have you ever used "Point Blank" software? It's free and you can put in all kinds of different data, including elevation, and get "theoretical" perfomance data. Point Blank -
Deer,Predators,and Drought

Looks like a fire forced the release of all of the deer being studied. "A third fire, 1,000 acres in size, the Four Peaks Fire, is burning on the west flank of Four Peaks in the Mesa Ranger District. Due to the imminent threat to a large wildlife study enclosure, firefighters opened the fence around the area to free the enclosed deer. The fire does not pose a threat to any dwellings or businesses." http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/tonto/news/062305b.shtml -
I heard through the grapevine that the G&F have not even opened all of the envelopes yet. I would not worry about it.

To make it worse, some butthead killed a Vulture. What a moron.

I have found that using mapping software with my GPS is very helpful. I can look at all the AZ maps, pick an isolated spring, guzzler, or tank, and download the coordinates directly into the GPS. THe National Geographic and the Delorme maps seem very accurate and include roads and some features that the topos don't have. Plus, I can print out a section of the map to take with me instead of the whole topo.

The big recent burn in 22 looks great also as does the unit 23, Coon Creek burn from 4-5 years ago. Haven't seen the burn on Mt Lemmon yet this year, but that place is gonna kick out some big ol' bucks in the next few years.

I bought a cheap Walmart battery, so maybe that was the problem. -

I have the same one. I bought it off Ebay. I just put it out, so we'll see what it gets. The only thing I don't like about it is the lantern battery. It goes through them pretty fast. I set it up in the backyard, just to see how long the battery would last. It only lasted about 12 days. It does take decent pics though. It has 16M of internal memory, but you'll want to get a memory card for it. If you use the internal memory, you'll have to take it back to the house to get the pics uploaded. I got 128M card for mine it says it will hold about 200 pics. -
Get a job! LOL! Just kidding.

I uploaded it to my website and then just copy/ paste the url into the message. Also, your ISP probably provides you with some server space that you can use. Most do. I use Cox internet and they give me 10 megs of disk space to upload files to. If you call your isp or check their online support to see how to upload files. -
I too missed my biggest buck when I almost stepped on him. It was about 5 years ago down in the Rincons in unit 33.

I carry a Canon Optura 20 digital 16X zoom with 1.5x extender. I am working on a way to mount it atop my tripod / binocs so that I can just hit the record buttom when I glass up something worth filming.
