This brings up a sore subject with me. Why do we have to have the same dates, the hunts, the same units every freaking year? Why can't the G&F mix up the hunt dates like the Archery deer hunts or hunt units like the late ML'er Elk hunts in 6a? The rifle hunts always start the last weekend of October, the late hunts always start the second week of December, The late ML'er deer hunts are always in unit 35 and the 40's. Why are there no early archery hunts in unit 37B, yet they issue 100's of rifle tags. Everytime they ask for comments I ask them to give us a little variety. Yet no response. Anyway, back to the subject. I would take a late season Kaibab tag once then a unit 33, last week of December rifle tag for Coues.

If you think it is bad now, just wait. It is only a matter of time before the state raids the Heritage fund and other G&F revenues. I heard they are trying to grab the money that G&F raises off boat registrations now.

There is not much difference between the elk living near Picacho Peak and the elk I have seen in some of the areas in Unit 21. I've seen Elk between the Dugas Ranch and I-17, which is pure cactus desert. If you look hard enough, you can find a lot of Elk sign in the 4 Peaks area and around Mt Ord too.

I would rather hunt average animals every other year than trophy animals every 10-15 years. But that's just me. I understand that everyone has their own opinion.

Does anyone know what the G&F's plans are for next year, assuming that the law is passed? Go back to old system or compromise and set aside a percentage for NR's? I think the old system was more than fair, everyones name in the same hat and cap the NR tags. I would not be against raising the cap though to say, 12-15%.

If your 1st choice hunt is traditionally a 40% draw and your second choice is say, 10%. You will NEVER draw your second choice hunt. If the 40% hunt is full, there is a 99.9999999999% chance that the 10% is also full. But, if you put the 10% hunt first, and it is full when your name is drawn, there is still a 30% chance that your second choice (40%) hunt has tags left. 40%-10%=30%. If the 40% hunt is the hunt you really want, then that's fine, go ahead and put it first, but you need to pick a hunt with a better than 40% draw rate for your second choice or you're just throwing it away. There are execptions, of coarse, but on average that's how it works.

Yep, you need to reverse your hunt choices and put 21 as the 1st choice. You should always put the lower odds hunt as your first choice or you are just wasting your second choice. It's a statistical thang.

The .270 WSM is plenty of gun for elk and might be the ultimate "lope gun.

They cut the December tags in half. It's a shame too. 300 October hunters having to share the unit with the Mule Deer hunters over the same 4 days, while cutting back on a really good hunt in December.

I believe the only reason that Reid and McCain support the bill is because they can use it to combat the Pro-Gun crowd during elections. They can now claim they support hunting and only want to ban the "bad guns." Reid is leading the fight to keep conservative judges from being approved. Some have been waiting for 4 years! McCain, well, he's just a liberal trapped in a convservative state.

Todays Lasik is much much improved over even just a few years ago. The cuts are made more precisely and it's all controlled by computer.

Well, Roosevelt is 3x as big as it was last year, so it will probably take a little longer to warm up than usual. Plus, a lot of cold mountain water is still pouring into the Salt arm of the lake.

For what it is worth, I was one of the few that did not like the idea of adding October hunts to units 6A and 23.

Actually, I think the idea was to to take some December tags away, but add more October tags because the success rate would be much lower, giving more people the chance to hunt but killing the same numer of deer, more or less.

Remember about a month ago when they were asking for input on increasing the Coues deer tags in units 23 and 6A? Most all of you were in favor of adding the October hunts to these units. That's probably 400-500 tags right there alone. Elk are increasing by leaps and bounds. I have no problem adding more tags. I would not be surprised if those tag numbers that were quoted at the top of this thread include a big increase in the limited Opp. hunts. I doubt if you see a big increase in bull tags in units like 1,27,9 & 10. Antelope? That is puzzling that that they would increase those tags. Hopefully it is mostly the lower success rate archery tags that are increased.
