Not cheap but look at the Mystery Ranch Metcalf. It comes in a small and is highly compressible for day hunting but can expand and carry a lot weight.

To me its the time invested and the pictures that are more valuable than the camera. As far as the Forest Service.......screw them guys. I've never seen one of them on the outside of their green trucks unless its at the restaurant. -
