  1. Tommy,

I think it's just still a little early for the crappie.  Usually picks up shortly after mid-April.  The real question is what was the water temp?  We have only had a few hot days around here, I think the water is still cold.

I am hoping to go out to San Carlos Lake in the next couple weeks.  If I have any luck, I will let you know.

Also, I have heard from some people that have fished SC this spring, that the bite has been terrible in the morning and much better after 4 pm.

Well, Roosevelt is 3x as big as it was last year, so it will probably take a little longer to warm up than usual. Plus, a lot of cold mountain water is still pouring into the Salt arm of the lake.

  2. Remember about a month ago when they were asking for input on increasing the Coues deer tags in units 23 and 6A? Most all of you were in favor of adding the October hunts to these units. That's probably 400-500 tags right there alone.

Elk are increasing by leaps and bounds. I have no problem adding more tags. I would not be surprised if those tag numbers that were quoted at the top of this thread include a big increase in the limited Opp. hunts. I doubt if you see a big increase in bull tags in units like 1,27,9 & 10.

Antelope? That is puzzling that that they would increase those tags. Hopefully it is mostly the lower success rate archery tags that are increased.

Mexican Military on Standby in Response to Minutemen

Mexico's President Vicente Fox is preparing to respond militarily to a group of U.S volunteers who plan to patrol the U.S.-Mexican border starting tomorrow, positioning more than a thousand troops nearby, according to an Arizona TV station.

"The Mexican military is on standby," reports NBC's Tucson affiliate KVOA. "One unit has about a thousand soldiers. They're located just across the border."

Over the last week spokesmen for the border patrol volunteers, who dub themselves Minutemen, have said they will not attempt to detain Mexican illegals, but rather report them to the Border Patrol and track them till they're apprehended.

Despite the assurances, Mexican officials met with the mayor of Douglas, Ariz., on Tuesday to discuss how they will handle potential violence, KVOA said.

Last week President Fox warned at a Mexico City press conference:

"We totally reject the idea of these migrant-hunting groups. We will use the law, international law and even U.S. law to make sure these types of groups, which are a minority, will not have any opportunity to progress."

  4. That is a buch of crap! I used to use goolge as my search engine.

When I was shopping for my range finder I looked it up at Cabelas.com and then tried to look it up at Bass pro shops but I could not find it. I went to google and typed in redhead.com thinking honestly that was the address......BOY was I wrong!

    :P

And now redhead.com is your home page?

  5. No freaking way! The beauty of the central AZ units is that there are no Oct/November hunts.

Maybe if they only had one 4 day hunt and rotated it on a yearly basis through several different units, (22,23,24), it might not be so bad, but I would still be reluctant. Deer numbers are near all time lows and they want to add more hunts?

  6. If ya would a kept your spike in ya pants, ya wouldn't be in that there perdicament.

One good thang about the crumbsnatchers though is in about 10 years ya can use em to fetch all yer gear and goat haul it up the mountain.

Congrats on the deer and the baby!

  7. Wetmule,

Thanks for the info. I did not intend to infer that more money should be spent in WT habitat, I was pointing out that lions are a problem in many areas. I am 100% behind the efforts to preserve the Strip deer and gene pool and realize that funds must be spent where they have the most impact.

One other question. Does Mr. Bedlion get a special permit from the G&F to kill all these cats in one year or does he have to take a valid tag holder on each hunt? Just curious.

I'm not much of a public speaker ( I always skipped that day of class!) Plus, there is no way I could make a midweek meeting at 6:30.

If someone wants to run with the raffle idea, please do. I'll be sure to buy some tickets if it gets rolling.

  8. I have good success getting trail cam pictures over salt blocks. I like the salt / mineral blocks you get at the feed store. I would not overpay for the ones marketed for hunters.

I got this tip from another guy and works real well for getting a lick started. Get 3-4 of the small mineral blocks, they're about $2 each. Crush up 2 of them and drill a hole in the one or two of the others. Take a small hand trowel or shovel with you to the trail. Dig a shallow, wide hole at the bottom of a tree, where you want to place the lick. Take one of the crushed blocks and pour it in the hole, mix it up real good with some of the dirt. Take the other block with the hole in it and rope or wire it tight to the side of the tree.

For what ever reason, the deer like the salt mixed up with the dirt. They will paw that hole all summer long. By placing the other block on the tree, it will seep salty water right down the tree trunk into your salt lick every time it rains and freshen it up.

To jump start the lick, try pouring some dark molsassas, anise, or vanilla extract on the tree trunk and around the lick when you first set it up.

I'll be setting mine out after the hunting season are done. I need to fix them up a little too. Mine are all home made and need repairs after six months in the rain/wind/snow/

  9. I have a permanent scope hickey right between my eyes too. A moon shaped scar from a 7 mag.

That's funny because I was just watching a show the other day and some caribou hunter shot at a bull and the scope wacked him good. They showed the bull falling and you could hear the guide in the backgroud start laughing really loud. I thought, that's kind of weird, but when they pulled the camera back the old fat guy had blood all over his face and the guide was rolling on the ground in a full belly laugh.

    Great buck by the way.
