I did some scouting down there and ran into a bunch of hunters. I was going to go down there as my second spot, but ended up getting this little guy first. I think I will take my buddy down there and give it a try. The country looks really good. It is just a little too warm down there right now.

The population surveys are not determined in one day or one week of flying in the unit. WM's usually have a good idea of how many deer are in their unit. They then fly the unit and tell the pilot where to go to try and get accurate numbers. They tend to pick the spots where they have seen deer in the past or during the year from the ground. WM's also suggest the number of tags they think the unit should have. This is not always heard by the supervisor making the decision. Although the surveys can be a good tool to use for determining the number of deer in a unit, the best way is to go out to the unit and find them yourself. Hopefully the number of tags issued and the number of deer in the unit are a good enough ratio to properly manage the population.

Nice bull! I love the mass on him. Smoke stick hunting is the best way to hunt IMO. Scott

Unfortunately I did not get drawn in Arizona this year. I grew up in Arizona and moved out to San Diego a few years back. I have been lucky to get drawn in Arizona until now. I bought a D16 mule deer tag over the counter here and was wondering if anyone was familiar with the area? Where to hunt? Size of deer out here? Anything will help. Thanks.

Good first coues! I really like the height on him. Thanks for posting.

Tough luck! Hopefully he is ok for the next hunter.

Very well said .308Nut. People always forget about wind drift and that is a bear to deal with. That is why I always choose the heavier bullet. I really like the 150gr but thats just my opinion. +1 I shoot a 150gr winchester supreme elite out of my 270. I shot my coues last year at 457yd no problem. The heavier bullet definitely helps with the wind!

Whats In A Name

Well, I live in San Diego and I am one of the few hunters here. I was born and raised in AZ and will always go back to hunt. 11 is my favorite number, so SDHunter11. -
ibowhuntaz, Thanks for the jesseshunting advice, I found some good information there. I guess I will just have to go out and get some extra scouting in. Hopefully I will be hunting in AZ next year and will not have to deal with california hunting! Thanks for the replies. P.S. Sundevil, there are no hunting sites in CA, especially southern CA. I bought my tag over the counter and they don't even sell those out! Go CATS!

mulie hunter, I had this hunt last year across I19 in 34A and took a fairly nice 3X3 (86 3/4) buck. The weather was not too hot, but not cold enough. Light jacket in the morning and t-shirt by 10am. I have hunted 36A many times in the past. As usual, if you get out of the truck and walk, you will greatly increase your odds. I have noticed a lot of road hunters in that unit in the past few years. By November the deer have been pushed away from the raods and walking to a good vantage point off the road and glassing really helps. Good luck and hope this helped a little.
