I'm new the board, but the conversation and advice seems good so... I got drawn for the November 36B Coues hunt and am looking for any recommendations. Hunted there years ago with my grandfather and will be agin this year. Maybe his last (hope not). Last time down we took Tres Bellotas road south of Arivaca and then a FS road east a couple of miles. Not sure how good the area is as I was not much of a hunter at the time (noisy kid). Any suggestions?

Doesn't look like I'm goingt o get anymore scouting in before the Nov hunt. I'll be down a few days early and fit some in then. Hopefully all the October hunters can offer some insight after they've filled their tag

one month to go. good luck to anyone with October hunt. Memories of past hunts start creaping into my mind at all times of day. Looking at old maps and ground walked. Start wondering how much it will be the same yet how different and exciting each hunt is.

The rings fit fine for me Where in Cali do you hunt. I've got a buddy works up north. I grew up in So Cal, but never hunted out there.

The Tikka is a sweet shooting gun and I like the burris scope. I got the scope on a deal that included a spotting scope. The scope isn't as good in low light as my Leica or Swaro, but I like the reticle. I have no complaints on the rifle. It seems to like any ammo I've put through it. It is light and shoulders nice for me. I really like the integrated base and the fact that it comes with rings makes it a great bargain. I've been told that the barrels are mfg on the same line as the Sakos. They just pull it off and it either goes on a SAKO or a Tikka. Not sure if this is true, but the accuracy lends credibility to this notion. Hope your son enjoys it. What and where are you hunting this year? sczoner

couesdiehard, We didn't get very far off of Ruby Rd on our trip, but in ways I like the idea that the road doesn't go too far back. I like the country on that side. Seems to be good variation from Oaks and such to Ocotillo depending on where you go.

Got it. Saw deer in the second area you mentioned when we were down there earlier this month.

couesdiehard, I got it and sent you one. Want to make sure you got it.

I'll be using a Tikka T3 synthetic in .270 this on coues hunt. Shoots far better than I do. I've been practicing with the BurrisPlex reticle and so far the trajectories line up with 130 grain silvertips out to 400yds.

I drive a red S-10 4 door Blazer and my hunting partners will have a red 98 Dodge club cab and a Brown Dakota Crew Cab with a matching shell. My buddy should be down there the week before the hunt. We're hoping to get down there at least a couple more times before hand. Whether we have any deer hanging or not there'll be cold beer and my dad always stays in camp so feel free to drop by.

It is amazing what animals, and people for that matter, can do. I have seen several deer run after having both of their shoulders broke. I think sinew, muscle and adrenalin keep them moving for a period

Thanks for the input. Drove Tres Bellotas rd to our old site this weekend. It was covered in garbage FS RD 4166. The entire thing was littered with empty water bottles etc. It has never been this bad in the past. We did some scouting in the area and did see some deer. Then went and toured Ruby Rd. I had never been on that side before. A bit of late morning glassing off the various spur roads into some of the canyons and we saw some more deer, but a virtually no litter so that helps decide were we'll be. This side seems to be recommended by Game and Fish as well as Dwayne Adams book. In response to DiamondBack AZ. I'll hunt any type of terrain, but my Grandfather doesn't get around as well as he used to so the idea of finding a spot and glassing is proabably favorable or doing some still hunting in the thick Oak. Hope to make another trip down in October. ajohunter, I'll email in the next couple of days. Mike
