    Caging Bobcats

I have to confess Josh's success actually got me motivated to get my cages out. He's been tearing it up. Bobcats that don't come in to the call now get harvested in cages while we sleeps. There are 2 different methods of killing the bobcat in a cage. You can shoot it with a small rimfire or use a catch pole and quickly choke it out. Bullets often get blood on the pelts so Josh and I opt to choke them out. Here is a video of me dispatching a good sized bobcat a few nights ago. Quite an adrenalin rush! File is in AVI format and pretty large. It's at night so video camera work is limited. http://www.hyperwrx.com/Hunting/1_11a.avi Some pictures of my cages and bobcats I have harvested in the last week. We are lucky to have one of the best cage builders in the United States. Take advantage of it.

    PREDATOR HUNTING USEING Hand CALLS

If you are going to purchase your hand call at a local sporting goods store you will only be looking at the popular brands. Some of these are quality call that are easy to blow. Cheapest out there is the Tally Ho by Tal Lockwood, an Arizona resident. Great little call and at %5 you can't go wrong. The verminator series of call are nice calls and not very expensive either. The Psycho Tweety and the plain tweety are good. I think they have 2-3 more models out now at Sportsman's Warehouse. Les Johnsons Ruggy Dog is nice but expensive but comes with a DVD showing you how to blow it properly. Any of the Sceery calls are good quality. You should be looking at getting an open reed type as they are generally the loudest and easiest to blow.

    good videos?

Nail 'em AZ Style is fantastic and all footage is based right here in our state. Mark Zepp's DVDs are great also. Les Johnson's Predator Quest DVDs are 2nd to none. I really dislike the same old cookie cutter DVDS out there. All the coyote stands look the same. Same old crap over and over. Gimme something different.

  15. James- everything within an hour gets its fair share of predator hunters. Going South to Maricopa you can start calling South of the 238 all the way to the 8 around Stanfield. North for an hour barely gets you out of the valley. East you can hit the area before and around Superior. West is limited also by your location. If you go down the 60 heading toward Gold Canyon the left is rifle and the right is shotgun only. Look for thickets of trees and washes as they will often hold the coyotes holding up for the day just outside the neighborhoods. Sneak in with your shotgun and call quietly and get ready for the action. Good luck.
  16. Call in a double and you're hosed. I had a TC Contender G2. Loved the rifle for the sole reason it helped me learn to take my time on my shots and proper bullet placement is key to a downed animal. Beyond that it was a problem. I call in doubles and triples at times and I can't pull the casing from the chamber and put in a new bullet fast enough to get more than 1 kill (unless some lucky circumstance occurs). Try getting a bullet out and loading a new one in with gloves. Good luck. I sold the firearm.

    Grey Fox Rodeo

Josh vs. half the gray fox population in AZ. Brutal display of predator hunting skill. The Minaska Big Country proving once again that simplicity in an electronic caller is the ticket to success. Way to go Josh.

    Good week of calling

The Minaska Big Country is one heck of a call. Josh above proved it can call em in 24-7.
  19. My take. As Josh said, it was a rodeo. Also used a Minaska Outdoors Big Country.

    A Coyote A Day

Minaska Outdoors Big Country scores again... and again... and again....
  21. Shooting video footage with Josh today. Also first day of the NPHA hunt. 6 stands and called in 5 fox and 1 bobcat. Not bad ratio. Too bad my shooting was less than optimal. Most days I am pretty good but some times I have a tough time. Stand 1- call in a fox double. Shoot first one and on second I try shooting through some really light brush with my .17 Fireball and miss high. We stay on stand another 5 minutes and I spot a cat 100ish yards away just sitting watching the caller. I get the camera man on it and touch my 2 lb trigger and MISS! Luckily the cat only takes a step or two. He now was standing behind a bush with only his back half sticking out. I sink a 20 gain Accupoint right in the middle of him and he jump, flops around and tumbles half way down a small hillside, then GETS UP AND RUNS OFF! He was hit solid but ended up making it into the thick wash bottom and even after 30 minutes of hunting we couldn't find him. What a bad break. Anyhow, here is the quick minimal edited footage of the stand. Josh can pick up foxes and cats with a video camera really well. He can predict movement as well as the best of them. Later on I called in another fox and shot it. Josh called in a fox double and they wouldn't come out from behind a row of bushes so I couldn't get video of them so he passed. For those who consider dedicating their predator pursuits to just fox and bobcats I highly recommend the Remington .17 Fireball. 4000 feet per second and a 20 grain Accutip bullet will enter a foxes body and leave no exit. A gray is only about 3-4 inches wide That bullet will enter, expand and make a slushie out of his insides and not even penetrate the other side. If you don't hit bone, you'll be hard pressed to find an entrance hole. The first fox I shot, was broadside and has no visible entrance and no exit. 2nd fox was straight on chest shot and bullet splashed a bit. Quarter sized entrance.

    5 fox and 1 bobcat

I am on Minaska Outdoors field staff and use one of their Big Country electronic callers. The gray foxes came into a few different gray fox distress sounds and the bobcat to a cottontail distress.
  24. September 9th at 7 PM. Arizona Predator Callers (Mesa, AZ) will feature Reed Peterson giving a seminar on how to call in bears with a hand call. Admission to this event is free to the public and the last 2 years there has been standing room only as everyone comes to hear him share his stories and tactics. He will do a question and answer session after wards where you can try to pick his brain on the best AZ locations to call. Location- Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #9 at 1450 East Main Street. The FOP Lodge is on the North side of Main Street between Stapley and Gilbert Road in Mesa, AZ. Questions- shoot me an email at scott@hyperwrx.com or post in this thread.
