I guess I am in the minority, too. Any Javelina that I have ever eaten has been just fine. It does not taste like pig like I have had some people tell me (ay least not the ones I've killed). It does make a big differnece whether the one you take is male or female, or at least I have heard that, Seems like I alwasys pick out the biggest one and it ends up being a female. Anyways, proper care of your game, cutting out the lower half of the leg at the joint (musk glands), constantly cleaning your knife or better yet using multiple knives, putting the carcass/meat on ice asap, and marinating the meat has always given me good results.

Whoops my bad, maybe I should look better before posting. If Amanda would delete this thread then that would be alright.

I agree. That is one heck of a write-up, one of the better ones I have ever read (though I do read a lot of good ones). Congratulations on your Coues of a lifetime, I believe ANYBODY who knows ANYTHING about Coues Deer would be ECSTATIC to take that buck. Out of curiosity, what rifle setup? Caliber? -
That WAS funny, but I saw it coming after the second Caribou appeared in his scope ( a nice Schmidt&Bender, btw.

For Sale or Trade- Savage Model 110 .243
couesobsession replied to BeardownAZ's topic in Classified Ads
Only newer models have the accu trigger. It was introuduced in 2003. -
I myself dont fully understand it. I guess the need for more does so they can produce as many fawns as possible becasue so many dont make it makes some sense. Just like you, I have seen many areas with a much higher doe to buck ratio then i would like to see, for my sake and the ecosystem's. The thing is there are a lot more bucks that you just arent seeing because they are much more elusive than does, so the buck to doe ratio isnt as disproportionate as you may think. There is one or two antlerless hunts, one being a antlerless tag (issued through the draw) for the Kaibab plateau.

I agree, what a BLAST to watch. But your comparison to wolves is REALLY screwed up! The wolves are native, the cows are exotic. The cows ought to be blasted like the hogs. Mark IMO wolves are native to Arizona but before they were intorduced they were trapped and shot out of existance in Arizona. This means that the ecosystem has adapted to their decades-long absence, as evidenced by the healthy, not overabundant, population of big game in these regions. Reintroducing an animal that mother nature has allready accounted for its absence is not a good idea, just look at Yellowstone. Again JMO, it is a heated topic and everybody has an opinion. Sorry for the thread hijack. More on topic I have occasionally seen them areound the Jacks Canyon area as someone elese posted. Hopefully hunters will do their part and kill every pig they are sure is wild on sight. Good for the ecosystem and my belly. Yum yum. Piggy.

Darnit BASS! I was going to post that one eventually it is one of my favorites. The sad thing is its too close to the truth when it comes to how I go about hunting .

"...one of the most consistent breeding females..." The holidays are here! Shoot. Shovel. Shut up.

+1 on that. they are making pretty much as good or better money than retail on most items its just that they are getting the money from more than one source.

VERY DISAPPOINTED AND RATHER DISGUSTED
couesobsession replied to Shooter McGavin's topic in The Campfire
Yum Yum AZ hunting addict. After eating tag soup on a very challenging and perplexing coues hunt in 32, the best I can hope for in terms of wild game is to cook up some rabbit, quail, or dove while looking at pictures of venison like the one you posted . If only I had the smell to connect the taste to. Maybe you should invite me over . -
Europeans trying to stop nighttime predator hunting in AZ
couesobsession replied to JMP's topic in Predator Hunting and Trapping
Seriously!!!? Night time predator hunting is going to pose a risk to Mexican Grey Wolves? These peole really dont get that if it weren't for hunters the eco-system would be a helluva lot more jacked up than it is right now. We control populations, contribute the OVERWHELMING majority of funds to conservation in the first place (as said around 99%), create healthier heards (you think if it werent for hunters CWD would have been detected or tryed to be controlled in the first place?), and are good stewards of the land. These people need to do some ACTUAL research. If you cant come up with a valid reason for objecting to something just come out and say why you are doing it. Sorry for the rant, these things get me all worked up. Someone should start a rerverse petition. -
Good practice round for .243 for kids?
couesobsession replied to Airbusdriver's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
As reguards to recoil, there shouldnt be a huge difference. Then again, to a kid, what a slight difference in recoil feels like to us to them can be monumental. But inside the .243 caliber, the kick shouldnt be much of a problem. I like to use Hornady 95 grain SST superformance when I take my .243 deer hunting. It actually shoots that hot load extraordianrily well, and the SST is great on deer. For cheap shooting, or heck, even hunting, Remington Core-Lokts are the old stan-by for millions of hunters. -
Great looking buck! Interesting story, and a very well executed shot. Thanks for sharing and congratulations on getting it done.

Well it seams like the hunting community is split five ways to Sunday reguarding this matter. Should we use the word "harvest"? Some say that calling it that is disrespectful to the animal, you are taking its life, so you should at least give it the respect it deserves by calling it what it is: you are KILLING that animal, leave the word "Harvest" for crops. Some say who cares what you call it, actions are what count. And still others say the use of the word "Harvest" is fine, its use helps make hunting more palletable to the anti-hunting community. You really cant watch many hunting shows before you hear that word used a dozen times: "We harvested this (insert animal here)". I figure it does us as hunters a great deal of good to discuss such matters realted to our sport. Soe co I just want to say, this thread is in no way inteneded to offend anyone on this forum. No matter the word you use, we are all linked to one another through hunting. Everyone has their own opinion of wrong and right, so let's share ours respectfully.

Yeah, it was a bit annoying. Still had a good time with the family and the snow on the peaks of the Galiuros was amazing. I should post pics. I hope that for your sake the bucks are acting frickin' suicidal. Odd thing was that with those does we ddint see a single spike or forky. I did see one hunter with a small spike on his quad, had the game warden check us and he told us of another someone killing a forky opening day, all these in the same area. I'm guessing these easy to locate deer did have some bucks with em', but the lucky guys who found them first killed em. oh well, good for them.

Nice shot! Definately longer than I would try, but if you have the skill, you have it. You can tell how far it was by the way that mulie started to jump the string, but that didnt help him much!

Was up there this past Thursday until today. Hunted Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and a quick morning hunt today. Long story short no buck. That horrendous wind storm Friday night really screwed us over for the saturday hunt, our stuff was spread all over the mountainside. Thankfully we werent the poor schmucks camped down in the valley where the wind was channeled like water through a flume, they had to leave in the middle of the night. Awoke on saturday with snow down to around 4.5K early in the morning. Finally found where the deer had moved this morning and in two hours spotted 15 deer, all slicks. Unit 32 wasnt showing us any love.

Well put. I just wish that that was the reason that so many people (esp. those on TV) use the word. Some people may do it to specify they will be using the animal they killed, but many, many people out there are adopting it as a politically correct form of killing their animal.
-
Quite frankly I just started the thread as a conversation piece, to see how many people would chime in!!!! Many valid points have been raised. Despite the fact it seems I'm in the minority, I think I agree that too much sugar-coating is being used in today's society, and that Harvest is just the politically correct form of what people are doing (yes it is being shoved down our throats). For example, do you think that in the 1800's that a young man would bring home a buck and shout to his dad "Pa, I HARVESTED a deer!!!" Nope. He'd gleefully tell all who would listen that he "killed" a buck, an action what would benefit his family. Sure, some definitions of the wortd include the killing, or take, of animals, but that is only because those definitions were REVISED (granted, many definitions are, but not always to make something more politically correct). Maybe some just see it as a pointless topic, but many things are changing as subtly as this, sometimes not for the better. A penny for you thoughts.

Then you better not start turning over rocks near your camp at night and shining a blacklight on the ground, you'll quickly discover dozens in just a few hundred yards of gorund!!! Kinda cool how they grow a very noticable green color.

Unit 33 Monster Buck
couesobsession replied to AzHuntingAddict's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
You should feel happy! You got your first buck! Heck, my first elk was a cow a little under 200 lbs, practically an overgrown calf, and to me it was the biggest elk in the entire world. Nice shooting . -
Just look at that first buck! He is a TOAD! I would say he would make 100" and then some. From what I can see he has good spread, amazing length, and good mass.
