  1. Just got back Monday night from unit 27 Mule Deer scouting trip and took my youngest son along Xavier and good hunting buddy Don we had a blast to say the least .It all started Friday evening my Good hunting buddy from Tucson met me at my house in AJ and we set off to Egar to meet up with an other great hunting buddy Tony at his house .This is are home base when we draw any tags in unit 1 and 27 .So we rolled in late that night had a few laughs and crashed for the night my son little X and I woke up to the great smell of home tortillas and flap jacks you see Tony's wife is second to none in the kitchen and will spoil all of us by over feeding us with great food and drink whether you want to eat or not .after breakfast we made a game plan to find a great camping spot in 27 and pick up his son who was staying the night at a friends house .We picked up the both boys and took them along with us to look for Deer and do a little side hunting of Albert squrirrels .We always bring young ones along when we can and this trip was no exception plus this was my sons first Albert's hunting trip.So we finally got on the road stuffed to the gills with good food and plenty of ammunition of fresh beans (this would soon be a mistake with 6 people in a quad cab truck and having a gas ) it was not long before the windows started going down every 20 min or so and then roaring laughter from the person letting those air biscuits go.We soon started seeing lots of elk and turkeys and the occasional Albert's barking in the trees .We didn't want to spook any deer at first so we opted to pass on them for now until we could spot some mulies first .This was driving my four year old crazy because I had promised him we would be shooting these Albert's and he could not wait to harvest more as the last scouting trip I brought squirrels home and he thought it was the best fried chicken he had ever tasted ( now he knows they were squirrels). We did manage to spot lots of does and the occasional spike but nothing of any size and soon it was better to start chasing Albert's then being in the truck getting gassed out so Tony's son and and his friend were hammering squirrels while my son for the first time bird dogged for them and picked them up after holding a huge squirrel for the first time he was hooked and I think spotted the most Albert's all 3 days he could not wait to pick them up needless to say we limited every day and had great fun teaching the kids how to clean your game and care for the meat lots of Gross fun there! All in all it was a great time truck loaded with lots of munchies snacks and drink jokes at every corner and lots of young eyes to help us spot those Deer!

    An Ethical Hunting Dilemma

I would cap the one on top he is useless as nips on a bull.At least the the second Buck is still chasing the right tail and will benefit the herd besides can you imagine if the word got out to the other Deer that a turd burglar snuck up on him and had his way I would save him the embarrassment

State land access closed in 36b

I can tell you most of the birds that are still are alive in that area are not even living in the buenos Aries area I have found them as far North as King Anvil ranch next to three points and way down south by Pena Blanca Lake .I have even spotted tagged Antelope roaming at three points! The other joke is they have there own coyote season on the refuge area and will ticket you if you kill one of the coyotes out of season the whole refuge laws are to say the least dumb and they seem to listen more to complaints about hunters .They fall on deaf ears if a Hunters complains to them .It would be something if Hunters got together and really made our voice heard!I'm with you guys on there deliberately trying to waist tax payers money and mismanage the refuge

It has been a few years since I went to bog hole but the last time I was there it was all dried up and the following years some friends said it still had very little water best bet it to google map that area before you take the time and gas to get there

I can remember taking my quail hunting partner and his dog Buddy down south for the first time not knowing if we would come across any mearns and his yellow lab Buddy was simply amazing he put us right on them even caught a live one and put it in my hand scared me to death it flew of and that lab was so mad he refused to hunt next to me for the rest of the day ( you could almost hear him say jerk I was worked hard for that bird and you let him go LOL)

Elk and response to human scent?

There is no question elk use there nose as there first line of defense.Even with all the sent masking products out there an elks nose is 100 times better than a dogs and a monster bull has learned once he winds you to high tail it.I have played the wind to my favor while scouting for elk for a friend and have been with in 10 feet of a mature bull he had no idea I was there he knows his eyes can deceive him some times but his nose never does once the wind changed even with sent shield clothes, masking spray and even rubbing an elk sent gland on me ( that we got from a hunting buddy's elk the day before) . He knew something was off and he bolted with out even seeing me and I couldn't believe even with his ears moving in all directions and his huge neck moving to see every corner of the woods I was hiding in , it was his nose that he trusted! He would sent that air every other step very cool indeed .Some times I found its better to let your friends think what they want and let them learn the hard way when you let them win the heated discussion and do it your way and have an elk hagging in camp and he does not that will be the I told you so moment and then you still have a friend that maybe will listen to and your knowledge in the woods.

    Rabbit???

There is nothing better than my Moms Recipe cotton tail in hatch red chile! Growing up in Deming Nm I was spoiled to have hatch red chile at my disposal and there are tousands of cotton tails in NM Plus my cousins and I would harvest cotton tails all day making sure we cleaned them as soon as we harvested them thats key after that we put them in a cool and dry ice chest till we got home.soaked them in salt water over night to get remaining blood out. My Mom would step in and coat 2 whole rabbits in olive oil lightly pepper and garlic salt them (to keep them moist) add cubed and peeled potatoes ,one bay leaf ,2table spoons of oregano ,pinch of pepper and salt put in crock pot for 3 to 4 hours on low till meat begins to come off the bone once this happens take out of crock pot and begin deboneing the rabbit now you are ready for cooking the red chile 12 to 16 dryed hatch red chile remove stem and insert knife into chile pod and remove chile seeds this will make the chile not as hot just good flavor rinse chile and place in boiling water for 15 to 20 min ( at this point chile will be thick like bell pepper) take off heat set aside for 10 min to cool off remove chile and about 1/3 cup of the water that was used in the bioling .Place chile and water in blender and blend till smooth consistancy (strain to remove skin pices that won't blend and have a smooth chile sauce) lightly oil frying pan add 2 table spoons of flower and toast flower till it is light brown then add red chile and cook till red chile starts to boil add the potatoes and rabbit to the chile and bring to low heat let stand for 10 to 15 min. serve with fresh refried beans and spanish rice and home made tortillas folks theres nothing finer in the world .(I always look forward going home for the holidays and doing some rabbit hunting with the family back home in my mind while hunting I can already taste that red chile rabbit and tortillas

The more the better on 36B

Hey Benny I will be up there as well in 36B for that hunt my 10 year old didn't get drawn for his youth hunt so we picked up a left over tag for him , the late November hunt .Plus 3 of my closest hunting and fishing buddy's will be hunting and we always welcome an ethical responsible hunter in our camp if nothing more than a good time to hang around and joke at the camp fire.we will most likely be headed out thanksgiving evening and stay till the following Wednesday I believe .if you would like to chat about it send me a PM or any one else going on the late November CW unit 36b hunt .I believe there is always safety and fun in numbers as well

NEW MEXICO BURRO MOUNTAINS MULE DEER

My advice is use google maps to find some good water sources then find terrain that is at least a mile from any road that will have thick cover .havent hunted there in years but my cousins that do hunt there every time they get drawn pull out monsters .Were from Deming NM and they only put in for that area. They always use that pattern when they Hunt there because there are always lots of road hunters that don't bother to get out and really hunt seems after the first day or so they really push deer into thick bedding cover but deer always need water thats key . If it stays dry you should find that the deer in a habit to use the same water hole.Any ways hope that helps
