I own a 270 and 30-06. Ive used he 270 for deer/pig and the 30-06 for elk. just my preference but I prefer to go a little larger for elk.

I saw you northbound on Val Vista :-)

Joey - Welcome and good luck on your hunt. This site is not that way 99% of the time. Every now and then a heated subject comes up, which results in a lot of feelings being put out there (which is why this thread is so long). Stick around and you'll see this topic is the exception and not the rule for CWT

I have no antlers to show for my best so far but someday (soon hopefully) it shall happen.

I can be kinda crazy and Im glad I could give u something to laugh about. Just because I've held out on 2 bull hunts for a 300+ish (my goal isnt that far out there) and probably have passed or drew back on at least 20-30 bucks & bulls (maybe more I don't keep track) doesn't mean crap. I've eaten tag soup countless times but I'd rather take something I feel is right for me. Like I tell people I have a bit of experience hunting but not killing. To each their own unless a law is made which we all can probably do without.

I think your point is opinion is valid and one I actually agree with, but its just the way you present it. I'm at 4 years of hunting my butt off I would say 3-5 weeks of combined hunting trips per year and I have yet to tag a deer or elk despite all of this. I choose not to shoot young animals. This is my personal choice and what I feel is right for me BUT I know I'm in the minority. Maybe I will lower my personal standard to get one under my belt but this is.after a long time of some serious hunting. I seriously doubt I will do that but who knows.

I'm very sorry for your loss. My brother too was tragically taken from us at a young age. its been almost 17 years and although it does get some easier with time, the special days and anniversaries are always the hardest. Stay strong for your parents. He will never be forgotten. Your children will know him. they will know through your eyes and your heart. You will know when the age is right to answer the hard questions with your children. Until then age appropriate answers are all that is needed. The little ones really don't need any more info. Hang in there during this tough day.

im so sorry for your loss. my sister lost a dog suddenly and she had a dog autopsy done. we live in the valley but she took him to Tucson for it. I never knew it was even an option before she did it. I don't remember how much it cost though.

I still haven't heard the whole story but we relocated them to where tom got his bull and where we know cows consistently like to be. they ended up cow calling and had a herd answer. he had one come in and it was a nice 100 yard shot :0). It ended up being very close to the exact spot tom got his! lesson to be learned. When marking kill site on GPS also mark with bright colored marking tape. it turns out he didn't do the tape and the GPS messed up his way point location. when he returned, it took him an hour to find the elk :0) Bet that won't happen again...lol

A friend of my husband's is with his son on his youth hunt. hee is in 6a staying in munds. they aren't seeing anything. my husband is giving him info over phone but you know how it is...u can miss a spot by mere feet. is anybody up there who would have some updated info you can PM me? my father in law lives there but due to his stroke can't take them out or he would, and we are working this weekend. my husband was gonna go up tomorrow night but I guess they are leaving Monday after am hunt. thx so much!

as far as getting lost, it does happen and happened to me once. my teenage son and me were hunting by ourselves. luckily someone very nice helped us (not a ted bundy thank goodness). since then i always carry a gps and extra battery pack. I honestly can't believe the family's reaction. I'm guessing they did not realize the seriousness of it at all. they apparently are uneducated when it comes to the outdoors and manners.
