It was awesome to see that deer in person at Casey's. He looks much bigger in person and is an awesome buck. Man that dang Massey knows how to get it done with a bow in his hands. Awesome... Did you ever have any luck yourself? Later, Geoff

    First buck by bow!!!!!!!

Thanks for all the kind comments guys!!! What an awesome feeling to take my first coues with a bow. I have killed some good ones with a rifle but this one is special. I will be having him mounted but not sure who I will use yet, any suggestions??? Hey Josh my stand is still hanging in that sissy unit if you want to hunt it, na I'll pull it this week as there are no deer in that sissy unit. Later, Geoff

    bear

I killed my first bear on Friday in 6B. It was a small boar that is real dark down low and brown along the top of his back. I think I need to trade Andy screen names and change mine to "Little Bear" . I won't even bother posting pics as he is a little guy and I know the razing firstcoues got on his little lion so I won't even go there.HAHAHA. I really think I could use him for a dash mat on my Bronco. But hey I got my first bear and it was an awesome spot and stalk hunt and I would do it all over again. Now all the little bears are safe as I will never take another small one. Now I can concentrate on a very large coues deer that I need to run an arrow thru!! Later, geoff
  7. Doug, They said the alternative couse units were picked because of the quality potintal in thase units. We did talk about how 2 years ago when they tried the Nov. archery elk tags there was a strong out cry from archers that didn't want to see the tags taken from Sep. and put into Nov. but now they need to provide more oppertunity so they will try it with 25 tags in each unit and see how many apps they get on those hunts and will adjust it accordingly. 9. I was at the meeting in Flagstaff last night and there were alot of things talked about that should have all of us concerned. First off there were only 10 of us there!!!!!! All units except 1, 9, 10, 23 that currently have a Sept. archery bull hunt will now have a Nov. archery bull hunt consisting of 25 permits for the first year and then dependinng on 1st choice applicants for those Nov. hunts the permits will be adjusted accordingly to meet demand. I just can't imagine too many 1st choice apps for a Nov. archery bull hunt. All archery deer hunt units where the archery harvest totals more than 20% of the total harvest will go to draw hunts, units 7, 17A and 12A are just a few that are currenty over 20%. Dec. archery hunt to be removed from some units including 22. They want to make units 6A, 23, 30B, 31 & 36C the "Kaibab" coues hunts with higher buck to do ratios and more tags in the Dec. hunts up to 30% of the total harvest will be allocated with Dec. permits. With all other coues units in the state to receive NO MORE than up to 5% of all whitetail permits in Dec. Archery Javi hunts in the metro units may go to over the counter hunts. house Rock buffalo hunts to go to 365 day seasons. Fall and spring turkey hunts in some units to be offered to Jr's as over the counter hunts. Limited oppertunity elk hunts in select units to be offered as over the counter hunts. All elk units except 1, 9, 10 & 23 will be managed for a bull to cow ratio of 15 - 20 bulls per 100 cows thus allowing the department to offer more oppertunity with more tags and more hunters in the field killing more elk. They told us that the result from this will be a elk herd that has less older age class bulls and that the average size of bulls killed will drop, sounds like AZ is on the path to having a bunch of raghorns just like Colorado. The AZGFD is going to strech the resources as thin as they can and offer as much oppertunity as possible(TAGS) with hunts of lesser quality and in a few years it is going to show in the quality of animals taken. They informed us right off the bat that the main focal point of the department is now quantity NOT Quality except in the few units that will be managed as quality units. We were told once again that none of the changes have anything to do with $$$$$$$......BS!!!! It sounded to me like the days of AZ being one of the top trophy producing states in the nation are all but over, they are going to flood the hunts with as many tags possible to provide oppertunity for people to hunt not to make $$$$$. It seems to me that anybody concerned about oppertunity and quality would have been at the meeting last night but as I said there were only 10 of us there and with a turn out like that it pretty much allows the department to do whatever they want. All you archery deer hunters better get out there and enjoy it this year because next year if you want to archery hunt you may have to be drawn to do so. Later, Geoff

How to mount a set of elk sheds

Any of you guys know how to mount sheds to a repo or natural skull, I would like to mount the set of elk sheds I found a few weeks back to be able to display it as a european mount? I can get a bull skull that has the antlers cut off or I could buy one of the repos just wondering if anybody had some pointers to share. Thanks, Geoff

    More Deer Antlers

Those are awesome sheds, I knew that was the match to the one you found a few weeks ago as soon as Monty pulled into camp. Too bad those little critters chewed the burs off both sides all ready!! Nice to know there are still a couple of good bucks running around. Later, Geoff

    turkey birds

Thanks for the comments guys, I put 3 gobblers to bed on Thurs. night and we were back on them at 4:45am on Fri. they were gobbling like crazy when we parked the quads. We hiked in and set up the decoys and started calling. A hen started going like mad and the gobblers flew straight down to the hens and didn't want anything to do with us. We had toms gobbling all around us and after a few set up's and a few hours later we got 5 mature toms to come in gobbling it up!! It was a rush to say the least!!! AZSAGEBRUSH was on the video camera and as a couple of toms singled themselves out we let them have it. Thanks Monty for running the camera the video came out awesome!!! I have a couple other pics I will post. Later, Geoff

    Litle AZ elk sheds

Well guys this board has been a little slow the last few days. I have some pics of some sheds I found 2 weekends ago but I am a little slow and don't know how to post them. They are crappy pics I took with my phone but I would be happy to email them to someone so they could post them up. Later, Geoff

    Litle AZ elk sheds

Well that's all I have to share right now, but I have a ton of as they lay pics that are on film from this spring that I need to get developed so I will post some more later next week. Grong already chewed my butt and told me to get with the times and buy a digital camera so I guess I'll have to sell him some of these sheds and buy one. Anyhow that's it for now as I'm out of here in a few hours to go hunt some spring gobblers......and look for some more sheds! Later, Geoff

    AZGFD Hunt Recommendations

My posts on this subject are directed at the commission and not the wildlife managers as I feel they are in the same boat as us in it that the commission does what the commission want's to do. Thanks Jim for coming on and giving us the info you did and now we know why everything was not communicated to the general public and I understand we all make mistakes. Let's all do what we can to have our opinions and concerns heard at the April meeting. Sorry if I offended anybody with my previous couple of posts and I have given Amanda my apology. I just stand strong for what I believe in. Later, Geoff

    Flagstaff Public Comment meeting

I just spoke with a guy from the phoenix office and he informed me that tonight in Flagstaff is a open house to infom people of the direction that the dept. wants to go with these changes and answer any questions and that they will take public comment at this meeting. I guess it just depends on who you talk to as to what is going on. Anyhow you can always send you comments via email on the azgfd website. Later, Geoff
