Matthews Phillips' Lion
matthewp45 replied to AZ Ground Pounders's topic in AZ Ground Pounders Outfitters Blog
It is so sad to see someone kill an animal that is the most efficient killer of all the animals we love to see in AZ and because you don't see them everyday doesn't mean that the population is declining. It is far from that and like I said before those sheep, mule deer and coues deer that would have been eaten alive by this female or any one of her future kittens are thanking me tremendously. -
That is a gorgeous big buck man. I would be so proud of that thing. Somebody like Clay which there are very few can make an antelope look awesome. Mine isn't as big as yours but I think it turned out pretty good. He even put the little thing in his gallery. I use his gallery picture now to show people a picture of my antelope because he has some beautiful gallery pics.

Right now is prime time for lion hunting. If you haven't killed your lion yet, give these guys a call and go after your lion. You only live once and a tax return is great money to spend on hunting. Actually any money is great to spend on hunting. Seriously though you won't regret it. I still get all pumped talking about it. It was awesome to watch those dogs school that lion. Thanks for the nice comments about my lion hunt. -

I shot him with my real dad's 30-06 Springfield pump with a 1970's model Redfield wide view scope with a 180 Grain partition out of the last box of ammo he ever bought (He died from cystic fibrosis when I was 8 years old) It was very special for me to take such a magnificent animal with my dads favorite deer gun, pretty emotional. A hunt I will never forget. Especially when it is hanging on my wall when Clay gets done with it. -

These guys are the real deal. They are self made. They have 26 of the best dogs you will ever see. They are trailing a lion or looking for one to trail right now. They go lion hunting 6 days a week no matter if they have a client or not. From the second I met them I knew I had to try to get a lion with them. Over the last two years I have spent 12 days on horse back and walking all over with a great Houndsman we just couldn't get it done. The guy has great dogs just having a long streak of bad luck. So elk hunting this year I hunted with Cash and Steel and knew from the first day of hunting not only would I kill my lion with them but I would have two new friends to hunt with when ever I wanted. I signed up for my lion experience and I had to wait for two months because of work. While I was working for those two months it seemed like I would get a picture of another huge Tom with a guy holding it and Cash standing next to him about once a week or a video of them letting a female go, Torture. Then I packed up and prepared for a long 4 day adventure. It turned out 10 minutes after leaving the truck the dogs struck a track and we were in snow (which they hate hunting in snow but knew how bad I wanted a lion) the dogs were gone and they found the track and said it was a nice cat not the biggest but nice and they said we can pull the dogs and wait for a big Tom you have a lot of time and of course after previous adventures I just wanted to see one in a tree. So I said let them tree it and then we will see. 20 minutes later they had it treed. The cat jumped the tree as soon as it saw a human. They had it treed again in 200 yards and Cash and I snuck up to take a look and he looked at it and said its a pretty good cat but its a female, a big female, I asked him you don't shoot females right. He said not usually but we are in sheep country now and you like sheep a lot don't you and thats all he had to say, He started to say something and boom. I had my first beautiful lion. About a 100 yards away we found a coues deer doe she had killed the night before which I didn't like to see but there wouldn't be anymore like that from that lion or from kittens she would have had in the future and their Kittens. Turned out to be a beautiful cat and an awesome 1/2 day adventure (it doesn't happen that way very often no matter who you hunt with). That was a month and a half ago and I still talk to them 4 or 5 times a week about all the lions they are chasing and treeing and videoing with no client on some of them. If you want a great lion hunt with great people and unbelievable dogs, these guys are who you want to hunt with. -
I finally got an HS Precision 7MM Remington. I have the money put away for a nice scope but I can't figure which one would work the best. I want a nice easy to read and work Turret. Something in the 3-15X40 to 5-20X50 to put a Kenton Turret on it. I have been looking at the Zeiss Conquest HD5 3-15X42 Riflescope, Night Force NXS 3.5-15X50 Velocity 1000 Zero Stop and kind of thinking of the Huskemaw 5-20X50MM but I am really battling with the first two. I don't know if the Zeiss is to compact and may not adjust to my perfect eye relief when I throw up my gun. I can not stand it when I throw a rifle up and you have to move your head 5 inches forward to get the full field of view or the opposite. I just didn't know if the tube was long enough for adequate adjusting on a long action rifle. Any help or other ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

So in the nightforce they do not make any light weight scopes. That is one of my main factors. I have been looking at the Leupold Mark 4 Tacticle 6.5-20X50m but I only saw a mil dot reticle, what is the TMR? I am looking for a nice light weight scope with good easy to read good turrets and a reticle that will show you how much to hold for wind at different yardages and if you have no time to dial your turret you can use the reticle that has multiple cross hairs to shoot aut to 600 yard or shorter. Thanks again guys for some great info. anymore would be greatly appreciated.

I ended up with two Z5 Swarovski Rifle Scopes. The first one I received was to be put on my H.S. Precision. It was suppose to have the Ballistic Turret with the Colored dots that you can set custom to your rifle so if you turn the turret to the red dot it would be 400 yards. I wanted this scope so I could order an Outdoorsmans Ballistic Turret. So the first scope had know Ballistic turret but I thought I could send it to the outdoorsman and they could make their Turret work and come to find out they couldn't. I bought it from a place where it had to be returned within 10 days to get your money back but they assured me that the Outdoorsman could fix it up like I wanted it. I got busy and didn't hear from them so long story short 10 days were up. So the Z5 with the regular turrets and Duplex reticle has only been mounted to one rifle for 10 rounds to find a reload recipe. It is still in new shape with all the warranty papers and everything waiting as it comes brand new so the buyer can register it in their name to get the great warranty. Boxes have all the serial numbers and everything to get the registration completed. If you look really hard you may be able to see where the rings were when I put it on the one rifle but, it is faint and pretty much a brand new scope that still has the Grey Z5 sticker on the top of the Bell. The second Z5 I ordered out of desperation because my elk hunt was coming and I had just enough time to get it and get the Outdoorsman Turret system. So I got the 2nd Z5 with the Ballistic Turrets and got my Outdoorsman turret for it. I put it on my elk rifle and shot a maximum of 20 rounds through it. THis scope is just like the other except it really has no ring marks but a little tiny blemish on the top Turret from a screw driver. It has the same papers with everything you need to register it in your own name . I loved the scope which also came with a straight duplex reticle but I am wanting to try the Night Force 1,000 yard reticle. So I am selling both scopes that cost over $1,500 a piece and I like to sell things fast so I am goin to take it in the shorts but should have plenty of money for the Night Force so it will be fine. Here are pictures of the scope with the Ballistic Turrets. The other scope is exactly the same and in the same condition with all the papers and box. So they are Both New Swarovski Z5 Rifle Scopes Power is 3.5 - 18 X 44MM Both have Duplex Reticles One has regular Turrets and the other has Ballistic Turrets ll Here are some pics of the Z5 with the Ballistic Turrets. The other scope is in the same exact condition and has all the same papers and everything.

I filled my San Carlos Rez tag on the second day and I will never have to regret it. Out of the 7 Coues I have under my belt and 3 of those were 103",109"and 111" this is my favorite buck by far and it only scores 102 and change. See if you can tell why I like it so much. Thanks to my great buddies Tommy, Jesse and Christain. If it weren't for great team work I would not have filled my tag. I can't thank you guys enough. It meant a lot for you guys to be there and help get this guy. Thanks again and I hope I get to help you guys have a fun successful hunt someday soon. It would have been successful if we hadn't got this guy but it was a great bonus. Here's some Pics. It is 5" straight down. Deer had virtually no teeth. He may have had a year left. Thanks for looking.

You finally get to go hunting yourself and kill an awesome buck and have that happen. Man I wish that wouldn't have happened to you but hey it will make a cool memory to share with a lot of people. Congrats on a huge buck. I can't wait to get my buck to you so I can get it back sooner. What are your plans for mounting that one?

I think in his prime he had matching double droppers. You can see on the other main beam he has a little start to another dropper in the exact same place. Sorry I forgot to put the best picture on the antlers on my phone.
-
Thank you for there very nice comments. That is the first drop tine buck I have ever seen on the hoof. Last year I was telling Christain how much I wanted to kill a buck with a drop tine. Well I got one and now Clay is going to work his magic on the mount (Pedastol) and Tommy ( Tomgobbler ) the best wood worker I have ever seen is going to build the coolest base you have ever seen. I am going to be like a little kid waiting for Christmas for that buck to be sitting in my office room.

Thanks again boys and thank you Amanda for having a place to put these pictures where all the other Coues nuts can look at them.. Sorry for so many pic but I had to find the best one to show that drop tine.

It goes next to the fire place at the cabin in Springerville. We killed two turkeys 3 years ago on opening morning and we were trying to do a double turkey mount but it would have taken up half of the cabin. Best morning of turkey hunting I have ever had. TomGobbler and I were calling (Mostly Tommy, I guess they like the sound of a perfectly healthy hen, Tommy and a hen on it's death bed with 10 eggs stuck in its b*^t, Me) we stopped 5 times to call and had 4 gobblers going and called two into shotgun range and we were tagged out by 8:00am. Clay I could not be any happier my friend you do an amazing job and take a ton of my money but they are all worth every penny. Thank you very much for everything.

My uncle just got back from his San Carlos November hunt in unit D (not sure which side). It was his first Coues deer hunt and when they came upon this very unusually tall number 12 or a fork and a knife buck still in velvet he had to take it. He made a great shot and got a beautiful first Coues deer and I am sure there will be plenty more of them to go along with it. Congrats on a nice buck!

SD Backcountry Archery Buck (Kill Shot VIDEO!!!)
matthewp45 replied to ADDICT's topic in Mule Deer Hunting
WuTang in a muley video that is the best hunting video / sound track I have ever watched. It took a sport that some city kid may think is just for hillbillies and made it into a video that would interest any kid that likes to watch skate, snow board or any other type of extreme sport video. You keep spitting videos out like that and put them in the right places you could get some huge things done. Major props to you my friend. Keep them coming. Congrats on that trophy. In my opinion any spot and stalk muley or whitey is a trophy just as long as they are legal. -
Man what a freaking majestic monster of a bull. A Bull like that takes so much time and so much patience to kill. Only a few people can comprehend the magnitude of this accomplishment. A huge congrats to the hunter and all that were involved.

Casa Grande, Eloy and Marana have lots of hay now since the price of alfalfa has been at a record high for over a year now. The highest I ever saw alfalfa get was $185 a ton and for about 6-8 months they were getting $230-$250 a ton. That high of a price you can start making profit pretty quick so a ton of farmers all over the state put in alfalfa this last spring and a ton more will this fall because the cotton price fell from $1.10/lb to $0.68. Grain fields still standing or dished up are what you want to hunt. Unless they are letting the alfalfa go to seed -
I know a person can draw a tag the first year they put in. Last year I helped a nice young man at the age of 15 that got drawn on his second year putting in the draw. I was just saying if you have max points your odds go from AZ Lotto odds down to 1 in 6 or 7. Another one of my hunting buddies dad has been putting in for 46 years and has max points except they would not honor his hunter education certificate because it was before some date and they did not have any records of any of those classes. So he had been putting in for that long but did not have max points because the game and fish did not honor his certificate which was laminated with the governors signature and everything to make it totally legite. So this year I finally talked him into it and got him to understand what he was missing out on and he did the next course available and now has max points. So I guess my point is to have max points you must have your loyalty point and your hunters education point along with your accumulated points from not being drawn.
