Took the kids out to the desert and ran across this doe in a wash out in the middle of no where. I got the kids out to show them the deer and it starts wlaking toward us. It walks all the way up to me and I had the kids get behind me just in case it was agressive. It walked up and started licking my hand. I let the kids pet it and play around with it. It had no fear what so ever. My daughter became best friends with it in a second. My cousins boyfriend that was with us was eating some peanuts and tried to give some to the deer and it would not eat it. It was just browsing on some desert vegetation while it was hanging out with us. After about 10 minutes of playing with it and petting it the doe decided it had enough and just turned around and walked off. We were out in the middle of no where. The deer was perfectly healthy and eating desert vegetation and would not eat human food. I don't know if it had been raised and turned loose or it just lacked the part of the brain that shows fear. It was a great experience for my kids. Anyone else have this happen ever.

I was not going to let them feed her but my cousins boyfriend tried and it would not eat anything but natural vegetation. I guess someone had to have raised it and let it go or brain damage. Once I figured out it wasn't sick or wasn't going to hurt the kids I figured why not let the kids make a memory they will never forget. I guarantee I will never forget it. It was kind of humbling that the big bad hunter was being turned into a little girl by the cute little nice deer. None the less it was still a cool experience to have with my kids.

Man those birds turned out awesome. I could not be happier with the way they turned out and my god it only took 5 months. You are the man Tommy. I am so pumped to put them up in the cabin. Hopefully we can kill 3 on the rez and 3 on our state hunts between you, me and my dad. Thanks for everything Tommy and trust me you will get a good tip for a great job on those mounts. That is the first time my dad and I have both killed on the same hunt together. Those great mounts will remind us of that unbelievable turkey hunt for the rest of our years up there. Thanks again buddy. Anybody on here want a great looking mount from an honest hard working good person, then send it to Tommy you will end up with a mount of a life time. -

My 2009 Mount is hangin'
matthewp45 replied to Faster Daddy!'s topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
As good of a job as the taxidermist did on that beautiful buck it was done by either Weller's or Mogollon Taxidermy. Just a guess but I think I am gonna be right. -
I was sure pumped up for drawing a unit 1 archery antelope tag this year. I scouted my tail off seeing a ton of bucks in quite a few different spots. Every scouting trip I would check all of my spots and usually see most of the same bucks. I would usually see the antelope on each trip in the same areas and many times would stop and glass them a couple hundred yards away and they would pay no attention to me. I have been scouting a couple times a month since May. In July on both of my scouting trips I saw what seemed to me to be sure signs of the rut. The bigger bucks were with 10-15 does and had a couple satellite bucks around. Well fast forward to opening day on Friday. The first spot I tried I found about 30 does in a large group with a tiny buck chasing them around. We got about 3/4 mile from them and they took off and ran about 2 1/2 miles before they stopped. I thought wow I have never seen antelope this jumpy someone must have been messing with these and why is that tiny buck with all the does? So I leave and go to another spot. I drove across about 8 miles of prairie where regularly I would see 8-10 bucks on every trip through. I finally found 1 buck at the end of the road. He had 54 does with him (yes thats right 54) and he was a tiny buck as well (maybe 11" tall). No other bucks to be found. Fast forward to today. I ended up seeing about 20% of the bucks that I would normally see on a scouting trip during 3 days of hunting. The only thing I did different while hunting was cover a lot more ground and glass as far as we could see until our eyes were about to pop out. I have never been as clueless as I was on this hunt. The biggest buck I found was about 12-13" tall and OK mass. All of the does were in huge groups of 20-54 in each group and each group had a little buck running them around. I only saw about 4 or 5 bucks that I would consider to be satellite bucks. Another crazy thing was how jumpy they were. If you were with in a 1,000 yards of a group and stopped to look at them or god forbid they see you walking they would take off for at least a mile or 2 and this is the first hunt, they have not had any pressure until Friday. I did get two good stalks in where I got with in range on some small bucks by belly crawling in but the wind shifted both times and I got screwed. My conclusion which could be totally wrong is that the rut is pretty much over and the big bucks have moved off the does and the satellite medium type bucks have as well and are not very active trying to recover from the rut. I can't explain why they were more jumpy than I have ever seen any antelope. I was just wondering if anyone else had a tag around unit 1 and what their experience was to see if it was just the areas I was hunting or if they had the same experience too. Do any of you guys know why the bigger bucks would disappear, the does were in such huge groups, the little bucks were running these huge groups around and why so dang jumpy. Sorry such a long post but after putting in so much time for the hunt and to have it turn out this way was straight crazy ad I want to find out why. Thanks in advance for any and all info.

I hand load 140 grain accubonds for my 270 WSM. I would also recommend any factory ammo that makes them as well. I know federal makes some and Nosler makes some factory stuff in the accubond. Just shoot the one that shoots the best through your gun.

That lion turned out amazing. I don't think anyone could have done a better job, Congrats again and I sure did have a great time hunting with you guys . Hopefully one of you guys will get another tag next year and we can go try again. Take care!

That is a great bull! Congrats on a great first day bull!

That is an awesome mount. Wellers and Mogollon are the only places I will take my animals. Bud Weller actually taught Clay at Mogollon a lot when Clay actually worked under him years ago. The mounts that they both put out are as realistic as they get. Congrats>

Anybody here ever used the Gunclaw???
matthewp45 replied to Stallone A.'s topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I bought it a year ago and was amazed at how steady you can be with it. I used it on my mule deer hunt and had to take the shot at 450 yards. I put my rifle in the claw and got ready for the shot. I was amazed at how steady it was. I was sitting indian style and I could keep the cross hairs on the vitals with ease. I kept it right on his shoulder and he dropped in his tracks. There is still a little side to side movement and you have to control your breathing as well as a good trigger squeeze but it is the best thing I have used to shoot off of beside being prone. If you buy it you won't regret it. IMO -
That is a great buck! Sounds like it was well deserved.

If it had a Mullins stcker on it too it was ole Christain (azcouesandelk).Sounds like him if he was driving really fast.

Very nice buck! Give us some measurements. Congrats.

Yes I heard two different elk bugeling right by Nelson Reservoir on Friday morning. One of them bugeled twice and on the second one another bull answered him down off the mountain. It was a great sound to hear up in the mountains.
