    lions

Nobody got hurt. I had no reason to kill him. Here are a few dog pictures from a different day.
  2. Those people in "general" are unreasonable. Regardless of what the issue is. I would avoid them like a Muslim terrorist.
  3. I hate to tell you guys, but they have sent someone in there. Probably one of the most knowledgeable guys there is in the country on snaring lions. He spent 23 days hiking and looking before finding his FIRST lion track in the Kofa's. He has snared over 225 lions in two years so I think he knows what he is looking for and doing. In his opinion, the lions, what few there are, are not the problem. Maybe it would be an advantage for the sheep if we quit blaming lions for everything negative that happens in Arizona and determine what some of the other factors might be. Just a thought. No doubt lions do take sheep; no one would argue that fact. But giving the impression that the Kofa's are over run by lions is misleading. You mean to say that suddenly all these lions just moved in from somewhere??????? Like where? I'm really curious and interested.
  4. I don't know of any that would, but there probably is someone somewhere who would sell their soul. I wouldn't give them the time of day personally.
  5. I agree. Not sure why anyone would need an auction tag to hunt lions. As for "grey area" of pursuit; not really sure what is grey about it as in any kind of hunting, you always have the opportunity to "not shoot" etc. If I pass up a mule deer buck, am I "harrassing" wildlife because I never had any intention of shooting the small buck I am looking at? Other states do have pursuit seasons for lions and things have gone very well actually. If I were a lion I think I would prefer being pursued and let go than shot. JMO I know lots of guys that pursue with trail cams, cameras, video cameras etc. No intent to kill, only photograph. Not real sure with the issue is here. I believe you can pursue raccoons also but don't quote me. But personally I would find anything the Sierra Club does as suspect. As a side note, I had the president of the Prescott chapter of the SC one time tell me that it was a waste of money to treat old veterans at the VA hospital (he worked there) because, quote, "they were gonna die anyway". I found that comment rather interesting. he was wearing the usual SC "uniform"------the large brimmed at (he looked like he had been fried in a deep fryer) with the Syrup bottle full of water on his side with his belt run through the handle.

    Bluffed Up Lion

I can take no credit for the dog. A guy named Dave Carlson came up with the cross. The dog was "given" to me in a sense. The owner unfortunately died suddenly. I understand that he is 1/4 gsp and 3/4 bluetick. He has a decent nose, good tree and knows how to move a track. I have only one dog that can move like he does he is an amazing animal. Tough. I watched him run a night old track in the powder dust this week and he was 4' off to the side of the track as he ran it. I can't believe how blessed I am just to be able to hunt the dog.

One thing I forgot; he even skins or carries the lion. Heck of a deal.

Andy takes the pictures; finds the tracks; follows the dogs; helps me out of the truck or off my mule and carries the water.

Those two guys were about the nicest guys you could ever go hunting with. The best part, lion or no lion, they both enjoyed being out and that is what really matters to me. I am writing this from Hue City, south Vietnam; about ready to head home. just hoping ole brother andrew has a good track going and his dogs are pounding it out. i feel so blessed to meet and know people like Andy et al. Yeah, and even ole Grong is good people. i heard that Grong's miniature goat, Gary died; hope you guys remember Gary with a moment of silence. I'm sending flowers today.

I'm thinking weight wise 110 max In 40 years the heaviest lion that I ever caught, since I weighed it was 155. Guts and all. That was just a couple weeks ago. I do hear of 200 lb lions though. I think the next closest was 151 and then really down hill from there. Mostly 100 lbs avg on the adult males and 65-70 on females. I have never caught what I hear called, "a typical 90 lb. female" but there are a whole lot of guys that have seen more lions than I have.

"Extensive knowledge" and "lucky guess" are one and the same phrase. We got lucky guessing where he was headed as he was down real real low and two days ahead of us. We jumped 8 miles on a hunch and there he was, now only a day ahead. We jumped 3 more miles and beyond my belief, found where he scratched under a big pinon tree. From then on, Andy pretty much did all the work. We lost him two hours before sundown but felt like we had him within a square mile. Our "hail Mary" shot was for Andy to angle across for that mile and see if God would just hand us this lion on a platter. Well, Andy only went half the distance and hit the track again. He was laid up somewhere nearby and the two dogs with him, Bonnie AKA "Nipples" and Hap caught the lion real quick. The most fun for me, other than watching the dogs work, progress or screw up, is seeing other people get real excited about the events we are trying to unravel.

    Dogman strikes again!

Well truthfully I didn't really do all that much. Another guy had seen a lion track a week before. My lion hunting buddy, Andy Knowlton and I went and took a look. The lion went from down low up into some little canyon country and I could not find him. My client and I walked the canyons and just kept circling. The middle of day 3 we cold trailed into a two day old scratch and got a good direction. The lion headed north into a country with deep snow and no deer or elk. We just circled ahead after finding the clue and cut him fresh. It was actually a pretty simple, easy catch. Thanks to Outdoor writer for the good referral and a good client to hunt with. This lion was very similar to the one Outdoor Writer took while hunting with me 20 years ago. Anyway, lion hunting is all about the dogs and not just killing lions.

A few more elk scouting pics

Is that a picture of Travis at graduation? Or at MLB training camp? It's a pic of Grong after a skate contest at the Cottonwood Junior High, go Lobo's. (If it were Trav, his hair would be frosted blonde in the front) At first I thought he was 380ish but after looking at the video I think he's 360's. That main beam on the right side is way short, heavy though. I'd like to see him on the dirt, we never even pursued him. Someone had him running into no mans land at first light opening day.

Is that a picture of Travis at graduation? Or at MLB training camp? I agree with you on the "score". Under 370. I guessed him at 380 the first time I saw him so subtract 30 from that and you have a maybe 350. ha Just my way of scoring. Grong can't score worth a flip either. In his case, subtract 40. But that is a cool bull.

Believe it or not, The T-Rex bull in the white mtns you are referring to is a DIFFERENT bull than the T-Rex Gino is talking about. The T-Rex bull from the white mtns was killed out of Scotts Reservoir on the last day of the hunt. He was wounded by some idiot a few days before and was rut crazed and wounded swimming around in the lake when some fisherman spotted him. they called someone they knew with a tag and he came and shot him from the boat....Took 5 arrows I heard. The bull is at majestics taxidermy, about a half mile from the lake.... This is the same bull that had the HUGE shed posted last spring with the guy holding it. Everyone said it would go 400 easy,Remember??? One problem is the bull has a real small side and doesnt match the big side...Its still a nice bull...dont know what it scores... As far as the lake and such, i imagine that whats being investigated... This is all hearsay, Just what i heard second hand.....LOL Ron Ok, that goes along with the second hand info I've heard...I do remember a big shed from that area, the one Jay was holding? Lots of good bulls this year, GOOD LUCK to those who have the late tags. Since we live here we look or see those bulls all the time. Just no real personal interest in them. The only regret I have is the fact that game and fish put so many rifle tags in an area with nice mature bulls that are easily mucked out. Seems like if they are pushing for hunter opportunity, more archery tags would have been a better option. JMO

Not much of an elk man, but I couldn't get 385 out of him or even close. I hope the guy that kills him does though and more.

I was trying to get some bear pics and instead got that bull. I don't know how to put pictures on here but will ask Josh. The elk was a long ways from where he was in that flat opening morning. Maybe he is back now. I would like to know what he might go also, if someone kills him. That one side is really nice. I think Josh has some video of him also????? regards,
