Just got back from Wyoming with my buddy Scott Simons. We hunted three days and were able to sort through a few hundred Wyoming speedgoats and come up with a couple of great bucks. The first group we spotted over a mile away. After some time behind the big glass I opted to get in and get a closer look at them. With light fading and the herd across an open sage flat we set-up for the shot. I ranged the herd at 779 and dialed in elevation adjustments on my Zeiss Conquest 6.5x20 50mm scope. After a doe cleared the buck I sent a 180 gr Scirocco through his vitals. He went down within about 5 seconds. VIDEO LINK: The buck isn’t very long but has great top and base mass. Great prongs and a cool look to him. The next day Scott was able to hike about three miles and get a 450 yard shot at his buck. The buck has an awesome frame and a gnarly little kicker. We were very fortunate considering they were leftover tags and we’ve never set foot in the unit before. Thanks in advance for watching!

Hey Guys-- I work with a non-profit foundation called Shun the Sun. Its purpose is to educate people on the harmful effects of prolonged UV exposure. We held our annual race today and have race shirts left over. We would like to sell the leftovers on a first-come basis. These shirts are awesome. They’re 95% BAMBOO and 5% Lycra and have an SPF of 50! They’re very light-weight and are excellent at heat and moisture dissipation. The fit tight and can be an excellent base layer or athletic, running, training etc. top. They’re very similar in texture and fit to a lot of the Merino Wool and athletic tops out there today. We have sizes XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL, XXXL and we are asking $20.00 (shipping included). These are very high quality and we guarantee you’ll like them! Thanks for your help and donations to the foundation! If you would like an order form, please e-mail me at: zgriffith@shunthesun.org or call with any questions! (602) 466-8406 www.shunthesun.org

Thanks for the comments guys! Yeah he went to twon on that barrel cactus--headbutted it first and then ate it down alomost 10" like a pot of chili! We figured he was 5 0r 6 years old and estimated him on the higher end of your guesses. His bases don't get enough credit from the angles in the video. I think he's a you superstar to be--2-3 more years and he'll be an auction type ram. I use a Sony digital camera--internal memory--no tapes. Its got a 20x Zeiss optical zoom and fit its my pocket. I used a Swaro 20-60x65mm HD spotting scope and then videoed on another tripod to get a solid rest. He was about 700 yds away.

He looks younf but could be a PIG! Any guesses on score?

Cool buck! Love those beams!

After glassing for a few hours this buck popped on our smae ridge about 150 yds straight below us. We were scrambling to get set up on him and he looked like he was going to bust any second so my brother leaned against a tree and tried to sneak one through him......FRRRRRRRT! He looked like he was really webbed and palmated. Is it just me or was the body on this deer huge?

After unsuccessful draw results in EVERY state, I decided to look into non-resident vouchers. I got in touch with a great guy names Jeff Urban with SureWest Custom Hunts www.swcustomhunts.com. Jeff had a lot of options but what I wanted more than anything was access to rutting bulls. After several conversations and weighing my options, I elected to hunt a large 8,000 acre ranch in western New Mexico. I was told that there wasn’t a ton of elk on the property but there were some great bulls that hold up in there when pressure on public kicks in. I anxiously counted down the days until Sep 30 arrived and I was on my way to NM. I was greeted by Jeff’s associate Bart Hicks and after a morning tour of the property and access points I was left on my own to figure things out. I really liked the DIY approach they offer. It saves the hunter money and has the feel of doing it on your own—they essentially arrange access and give you area information. I was up at 4:00 am on Sat Oct 1st and out calling. Not a sound was heard across the cedars. It was around 40 degrees and absolutely no wind. I hiked the west boundary of the property and called until around 10:00. I saw very little sign and didn’t see anything. That evening was similar. Sunday morning I was out working an entirely different section; same results. The water tanks had few tracks and old cow/calf tracks on top of that. I was really frustrated. Three days and not an elk? On my way out I glassed the entire property and noticed the glimmer of a little pond way lower in elevation than Id been hunting. I worked down to it and couldn’t believe the amount of fresh sign. Not only tracks but at least one good bull track! He’d been wallowing in there the night before. I ripped back to camp excited about the evening. And then it rained. And rained. And poured until 5:00. When I finally dared peek my head out to check the status I expected puddles everywhere—nothing! The dry ground just sucked up the water so I grabbed my gear and hauled A to the tank. I got set up by 5:30 and began calling lightly with the Hoochie Mama. After 10 minutes I heard a faint bugle—way off. I kept plying with it on and off and about 20 minutes later I caught movement on the ridge about 1,000 yards away. I was able to coax this bull in with virtually no cover. Even though I didn’t have a decoy, he kept trotting in. At 80 yds, he had almost gotten around me, downwind. I finally let one rip. The first shot was a little high but the video is great and you can see the steam blast out of him as the 180 gr Scirocco waltzes through. Not a monster but a great and ONLY elk I saw on the trip. I had about lost my mind. I cant fathom some guys hunting 2-3 weeks without seeing action. Elk are addictive! "You skin grizz?"
