I dunno guys- being someone who was not able to do a whole lot of pre-season scouting, I'm going to appreciate the easy identification of popular travel routes (both 2-legged and 4-legged). What I won't appreciate is the biting insects. We have lots of water down here too- but I like it, the grass is up tall and it should make stalks easier than trying to close the distance through a huge burn (Last Year). I'm actually pretty pumped up about it. Gonna take a walkabout this weekend to see where they're at then maybe pinpoint a spot to sit next weekend.

Have your barrel threaded to 5/8-24 and try different ones. The BOSS system works, but I wouldn't exactly call it the best there is... LOTS of different brake designs out there for the AR-10 platform that would work too. There are also a few ways to lessen muzzle jump that don't include a gunsmith's services and putting an expensive brake on it. Proper technique/form would be the first thing to look at. Second, I'd look at the load you are shooting- 300 WSM is a "kicker" in most factory loads and could be handloaded "softer" without sacrificing a whole lot of performance (like trying a lighter bullet weight). Third, NAVCOM rubber... Limbsaver products like the barrel ring and recoil pad can really take the sting out of a hard kicking rifle. Another expensive option is a thumbhole or pistol gripped stock. To me, 12" inches of muzzle jump is kind of unreal- is this offhand, off of a bipod, or on a rest???

Hey guys. Being from New York, I've never tried going after deer in velvet... Or from a ground blind. I have some concerns about insect bites as the medication I am currently taking seems to have made me an absolute target for anything that bites. Back in July I was literally attacked by swarms of No-See-Ums and found out I am allergic to the bites! I have a Thermacell, and I know to use that while in the blind, but I'll be camping out a few days and I need to know some tips and tricks to keep from becoming the guy with "chicken Pox"... I know about permethrin clothing treatment and deep woods Off, Just wondering what other guys use and what might also work to keep me from alerting the deer in the early archery season.

I come from a state that has a bait ban- there's still lots of deer, and you can shoot 5 (2 bucks and 3 does) per year! I really don't have a dog in this fight- but I've hunted over bait in Texas, and I threw a mineral brick out in front of my blind in 30B last year... I have NEVER tagged out over bait. What I fail to understand in this State's policy is the complete and utter disregard for a doe harvest. What the heck? How can you seriously manage deer herds with no doe harvest? I just don't understand why you cannot select either sex for at least an archery tag. seriously. I know AZGFD's ideal buck/doe ratio is 1:10... But that is a ridiculous number. A single buck cannot mate with that many does each year. Maybe 4-5, but certainly not 10. You wanna stop CWD and all those other nasty diseases??? Maintain a HEALTHY population- not just a big population. This is the only state I know of that makes a buck fight 10 does for food and water. AZ has no antler restrictions, so people shooting spikes is ok??? Think about it- you shoot a doe and there's still 9 others for the buck to mate with. You shoot that 1 buck and 10 does don't get preggo. Baiting ain't the issue- it's the buck/doe ratio that is gonna hurt the deer numbers.

I have one of the non 3-D bug tamer suits in camo... I totally forgot about it until y'all mentioned it!!! It has a few tears in the leg but I could sew it up tight!!! The face net would be pretty easy to take on and off in the blind- what about treating it with permethrin? does that stuff smell? And JLW- you ain't kidding bro! Them little bugs are everywhere and HUNGRY!!! I get bit just walking the dogs around the block...

I'm ready- gotta work Friday, but I'll be out and about Saturday looking for a buck.
-
yeah, if they see you actively pursuing out-of-season game, that's the only time you'll have an issue.

I am sending prayers your way- and adding that doing this to kids is bad enough, but also look into the amount of medicare/medicaid fraud and abuse our senior citizens have to endure as well. Truly sickening.

Bears are really good at sniffing out food- that being said, don't EVER walk through a bait pile! Bears will follow you wherever you walk until that scent is gone. I had a buddy lose an excellent pair of Danner'sbecause of this. He left them out in front of the cabin and they were shredded the next morning! He told us he accidentally walked through the bait traveling back from his stand.

luvdemcoues: You are right and I guess in my own wierd way I was trying to say that he shouldn't be held liable for anything... BUT, case law shows that sometimes courts go a little off the common sense path and starts nit-picking the scenario and the good guy ends up catching criminal charges or wrongful death/assault with deadly weapon/negligence monetary settlements. That's why we need more judges and jurys that will stand up and support these types of heros. That's why we need to educate our CCW's to shoot only when it is absolutely necessary and stop shooting when the threat is eliminated. EXAMPLE: You can shoot a guy wielding a 2x4 running at you until he stops coming at you, but if you plug him in the head after he's laying on the ground- did you then cross a line? Example: man pulls a knife and it looks like he's threatening you, you pull your gun, he sees it and turns to run away... can you still shoot him? Same thing in this scenario- the bad guys were sprinting towards the door in what I see as an effort to escape with their lives... good guy chases them very deliberately and keeps shooting at them even after they've exited the premises. That round that he shot out of the door was probably the only one that would have sent him to jail if he'd hit somebody's little kid... Clearly this man knew what he was doing and didn't cause any collateral damage- but just something to think about when you're letting the copper coated lead fly.

Pine Donkey is right on... gotta be ready to hoof it.

access to the higher elevations is an issue- but there's still plenty of good spots you can go... Pretty sure contacting Mr. Ward would be in your best interest.

Welcome! I shot ducks last year on base, but they dissappear very quickly after the opener.

There's lots of FS access on the east side of the whetstone mtns... but unfortunately there will not be very many areas to find solitude if you know what I mean. If you are willing to hunt on weekdays your odds will be better of seeing more deer than people. Border Patrol presence is very high in that unit and expect to see BP trucks and helicopters checking you out if you are crawling around in the dark getting to and from your spots. I hunted that area for Javelina and predators this spring and saw lots of deer amongst the cattle.

I had a DISC rifle a few years ago and I used Winchesters and CCI's... As for the BEST primer- well you'd have to try a few different types over a chrony to figure that out. Lately, there has been a trend to go to a slower burning muzzleloading 209 primer such as the Remington Kleenbores and the Triple Se7en style ones. They've slowed the ignition rate a little bit in order to burn more powder closer to the breech before the load starts to move down the barrel- thus creating more pressure and velocity at the muzzle. The "hotter" shotgun 209 primers are thought to have been pushing the load down the barrel while burning the propellant the entire length of the barrel (and sometimes outside the barrel) and losing some pressure which translated to some losses in velocity. For most folks, regular old shotgun primer 209's are more than adequate if you are loading and seating the bullets correctly. I shoot whatever primer is the cheapest which happened to be CCI's the last time my local retailer had them. I shoot CCI 209m's behind 2 Triple Se7en Magnum pellets pushing a 295gr Powerbelt Aerolite or a Hornady 300gr XTP sabot. I get about 1920-1950fps consistently out of a clean barrel- but after about three or four shots I've had a few random ones get up slightly over 2000.

Proof positive that a little .380 ACP is not enough gun. I wish he'd have been carrying at least a .38SPL- HOLLOW POINTS PEOPLE!!! If those bad guys really had their stuff together they would have returned fire on that old guy- but turns out they were scared out of their minds that someone was shooting at them! And I think this incident is still a good example of what an armed citizenry can provide... He did make some serious tactical errors that could have gotten himself killed/charged with a crime/sued. I absolutely LOVE how he deliberately changed his attack angles to avoid collateral damage... but I do not think he should have continued the attack all the way out the door like he did. The threat was subdued at that point and he should have hunkered down, called the police, and reloaded. He even shot at them several times when they were clearly running away- and he shot out the door at them while they were running away. Honestly, those were some risks that we should address in CCW classes. I hope that no judge in this world would let this man be charged or be held liable for anything... but the window is open because of some of the "heat of the moment" errors he made.

Didn't see mine on there... I use Mid Atlantic X-system heads... Spin stabilized cut-on-contact fixed blade with mechanical bleeder blades. They never have caught on big yet, but they fly true to field point on my set up.

Upcoming Season
Scooter replied to bluedevil99's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Hey bud, welcome to the CW forums. I'm in the same location and I like to get after the ducks.... It's pretty tricky, but I think I have it figured out somewhat. -
What clothing do you wear in blind during august?
Scooter replied to couesdeerhntr's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Don't know. I guess if it will be too hot I will just wear a black T-Shirt and mesh shorts under a light camo coverall... I have a battery operated blind fan that's pretty quiet so as long as there is air moving and the thermacell is working, I'm comfy. -
I used to do it a lot with my Oneida and aluminums... Moved to a new bow and carbon arrows two years ago and have only broke nocks and cut vanes a few times. I'm like a few guys who were on here already- if I'm shooting tight groups I use one each for different targets on my block.

Why 150Gr??? That's gonna be a really hard one to find (if it even exists in .310") since it is a "Milsurp" round. I would stick with the 123's and maybe move to a Hornady Interlock SP.
-
It saddens me to say this, but there have been a lot of extremely long distance "Golden Bullet" human deaths caused by that particular round. You put it where it needs to be and whatever you hit is going down. Heck, I was unaware that the M77 was ever chambered in that round...

how do you get the "new" smell out of your ground blind
Scooter replied to kennyazman's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Nothing beats a few days in-place where you'll be hunting it so that they get used to seeing it. Bobbyo said it best- human smell will trump chinese nylon/plastic smell in the deer-danger scale any day. -
You can load subsonic for just about any round... the effective range will suffer, but hey- at least you won't be deaf! Revolvers are loud... you could check with a gunsmith if a custom barrel crown/brake would help direct the muzzle blast straight away from you instead of everywhere... 11 degree target crowns tend to isolate the blast downrange on rifles. Still- I'd wear Hearpro.
