  1. Hey Bob, I'm sure the "ethics police" would disagree, but after a minute at full draw, I couldn't risk letting down my bow. Believe me, I much prefere a broadside shot. I had confidence in me taking this kind of shot since I had shot probably thousands of arrows in my back yard at all angles and distances previous to the hunt.

The scent bomb I am referring to are the little orange bottles made by Tink's 69. They have a cotton wick inside. I spray doe in heat scent on them and they work very well during the rut. You probably have seen them.

  2. I have had excellent success with Innerloc stainless steel 100's. I shot a Coues back in Jan. and they proved lethal and very well made. The 2x3 came in to my stand at 18 yards and started sniffing a scent bomb I had set in a bush. After a minute at full draw, I decided he wasn't going to give me a broadside shot. I put the 20 yard pin at the base of his neck and buried the shaft to the vanes. Excellent blood trail by the Innerloc and the buck traveled only 30 yards before collapsing. The head took out his lungs and part of his heart. Upon field dressing, the stainless steel head looked brand new!!!! They fly like a dream and are very lethal. Recomend them highly.

  3. Just waiting for late March to come. The wife has an archery bear tag for 33. Many pics on trail cam. I guess Arizona bears don't hibernate!!!! Have to set up a double seat tree stand. She's in the "X" ring consistently at 20 yards. I plan to do some calling with a predator call . Anybody had luck calling in bears?

  4. Noworries, pick a spot where most hikers, picnickers or other hunters do not go. Remember, most people will not travel very far from their vechicle!!!!! My trail cam is at the bottom of a canyon where three game trails converge. It is only about 500 yards from the road but is rarely visited by humans. Nobody has bothered it in three years (except a black bear who left teeth marks and his mug shot on it). Many big bucks visit(especially during the rut) and several lions and coati mundi. It is always a thrill when I get the pics back from Walgreens. You never know what is going to show up. I have my cam about 36" from the ground and it takes great pics at that height. I'm waiting for a good deal on a digital. Have fun!!!

  5. Hey gotcoues, I also will be trying a decoy this year. I got the carry-lite. It has removable antlers so I can use it as a doe. From everything I've read, decoys can really bring them in close. I plan to experiment with the buck or doe. I have scent to use(tarsal gland when I use the buck, estrous when I use the doe.) The bucks are really territorial in the pre-rut and will challenge the decoy. Try a grunt or doe bleat to get their attention. Good luck and know us how they work. I will do the same.

  6. Hey hunt4horns, thanks for the invite!!!!! With deer like that, I just might take you up on that. Mason's deer is a real STUD!!!! I think these pics truly show the 134 inches. Congratulations to Mason and a great deer. Hey Ernesto C., thanks for the blessing!!!! God bless you to. Good luck to all Dec. hunters!!! May we all hope to score like Mason!!!!

  7. Hey younghunter, I've taken more than 20 in my life. I can remember in the 1980's when there were lelftover permits available!!!!! Even Dec. rut hunt tags were available. You could actually take two deer per year. I am 49 years old so I've hunted for many years. My deer cam has taken several big buck pics over the last two years. Mostly they appear during the rut when they are cruising.

They are there. You just have to be patient. As far as the pics, my camera is a 35mm and I put them on a cd. I try to send them to this site but apparentlh the file isn't big enough. I'm still trying to downsize so I can post. As far as size, I know one buck is at least 118" and another is pushing 110". That was last Jan. and with the wet year we have had, who knows how big they are this year!!!!! We will see this weekend!! good luck on your hunts!!

  8. I'm a meat guy and have yet to bag an AZ deer of either species. I'd rather not shoot a spike (just cause they look goofy) but anything else will work for me. 24B Muley tag for November, and hopefully an Archery Coues in January (right, desertbull??)

Hopefully this will be my "Arizona Break Out " year - bull elk, mule deer, javelina, Coues, bear and turkey.. woo hoooooooooooooo

Nothing but Boone and Crokett for me!!! I've killed many Coues and am holding out for a real wall hanger. Situation has never been better with all the rain and vegetation to eat. The trail cam tells me they are out there!!! Will be patient and glass, glass and glass some more. If I can't find a Booner this weekend, there's always the rut in Dec. Good luck to everybody and have a safe hunt
