    Prairie Doggin'

The 17HMR is an awesome round on prairie dogs. A lot of the clips of dogs with nothing left of them were taken with a 221 Fireball.

    Prairie Doggin'

We probably had 10 different rifles amongst us, nothing larger than .22cal. The majority of those were actually 17HMR.

    Prairie Doggin'

Purchased Adobe Premiere Elements, and it crashed my computer everytime I tried to finish the video. Then I purchased Cyberlinks Power Direct, and it crashed my computer. Finally used the Windows video editing software that came with my computer for free and it ended up working but it has very little editing options. Adobe's product would have been awesome if my computer could have handled the media.

    Who is ready for august

California sucks for many reasons, but one cool thing is I will be hunting deer next week...and it won't be 100 degrees outside. But still more excited about archery opening up in AZ!!

Yeah....that was one of the dumbest comments I've read on this site!

Rangefinder - Leica or Swarovski 1600 yd

I've held both and that Leice is super slim. I'd be interested to see how easily each spit out readings out past 500yds. I woulda bought the same Leice but its expensive and you really gotta ask yourself (especially if you're a bow hunter) "why the heck do you need to range something at over 1000+ yds??"

    New rifle

Smoke that wt with a 180 gr accubond! Im in to reloading and it's fun to hypothesize about the optimal bullet weight as to not waste an ounce of meat...blah, blah, blah. IMO, killing a deer cleanly in one shot is much more humane than trying to pussyfoot the minimum bullet weight as to not waste half a bite of meat. Respect the game by knocking its lights out in one shot. Shooting a 300WSM is expensive no matter which bullet you use. And I know a lot of people will disagree with this, but my thought is find a heavy bullet that you can shoot with confidence and use it for everything from pigs to elk. That round shoots flat for a while and it will serve your purpose out to 500yds+ all day long. I've said this before on this forum, but i've used a 180 grain 300WSM accubond on pig, javelina, antelope, deer and elk and notta one took a step after being hit. That's the goal right?!

    Blind Etiquette

I recall a heated post a few months back about stands, blinds, what to do, and what not to do, do you use it, do you leave a note, do you go somewhere else. It was a great discussion but at the end of the day, I have to believe the vast majority of everyone on this site would agree to this: 1.) if ain't yours, leave it alone; and 2.) an unoccupied blind or stand doesn't stake claim to a public hunting spot The answer to your question is simple JakeL....hunt that spot all day long until you see another hunter that beat u to the spot on a given day. I would welcome a conversation with a pissed off hunter who left their blind out all year who felt like I was stepping on their toes. But if he was cool about it, I'd gladly back out....but I'd be damned if I get an earful from someone who thinks his abandoned blind signifies ownership of an area. And yes, I absolutely consider it abandoned if its left out for more than a day without being used. Don't care if a dude is injured or whatever caused him to not come get his stuff. I wouldn't touch it but it's abandoned and it wouldn't cause me to think twice about hunting an area.

My First Archery Kill, before and after

Tanks! All I need now is a bull elk, a white tail, and a mulie. Is that too much to ask for this early in my hunting career???? Bit of advise....make sure you hang that pig off center over the fireplace. That way every time you look at it, and every time your wife looks at it, it will just annoy the heck outta ya. Shell have no other option but to push you out the door come hunting season so that u can get another one to hang on the wall to help balance the decor! My wall looks completely off balance right now....if only I had a huge mule deer, it would bring the whole feng sui together at my place!

    Family Dispute

I recall seeing a pic of an elk in marana on the Internet. Looked very similar to the terrain near picacho. Had to have been an escaped elk though.

    new non-resident laws

I agree. I'm all for resident guides benefitting from their states game, but I think G&F Dept's should give more weight to DIY hunters. In areas like WY, non-residents are required to book an outfitter in wilderness areas. And what you will see out there is the outfitters stake claim to certain areas. I personally think it makes a lot of sense for a non-resi to book an outfitter in WY wilderness area, but I'd like to see G&F Depts try to encourage DIY hunting.

    Weird deaths!

Was hunting elk just outside of Yellowstone in 2008 with an outfitter that has been hunting that area for decades. We had 5 or 6 other hunters in our camp which was advertised as the most remote location in the lower 48. One particular hunter showed up with a very large revolver on his hip and a brand new 10 gallon hat...i will refer to him as "Jeff". Our guides were the real deal cowboy type, and I could tell they thought Jeff was a tool. Anyways, three or four days in to the hunt and none of us are seeing elk. As we ride back in to camp late one night, I ask one of the guides that is helping with the horses if anyone saw anything, and he says "yup, Jeff shot one! But you'll never believe the story." Apparently Jeff crushes a bull at 600-700 yards in one shot from a very extreme angle. While Jeff, his hunt buddy and their guide start quartering the bull, Jeff decides he needs to take a turd so he walks 50 yards in to the brush. Lucky for Jeff, he had the forethought to bring his rifle with him. As he squats, he sees momma grizz running full tilt towards the elk carcass and the guide. He yells and the guide goes scrambling for his rifle. The momma bear hears Jeff screaming and hits the breaks and stares him down as Jeff grabs for his rifle. Right about then Jeff notices there are two cubs in toe and he is currently between them and their momma. The momma grizz notices the same, starts snapping her jaw and stomping her feet. And she proceeds to charge Jeff. With a scoped rifle, Jeff ends up crushing the grizz with one shot while it was running full speed towards him. It drops 20 feet from Jeff and eventually dies after a follow up shot. This dude has the coolest hunting story ever...he crushed a bull at over 600 yards and then killed a charging grizz in self defense at a very close range on U.S. soil. He was asked to stay in camp until the game & fish could come and investigate the grizzly kill. When they rode to the kill site 2 days later, poppa bear is eating momma bear. Game & fish said poppa bear most likely already killed the cubs...I guess they do this In an effort to get the sow to go back in to heat. Maybe not a "weird death" but definitely the craziest dang story following a kill I've ever been in proximity to.

    Javy Boar Attacks Caller!

Awesome video. But you guys should really work on your calling a bit more!! You know, so you can get them a bit closer. If they aren't throwing themselves on your arrow, you are doing something wrong! Haha...joking aside, that was pretty awesome.

    Check this out!

My dad has been taking my 16 yr old nephew (his grandson) out hunting for years. And my nephew has developed a passion for hunting as well as collecting taxidermy, etc. My nephew is also in to reptiles, and he's had numerous snakes in cages through the years. Well apparently a couple years ago, the two were out hunting together and my dad found this shed and gave it to my nephew. My nephew apparently threw it in one of his snake cages and it's been sitting there unnoticed for a few years. I'm over at their house today and they pull this thing out of the snake cage. I immediately ask my nephew where it came from and he said his Papa found it on a hunt and gave it to him. I'm thinking Papa probably bought that somewhere and tossed it on the ground so his grandson could make an incredible "find". So I call my dad, and sure as heck, he found this shed a few years ago....at Willow Springs!! So here's my first question (and I know it sounds silly) but is this for sure a coues shed or did someone drop their eastern whitetail rattling shed by accident? That eyeguard is crazy! I know the measuring technique in the pic is not accurate, but it'll get you close. I am certain this thing has at least a 19" main beam. We measured this one antler at 55 5/8. And it's missing probably two inches of it's G3. My obvious second question is what do you think this deer would have scored by looking at these pics, assuming his right side matched of course?
  20. GreeneMachine

What do yall think this buck would score?

If you don't see anything bigger in the next month, shoot this one before he sheds! Or shoot this one now and if you see something bigger between now and next fall, shoot it also...regs are for squares!
  21. GreeneMachine

What do yall think this buck would score?

At first glance I would have said low 80s but my vote is upper 80's with those nice eye guards. Go shoot it so we can take a closer look.

    Check this out!

No kidding, makes me want to go grab a 37B WT tag! Although I've yet to see a WT on the hoof out there in 20+ years. Also makes me want to have my dad take me to the exact spot he found the shed and see if we can locate the other side.

    Application with a Lifetime License

Yup, that explanation is exactly how it was explained to me. I grew up in Tucson and right before I left I bought a lifetime license, and as I remember it they used to be less expensive. I did get drawn for bull elk unit 9 using it the first year so I have to believe that was due to being placed in the resident pool. You make a good point regarding non resident lifetime license holders screwing up the odds for residents. For selfish reasons I hope they don't change the rules but you make a good point. Youre right, probably wont become a big issue for another 10+ years or so. It will prob be talked about more when the number of apps amongst residents are on the rise. It'd be interesting to see how many non resi lifetime license holders apply and get drawn each yr...bet that's a stat azgf won't be disclosing any time soon!!!

    >300wsm or .300win mag?

Own a 300wsm weatherby (factory trigger sucks!) and reload using 180grain accubonds. I've shot javelina, pig, antelope, deer and elk with that 180gr round and not a single animal has taken a step after being hit...and not all shots were exactly well placed. Many would say that round is too much for anything less than an elk but I do not agree. Aside from one javelina that I sawed in half (using a partition rather than an accubond for whatever difference that would make) every animal that I have taken with it has had minimal damage to the meat. My goal is to put em in the dirt and the 300wsm does a good job of it. Can't comment on the win mag...don't own one.
