North American Deer Slam

Just got the new issue of Fair Chase magazine and they list 11 subspecies of mule deer. rocky mountain mule deer desert mule deer bura mule deer califonia mule deer southern mule deer inyo mule deer peninsula mule deer tiburon mule deer cedros island mule deer columbian blacktail deer sitka blacktail deer And I know there are a lot more subspecies of whitetail. I can see why Boone & Crockett only keeps records of the 5 major subspecies, the deer slam- mule, columbian and sitka blktail, whitetail and coues. There just isn't a big enough difference in some of those sub-subspecies and the geographic bounderies would be impossible. And Bill, we are having fun -
At what age do they regress and start to go downhill

I have also taken a few of the exotic deer, fallow, axis, sika etc. on large ranches in Texas (not free roaming but very wild) and in my mind any mature deer (4 1/2 and older) is a difficult trophy and exciting hunt. That said I have seen mature coues bucks do things that have blown my mind. I think the biggest factor that puts the coues at or near the top is his ability to disappear into his environment like nothing else -
I know most of the big optic companys sell digital camera adapters for their spotting but they are pretty costly. I actually saw a guy on tv use a second tripod for his digital camera and camcorder to hold them still while filming and taking pics through his spotting scope. I don't think I'd be wanting to carry all that.

AWESOME Thanks for sharing Allen. Co. blktail: 74 muley: 79 whitetail: 96 coues: 02 sitka: ? All of these were self guided except the whitetail. I'm always looking to upgrade, self guided, as I don't see myself paying for a guided hunt for any of these deer, unless I draw a super tag that justifies it. The main reason is another goal of mine is to take as many different North American big game species as possible and I have a long long way to go Anyone else have a deer slam, or close? Any other of slams? Rembrant, Denny's don't count -

Somebody out there has got to have taken the deer slam. If so tell us where you took each deer. Got my first whitetail in Montana. First coues in Sonora. First columbian blacktail in California. First big mule deer in Idaho. Hunted sitka blacktail on Admiralty Is. Alaska and unfortunatly struck out -

Carrying a handgun while archery hunting?
DEERSLAM replied to Whitehntr's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Wow that sucks. What if it's raining, you can't have your sidearm under your raincoat? I know where I hunt you are getting written up for carrying a firearm during bow season no matter what, end of story. BASS, sounds like if it's in your backpack it is considered a concealed weapon? Nontheless if you ever have to use it I pray that you can get to it fast enough -
Speaking of the coues buck contest, are these big bow bucks and others later this year going to have to be officially measured by someone to be entered?

North American Deer Slam
DEERSLAM replied to Shiras's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
SCI considers a deer slam as taking any 4 out of the following supspecies- whitetail, coues whitetail, columbian blacktail, sitka blacktail, rocky mtn. mule deer and desert mule deer. The true deer slam as I have known it from much reading and working towards completing it consists of the whitetail, coues whitetail, columbian blacktail, sitka blacktail and mule deer. If anyone knows of a good sitka hunt, thats what I need -
Another crap survey
DEERSLAM replied to KGAINES's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Why don't they do a survey on how many kids get killed by people driving and talking on their cell phone bet it's a whole lot more than 1,400. KGAINES, the number of kids kept safe because of a firearm in the house has got to be much much higher. -

I've seen the best landowner tags for tule get $10-12,000 SCI breaks down the whitetail into a number of different supspecies, northwestern, eastern, texas, southeastern, coues etc. The deer slam I believe is taken from the Boone & Crockett break down of the deer supspecies. I also believe the true deer slam does not split the mule deer into two seperate supspecies, rocky and desert. -
Looks like alot of bone Someone needs to put a tag on that brute so we can see him up close.

DEERSLAM replied to Shiras's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Shiras, The "North American deer slam" has been a goal of mine since I was a kid, hence the handle I go by. As a matter of fact the license plate on my rig is DEERSLM. I knew the other slams were more than likely out of my reach financely and with proper planning and hard hunting the deer slam could be the one I could achieve. Now I have not ruled out the elk slam or the moose slam, I now believe these may be doable and the bonus and preferance points are building up for some of these animals so I have hope. Oh and by the way I need a Sitka blacktail to complete my DEERSLAM and it is just a matter of time -
It was a good hunt plus something extra
