Brush Buster, It is good to hear from a rancher and his thoughts. I was going to ask when the point about letting public hunters on the ranches when LO tags are given and you answered that. The fact is that with out the LO tags there would be locked gates and no access to lands that are privately owned. And as stated, the wildlife belongs to the state but the land belongs to the private rancher--with that you must consider that there would be no way to access the state owned wildlife if the rancher decided to shut his gates. I would be very careful to ask for changes as those changes may not be what you expected--it happens, open the can and the worms will come out. I have applied three times in New Mexico twice for rifle and once for archery--i killed one with the bow and passed several bucks up with my rifle--once i was not drawn. When i go to New Mexico i spend my out of state dollars there and that helps the economy in that state. I am like many hunters who just want to enjoy a hunt, and rarely do i worry about how much someone paid for a tag--even though i know that some pay a lot of bucks to shoot a goat. I have guided in New Mexico for three years as well--meeting and speaking with a lot of ranchers. One i can tell you makes over 40% of her income from landowner tags and with out that income that ranch would be sold to the highest bidder and who knows what that person would be like--oh, she lets archers hunt on her place for free because she believes that archers have a lot less chance of shooting a buck. I have met the wealthy rancher as well and he is a good person but one that is in it for the money--he is not shy or embarrassed to state this and why should he be? It is an added income that he takes pride in. He controls predators and he gets a pay back. I don't know but i would say that the way the system is is the best way under the circumstances in New Mexico. Just my opinion though and i know that some will not agree with that.

Cousekiller, I asked Leonard how they will be able to enforce the law if it came to be and he said that "believe it or not the WM's do get out of their trucks and you will be surprised where they may be watching you from." I am not sure if the proposal goes into law that it would be worth loosing your hunting rights over--but that is just me. Lets just hope we can keep new laws from happening----
-
You got it Keith--but, there are several other changes that will be on the list along with the baiting proposal. Leonard also said that when there is public input that they have to address it-- He also stated that we need to be vocal if we oppose it--public input is the only way to sway the commission (i know what you are all thinking--whats the use? well, it is like a lot of things, if you don't speak up you have no reason to complain later). Leonard stated that he is neither for or against and he will go with the final decision as law--he has no choice but we do. If you oppose this then speak up--if you support it then speak up--if you don't give a dang what others will do to your hunting then sit back and watch it fall apart in front of your eyes. My biggest concern about this whole deal is we hunters are attacking each other--it isn't the Anti's, it isn't the non hunters it is us against us and that really is scary to me--we may not all agree on hunting styles or tactics but we should at least support the right to have those styles and tactics and not try to take it away from someone else. Keep taking away from all of us and we will have nothing to keep----just my .02 cents

I got the news last night and was so sad that i couldn't sleep. I am so sorry for the Bool's loss-- -
I think it is hear say at best. I also believe that we have a new director that will listen to hunters and will listen to his WM's out in the field. I would hit some of the ADA meetings over the next couple of months and ask a few questions to our game and fish guru--he is usually there every time we meet and he can give you some insight to this rumor.

My Dad has 18 this year--he has not taken the hunter safety class so he is out one point. I will put him in for unit 10 first choice and then another not so coveted unit after that--he is 73 and he can't get around the way he used to--if he doesn't draw in the next two years he will probably not be able to get out there at all--nope, sometimes you have to put in for another unit that isn't so coveted to get a tag. I can tell you this though--the second unit he is getting put in for has a 90" buck in it (or it did after the season last year)and i think i can get him on him at first light if he gets a tag--i hope he doesn't mind sleeping on the ground!! :-) The old man can hit anything he wants out to 500 yards and in this area we should get him with-in 300 at least. Good luck all of you on the draw--i can tell you that killing a monster antelope sticks with you forever and it border lines on the feeling that some sheep hunters talk about. later!!

Face it folks--if the game and fish were really all about money they would simply sell the land where the new offices and all of the shooting facility's are at--i think that land was appraised in the range of about 2.8 billion dollars. So, i guess saying the department is all about money is a little lost here then isn't it. There were no more than 15 General contractors wanting to buy the land out near and on Ben Avery and these people actually went to some of our political figures to try and prove that the firing of firearms was a danger to the Pioneer Park and the people in Anthem--it was a hard fought fight that the game and fish won----think of it guys, they could have stayed where they are, sold the land, and lived happily ever after but instead they stepped up and made a big statement to the builders, and if you all were listening, the sportsman as well. I know the Ben Avery doesn't mean much to the folks south of Phoenix but in the big picture and the big fight it should mean plenty to the entire sports community in this state. Oh, and i was out at the new digs last week to get a few things taken care of and i swear i never saw the people buying these OTC elk tags under duress--no guns to their heads or nothing.

You guys do know that there is a show on the radio that Jim Solomon hosts that has a section called "The Poachers Chronicles". This has been going on for a while and they go live on a national hunting and outdoors show and give out the names of the people caught in a poaching case. Here is a link to the site: http://www.xplortheoutdoors.com/category/poacher-chronicles/ Here is another one that covers several states: http://www.poacherchronicles.com/ Times are changing and people want to know who the offenders are--

Dilemma, how would you deal with this??
TLH replied to fatfootdoc's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Easy--tell your friend to put in for a certain hunt and then you and your kids put in for any hunt but that hunt--he will never know and then you can take your kids and he can take his in another unit. Crappy thing to do but at least you won't have to stick him in the heart. -

I remember this well---he knew exactly what he was doing when he cut the fence that kept the goats from getting out--he knew if he could destroy the bighorn herd he could continue to build his next "Johnson Ranch" This is very good news!!! -
Those in Unit 22 Keep An Eye Out (Thieves)
TLH replied to cjw2222's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
They may have been anti's or greenies. The first group don't want you to hunt and the second group thinks that the quads are ruining mother earth--don't think it was hunters because there are others who think nothing about stealing from hunters to ruin their day. Too bad you didn't get a plate number. -

After reading my Guns and Shooting Online article about the .303 Savage (in which I wrote that factory loaded ammunition in the caliber was no longer available), Clint Huisinga of Stars and Stripes Custom Ammunition wrote to me and pointed out that Stars and Stripes offers brand new .303 Savage factory loads. In fact, Stars and Stripes offers factory loads in many obsolete calibers. Stars and Stripes ammunition is manufactured in the U.S.A. Their street address is 2303 West McNab Road, Suite 4, Pampano Beach, FL 33069 (Telephone: 954-917-1129). I found the above info on a web search--appears the number above has your ammo.

more on Calif. condor issue
TLH replied to billrquimby's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
My friend shot a nice buck on the Bab during the late hunt--it was way in the wilderness area and he was running out of time--he packed out the meat first--hung the head in a tree nd in the morning went back with his bag to collect the guts. When he arrived where his buck was shot there wasn't anything but blood spots and pieces of meat and it was apparent that the coyote's got there before he could get back. He was disappointed as he wanted to gather the guts for the game and fish. He shoots a caliber that there is no copper for--yet, i hope. He said it was the strangest thing he had ever seen because there wasn't any hide, spine, pelvis or anything left! His head must have been just high enough for the yote's not to get it but he said you could see where they attempted get up the ceder tree he had it hung in. He tried--he really wanted to but it didn't happen. I think it is very important to try in every way to use copper on the Bab, after all, we have spent a lot of time and money to bring the condors back and they deserve the chance to succeed. -
It should be a dandy of a game!! Fork em Devils!!
