Bill sorry for the thread high jack buddy!! Good luck filling the other tags!!
-
Bruce i don't disagree with you at all. I had a 42 tag a few years back for a coveted muzzle loader hunt in Dec. We had been watching a big buck out there and that buck was the one i wanted--the opening morning was like a zoo but who would expect less from the USO circus? They had spotters on all 4 sides of the area that held the buck with radios--i couldn't pick them up because they had a radio that was keyed just for them but i could see them through my spotter talking to the guys on the ground with the hunters--they chased that buck all over the place the first day of the hunt but never got him as far as i know. They did kill two bucks that made Boone and Crockett because i saw them on their site. They also used a small chopper with no numbers on it--i called game and fish and reported it but by the time they got out to check on it they were long gone. The only way you can get close to a buck in the flats is to use radios or cell phones or spot them and walk into them and get lucky--or sit water. I would rather sit water myself or spot and stalk using what God gave me to kill a big buck.

That or Game and Fish needs to rethink how many tags they give out in the desert units like 42. They have way to many tags in 42 for the amount of deer that are in that unit currently Agreed 100%

I believe it is just what Bruce (Creed) has written above. I also believe that we need a group that concentrate on the desert units in our state--we have a great group who does a lot of work around the state but we need someone to really work on the units close to Phoenix. It would be cool if we could shut units down in a rotation starting with units around the metro areas--3 year cycles would do wonders for the bucks out there. Get out and kill predators during the shutdown periods and just let the unit grow--not only in numbers but also in age class. I saw the largest buck i have ever seen anywhere in this state in a unit that i can drive to in 10 minutes about 15 years ago--that same year i saw several bucks that would have made anyone happy. Th genes are here for world class bucks but we just don't let the bucks grow. I am not a fan of antler restriction as i lived that rule back when i first started hunting--you could not shoot a spike when i was a kid but because people shoot when they see bone there were a lot of baby bucks laying around dead. I agree that there are way too many tags out there but i also hear every year how bad the department does because someone doesn't get a tag--we can't have it both ways folks we will have to sit out a year or two if we want to see the deer herds grow. Bruce talks about electronics but you can't use them if you can't see them--my hunting success has gone through the roof since i learned how to glass with my 15's and the folks i talk to while hunting who say they never see anything are the one's that do not glass. the long distance shooting has caused a lot of deer to die that would have not been shot without the use of big glass and long range rifles so where do we stop? I watched an awesome video on here that shows shots that guys that don't have that equipment or know how to shoot would never take--where do we stop? Maybe we should all go back to the lever action 30-30 and learn how to get close again?? Now i am not saying hunting should be changed but i am trying to show why there are less deer now (not including the drought) than there has been in the past. Remember when you shot a buck at 250 yards and you were considered a sniper in your camp? Now 500 yards is nothing for a guy that knows how to shoot.

Stick it in the ground for about 2 weeks--preferably close to an ant hill--pull it out of the ground and dust it off. If there are any spots that have anything left on it i would be surprised. Just make sure you have it in a place the yotes and critters won't run off with it.

Yes they are and you know you will see one if you don't have a tag!! LOL!

OK all here we go again--we have a youth camp in 23 South each year (now going on 3 years) and i would like to invite all of you who would like to come up either to help glass help cook or just hang out. If any of your kids have that tag i would like to see them up there. We actually do very well up there and last year we had a 130" class 3x3 mulie and 90" Coues shot along with three other bucks. Here is the link to my site to get the info you need to get to the camp. It is on Oct. 8th, 9th, and 10th. Thanks! http://www.thearizonahunter.com/forum/view...;p=42197#p42197

question on how to best preserve meat in the field
TLH replied to JLW's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I think the most important thing is to get the meat off of the bone--if an animal is going to spoil it is going to be closest to the bone and if you bone it that will let a lot of the heat out of the meat. Second--if you can hang it over night in pieces it will cool down very well even in Oct. i have noticed that the temps will start dropping into the high 50's or low 60's and that the meat will cool very nicely--the trick is to get it loaded and start your trek well before the sun comes up. If you stack the meat in your pack and head back to your truck and it takes 3 hours you will lose some of the meat you have--best way we have packed it out is to wrap it in those ultimate game bags and separate the meat and strap it to your pack away from each other--this keeps the wind circulating on the meat as you walk and will contain some of the coolness. -
I have used Dave Albright (spelling) and he does excellent work and he is in the valley--his company is called Whitecloud gun smithing. Give him a try DB you won't be disappointed. White Cloud Custom Gunsmithing 18007 N 69th Avenue Glendale, AZ 85308-8017 map Phone:(602) 439-3389

Brian, That was very good of you to explain that part of the draw to us all. I think most cases we as humans make mistakes and that puts all of us in that category. The son in law pulled a cow tag lat year for archery but only applied for bull archery tags--the department told him that his number was not one that would have allowed him to be drawn for the bull tags so they offered him to send the tag back or keep it. He kept it. The only concern i have is for the person who may have drawn the tag that my son in law got--that means someone out there sat at home because this mistake was made--that is the only part that makes the mistake bad. Thanks for responding! Terry

Go Marshall! Nice editorial on 1070
TLH replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Marshall; nice job buddy!! It has a lot more teeth when a LEGAL IMMIGRANT writes about the law now doesn't it? -
I know that guy too Slim i believe he borrowed a .375RUM from a guy to kill his Buff!! I bet he will be on here soon to talk about it too!!
-
Stanley i sure hope you guys draw a tag or two!! When you do have the results and they are positive get with me and i will let you know where to go in that area. Good luck buddy!!!
-
Stanley, You know I respect what you have to say but like you said I wasn't there and neither were you. I have the right to speak my mind in this country and that is what I did. I do not care if anyone agrees or disagrees with me when I speak my mind because it is how "I" feel about something. Also I believe an animal is an animal no matter domesticated or wild so when they state no animals were harmed then they for some reason have taken the bear out of the animal kingdom. I still think they took the easy way out but I am open to a WM explaining why they killed the bear if they want to write me or post on this site. Do you think it would have been the same if a male Mexican Grey Wolf wondered into town?? I don't!
-
Really?? I am pretty sure the bear was an animal. Come on guys and gals--it was a bear in the city that didn't attack anyone, didn't act aggressive and was young in his adult life. This bear looked perfectly healthy and i doubt he would return if they would have relocated him. I thought the department had a system in place that allowed the bear to make one mistake before he/she was put down--sounds to me like the game and fish took the easy way out on this one. As for the mauling of the little girl Chris--the group up there knew that there were bears in the area--they did not abide by the laws of living in bear country and the little girl got mauled because she probably went to her tent with peanut butter on her lips--the law suit was BS and there was no reason the state should have paid for that--sure i feel bad for the girl but come on we all know if you play in bear country you better play by the rules. Lark, i agree with you on this--this should have never happened. If the game and fish comes back and says the bear had some kind of problem that was causing him to act the way he was then i may be able to figure it out but until then i think it was wrong!

News channel 3 stated that it costs 10 Billion and yes that is Billion with B in California each year to take care of the illegals they have there. And in California illegals can be many different types of illegals not just Mexicans. 10 Billion!! Holy crap how many border patrol can we hire for that each year?? How many teachers could we hire?? How many people can we put to work with that money?? 10 Billion is costing 10 times that by the time you understand the repercussions. I would be very interested to hear what the amount is here in AZ--

This makes me sick--this is why it is always the race card, and this ain't photoshopped! http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local-beat/...e-92945969.html -
The Cow Decoys do work very well. This decoy is called the Zebu and i used it to get my client from a mile to 46 yards to shoot his buck. The trick is move slow like a cow and just do what a cow would do. Oh, you need to be down wind from the antelope too. This decoy works on everything--elk, deer, coyote's you name it. It has a shoot through hole in the middle of the body and a rifle rest if you are hunting with a rifle. If you are by yourself it has Velcro straps that you can strap your bow to. Good luck!!!

Get a map and find the public land--it is there but there are small pockets. Make sure you get maps from the BLM and the state, and national Forest. If a landowner try's to make you leave you will have the maps to show you are on public land. The good thing about 17B is that it is posted but it could be posted where public is at so that is why you need maps.
