    2 NM bulls down

Good Job Derek! Did better than us. Super hot and dry where we were. Only one morning did the elk not go to their beds before sunrise. I had a chance at one, coming in hot, but circled down wind and busted me. Congrats again! jeff

    Coues' Poses

I always have prefered semi-sneak poses. In my opinion a turn is a MUST! To me a straight ahead look just looks unnatural and a turn either way just gives the mount a little more life. I agree that full sneak often look odd and I think it takes the right deer and a taxi that really knows how ear and eye placement need to look to pull it off.

    Tree Stand Hunting

Yup definately wear safety gear! Good book or Ipod is a good help to pass the time, for food i usually take a sandwich or liccorice, pop-tarts, things that are soft. I always take them out of the original packaging and put them in a zip-lock bag so they are not so noisy to open. Tree hooks are a must so you can hang your backpack and binos and such. I hang my backpack a little higher than me so I can use my Camelback throughout the day. One of the radial arm type bow hooks is good to hang your bow on to reduce movement when getting your bow. I am with Huntn coues about the whole urination issue. I have peed right out of the stand and had deer walk right up to it, smell, and go about there business. One thing about that though is that as hard as it is to not drink coffee on the way to the stand I really try not to. I think if you stick with just water from the night before on then urine is urine. Its when you get all that funky stuff like coffee and soda going on that sets them off. This year, if I sit a stand I am going to try one of those 5 Hour Energy drinks cause there is just something about a tree swaying in the wind that makes my eyes heavy. jeff

    What is this???

Hey man. Like you said on your website I think the wolf enclosure is probably spot on.....just my opinion. When I first read your post I had forgotten you were scouting AZ and when you said those were pics of unit 27 I thought to myself....I have been down to Unit 27 and i have NEVER seen country like that down there Good luck on your hunt......to bad about your camera that is crazy! I have only had 1 stolen here in NM and I almost hate to use the word stole cause I really think some hotshots picked it up cause a fire burned right through where i had it set up. jeff

    Left Over Tags for NM

I would be willing to bet there will be some. Late July early August is when they usually post whats available. All I have ever seen is some archery tags for deer and maybe a couple of muzzy tags for deer. Don't think I have ever seen any elk tags. jeff

    Thompson Center ProHunter

I have a T/C ProHunter that I am considering selling. Was just wanting to see if anybody on here is looking for one before I get serious and try to sell it somewhere else. It currently has a 12 gauge turkey barrel on it. I would be willing to either sell the frame and barrel together or seperately. I only have shot about 8 shells through the turkey barrel, but it was used when I bought it. I had a .243 barrel for it for a while and put about a box of shells through it. (no longer have .243 barrel). Just saying that the frame itself has had very little use on it. Frame is in good shape with a few minor scratches and normal wear marks. This is the ProHunter so it has the Flex Tech stock and forend as well as the swing hammer. PM me if you are interested and I can send pics and we can talk price. jeff

    Thompson Center ProHunter

Did I scare everyone off when I posted prices?? I have done alot of research on TC stuff and these prices are very average for the stuff I have. The 12 gauge barrel might even be a little low since I am including a red dot scope. Brand new this turkey barrel goes for close to $400. I will wait till Monday, as I was hoping to make a donation to cw.com if I sold it here, but if I still have them then I will need to post them on another website. Jeff

    Thompson Center ProHunter

K since there is some interest I am wanting $315 for the frame and $250 for the barrel. The barrel has a BSA Red Dot scope on it. I do have the original fiber optic sights, not sure if I have the screws or not though. You could take the butt stock off and put a pistol handle on it, but it is registered as a long rifle so I am not sure on the legalities of doing that. jeff

    Recurve

PSEps..... I would definately take up GILAMAN on his deal on the Black Widow if it is in your price range. I bought my BW from him a few years ago and couldn't be happier with it. He takes excellent care of his equipment and I can tell you that you will not have to worry about twisted limbs, abuse, etc. His arrows are top notch as well! If you have further questions he is the person you should contact, I am sure he would be more than happy to help out. One word of caution though........traditional hunting/shooting is VERY addictive jeff
  22. Everyone should be aware that communities and counties around NM are pushing to ban trapping on public lands. The City Council of the Town of Silver City passed a resolution back in February supporting the banning of trapping on public lands. I believe that this item was "snuck" in at the last minute because there was no one there in opposition and the only person who was there to support it was the guy that wrote it. The Grant County Commission was to take a vote on a resolution for the same proposal and ended up tableing the vote due to the numerous ranchers and trappers that showed up in opposition of the resolution. This is something that we should all watch pretty closely. jeff

    Recurve

Hey man I shoot a Black Widow Recurve at about 52 lbs at 26". Arrows are custom Cedar arrows made by a couple of guys here locally in Silver City. For broadheads I use Zwickey 100 grain 2 blade glue ons. Black Widows are considered to be top of the line by many in the traditional shooting community, but they definately are costly. For an "average" bow you are looking at probably around $800 with upgrades going up from there. Bear Bows are usually a pretty good bet for a mid-range priced bows as well as others. My advice is to buy new, but if you have a chance to buy a used bow I would find someone who really knows traditional gear and have them check it out very closely. There are many things to look out for on a used bow including hair line cracks, twisted limbs, etc. If you have some specific questions, PM me and I will get you in contact with some local guys who are experts when it comes to traditional gear. jeff
  24. Awesome info Ben! Thanks for giving us the heads up. We all need to stay vigilant on these issues and try to keep everyone posted on the latest! Thanks again jeff
  25. No basically a resolution is something the council writes up showing support (or opposition) for something that is happening on bigger level. They town council is basically supporting the idea of banning trapping on public lands, they don't have the authority to actually try to manage it.
