The early hunter gets the bird!

We found where the birds were roosting! There is a handfull of huge pines and each has about 2" deap of turkey droppings under the trees! I have never seen roosts that were used so much!!! Younghunter and I hung out there in the evening but aparently they don't hang there every night. And if we ever found them there in the morning again we maped out a spot that we could sneek right up to the spot where they land after comming out of the roost! Oh well, just more antisipation for next year! Thanks for the comments! And thanks for letting me tag along guys! Lance

The early hunter gets the bird!

He had a 9 1/4" beard and big spurs! Congrats Jake! Younghunter did show up on Wednesday and we got into some good action with several birds but were not able to close the deal. But I'll let him tell that story if he wants.

The early hunter gets the bird!

After the tom stuck his head up and lowered his fan ever so nicely for us. This is when Jake touched off the trigger I swear the report of the shotgun echoed for 30 seconds or more!

    Nice!
  12. Neat pictures! Thanks for sharing. Very unique, I have never seen someone take that approach for placing a camera! Where do you find a $58. digital camera???? Lance
  13. Not a cat. Cats make a scratch in the dirt. Josh/GRONG put some pictures of cat scratches on this sight somewhere a while back. Dogs like to go on top of things like that. What is in it? Lance

    coyotes

Add in some coyote howls or whines or whimpers. Use other calls other than just the rabbit. Curiosity calls and not just food calls. Lance

    Rangefinders

You may want to only shoot out to 300 or 400 yards but it is nice to know that he is 852 or 980 so you know how much closer you need to get. You can range closer ridges or points and subtract the difference. I'm looking to upgrade myself. Lance

    southern arizona

It is sooo unsafe! Stay out of my spot, I meen that border country Actually, the fact that you carry an "Ultramag" should keep you safe! I just fire my 7mm RUM off early in the morning when everything is still, and it pritty much clears the unit of illegal activity! Certain areas have alot of traffic. Some areas don't have any. Don't put your tent or blind next to a 3 foot wide trail in a big saddle and thats half the battle! I do carry a side arm along with that rifle, but that is more of just a comfort for my mind sort of thing. I am only 6'4" 250# so you can see why I need the extra comfort Lance

    coyotes

OH YEAh! I have been calling coyotes sence I was ten years old! My dad is an old pro trapper from back in the day and tought me alot about coyotes ever sence I could walk! You could say I was raised on em! The first day my dad took me calling when I was ten I shot my first coyote with his open sight 22. My dad went to go get the truck and I took off to track the coyote that ran off after I shot it. I found him dead in his tracks after about 200 yards. That moment created a monster! By the time I was twelve I couldn't remember how many coyotes I had shot We hunt alot around Flag! But know this, there are alot of call shy dogs around Flag!!!!! If you are willing to go at least 40 min to an hour from town (depending on the direction) you can get into some good hunting. It's all about location and finding dogs that are not call shy. Summer dogs are not as hungry and can be harder to call, so you have to appeal to other things along with their stomach. Where abouts are you from? Lance

    Strutting!

When are you comming? I'v been dying to get out in 8 and kill some of the birds I'v scouted out. My neice has a youth tag for 8 but it doesn't look like she is going to go "Tines" on here, has an 8 tag also. He keeps saying he's going to show but hasn't shown yet I'm sure he won't mind if you come and kill his bird for him. He needs to be shot cuz he's gitten old fat and lazy, and if he aint gona show then he can't complain if we shoot his bird

    elk calling

Can always tell when someones got a Hoochie. eeea eeea eeea eeea Realy, for the beginner or someone that doesn't care to much about the size of bull. 1- Find where the bulls are talking. 2- Find the two bulls that are calling the closest or realy close to eachother. 3- Ignore all other elk and get close to the two bulls. One of them is likely an agressive satellite bull and will come to your calls easer than most. WARNING! - Satellite bulls in the state of AZ are not always small and may humble your soul Good luck! Fiberglass Canoe

I'm looking for a canoe. I don't know if I like the shallow design or not? Why are you selling it? Is it tipsy? I would be using it for lots of kids and don't know if the shallow type would be my first choice? Anyone have any thoughts on the subject? Lance

    Our turkey hunt recap!

OK, I finally got the pictures off of the cameras. Some of you were wanting to hear the rundown on our NM hunt. That was before everyone else posted shuch awesome pictures and stories Any way, hope you enjoy this one. First day.... Wind blew like mad all day untill dark. We didn't here and birds in the morning and pritty much counted it as scouting. In the evening we were sneaking logging roads and walked up on two hens. a little latter we walked up on a tom and a hen. My buddy Ryan saw the tom and chose to duck behind the hill enstead of shoot him. He was loaded with 5 shot and figured it was too far. They were only 45 yards and within plenty of range for my "T" shot. I teased him about it and we went on. We called our way up a steep ridge into a burn where we heard some hens in between wind gusts. We walked right up on a tom at 30 yards. I was behind Ryan and did not see the bird. We were busey climbing over all the dead logs in the burn while trying to get up that steep slope. I was telling Ryan how I was trying to picture myself like a squirrel running down the lenth of the logs but the only immage in my head was a cloged artery! I looked up to see him shushing me while doing a ballancing act on a bouncy little log about 2 1/2 feet in the air, all the while trying to get a beed on the tom that was taking flight in front of him. Neadless to say he missed and the shot knocked him off the log tumbleing him down the hill. The whole sight was quite funny and is certainly why I forgot to take the saftey off when I tried my hand at the flying bird. I about bent my trigger trying to make my gun go off before Ryans mass of tumbling turkey hunter reached my posision! The turkey flew away without a scratch and amazingly enough neather Ryan or myself had a scratch either! We got back to the quads right at dark, the wind settled for a bit and we were able to hear three birds gobbling from there roost! Day two.... found us sitting in the pre dawn light on a logging road about 150 yards above a gobbling tom with the decoys out! We figured from the tracks on the road that he might naturally like to strut there!
