There are elk in all the OTC areas. They are all tough hunts. The Game and Fish says that the general public runs about a 1% success rate on these hunts. This means you need to scout and work your tail off MORE THAN 99% of the other hunters. They are Not typical type elk hunts by any means. I'd stick with a rifle to make the best of any Elk sighting you might have.

End of the line photo. I didn't get to trap as much this year, but I was busy guiding other hunters so that's OK. :) These are most of the cats I kept. Sold three others for taxidermy. Also missing from this picture are lots of badgers, fox, skunks and the rest of my coyotes. For my time spent, it was well worth it! Here is a big unit 9 buck I found a couple days ago.

It seems like this has become a popular internet subject these days. Personally, I don't think you'll notice any difference. I hunt the extreme high and low elevations of Arizona each year with my own tags and with clients. Out of literally thousands of extreme elevation changes over the years, I've personally never noticed any difference. And for sure nothing worth adjusting sights over. Not even in the old days with slower bows. I'm not saying the comments above are wrong or anything like that. I'm just saying that in my personal experience with hunting I've just never noticed it. Good luck on your hunt! Are you coming after Coues deer or Mule deer? Or an area with both?

Cool experience to be that close to it. Yeah, Cows bugle all the time for lots of different reasons. Just like big bulls make cow chirps and mews. They all have the same tools for talking. Voices vary just like people, some cows are really good at it and have quite impressive bugles and others are kinda week.

The Peaks Area can be a fantastic hunt! Along with many cow tags, these are the last 4 bulls we have taken there. You must be willing to hunt hard and ready and willing to pack Elk out of anywhere! Not being willing or not having the means to go the extra miles and then pack out those extra miles is what keeps people from filling their tags in this unit. Prepare in every way for back country wilderness hunting so your hands aren't tied and you'll have a trophy hunt! Lance

7E is one of my home town units. Grew up hunting it as a kid, know every inch of it, and continue to hunt it! Where your at is good for archery deer, just be willing to work harder than the average road hunter and you'll do fine. Apply that to your elk hunt also! For your late cow hunt I'd look further north as the White Horse Hills area will likely be full of snow. Find places to glass the low country and you can't go wrong no matter the weather. Often elk hair will turn very white this time of year as it dies and falls out to make room for the summer coat. Especially bulls. Could have been some version of that?

Thank you! On the OTC elk we usually have 100% kill success and always have 100% opportunity. If some one didn't get one it's cause they missed or even missed several times.
