I've Seen Loads Of Dead Buffalo Carcuses Up There And Never Have I Seen Buffalo Care Or Blink An Eye At A Carcus. Ive Seen Them Feed Right Next To, Step Right Over Or Walk Around Them Without A Care. EveN Fresh Ones And Even The Nastiest Stinky Ones.TheyJust Don't Seem To Care. Its Odd, But They Don't. We Have Actually Killed Very Few Off Of Salt. I Think Only Two Before This One Were Off Of Salt. We Usually hunt Them Down. we Did A Lil Bit Of Both On Brents Hunt. We Really Wanted To Get It On Film And that Was A Good Way To Do It With A Bow.

  3. As for the bull with hard horns. Likely a leftover that didn't shed or rub or rut, so Still white.<br />If it was this years rubbed early he would stain with blood and the tips would be a mess. I've seen that before.<br /><br />As far as all the bugling this time of year, Its mostly Cows Bugling. I see it all the time every year. Go look at them next time, its pretty cool!<br /><br />Those horns don't look cut off to me. That's just the natural pedestal. I find those all the time. I've seen plenty of cut off ones too. That's just the way it looks.<br /><br />Lance

  8. Awesome Pictures! And Haha! ThE Lady Hunter One, The One That Says ShaRlot Hall With dead Deer. Look At It Closely... That Velvet Deer In The Snow. Clearly That Dried Up Face And Ears Have Been Dead For A Long Time Before The Snow Got There. AnD It Doesn't Have A Body So That's Why The Dress Is Covering Up That Area.Lol The Dress That Hasn't Walked Anywhere In The Snow Except To Step Up To Pose For The Picture. Cool Picture, But Clearly Poised With A Long Dead Deer Head.

  9. I was contacted by Brady who had drawn a Population Management buffalo tag for unit 5A and 5B through the hunter pool draw. Brady wasnt interested in a typical Ramond Ranch hunt where you are accompanied by the Ranch Game and Fish warden and told what animal to shoot. But Brady had learned that the buffalo they wanted taken out were bulls that roamed free off of the ranch and were seldom seen throughout miles of country.

This interested Brady and this interested me as well! There were rumors of old bulls that had been roaming free and wild for many years and the chance of a trophy and more importantaly the chance of a real trophy adventure!!!

When Brady contacted me it was 2 days before his hunt was to start. I got to work right away and started scouting and gathering every bit of information I could from the Game and Fish, local ranchers and past hunters.

Soon I knew where to start and the type of targets we were after. There were for sure at least 8 bulls roaming as free and wild as they please. These bulls were last seen at least 15-20 miles from the ranch and one had been seen alone. We were very interested in the lone bull and wanted to see what kind of bull he was.

There was also the main herd of 45 cows, calves and young bulls that were much easier to find. And although they spent most of their time on the ranch they too roamed free as they pleased and these pictures of the herd were taken a couple miles outside the ranch.

    post-669-0-53543200-1370311809_thumb.jpg

I met with Brady the evening before the hunt and showed him the herd of cows to get his blood flowing! On day one we knew the area the herd of bulls were in but we decided to look for the loaner bull first. Another bull was taken from the group of bulls but wasn't a bull we were interested in. This spooked the group and they left the country. We knew where their tracks led but we wanted to continue to look for the mysterious loan bull just in case he was bigger, nothing else was found that day.

As we continued to look the next day we found where the other bulls had gone. They had moved about 20 miles! We stalked in on them and looked them over carefully. We decided that the biggest bull in the group was a great bull and had bigger horns than the other bull that was taken.

    post-669-0-32611500-1370312034_thumb.jpgpost-669-0-02953200-1370312248_thumb.jpgpost-669-0-77544500-1370312084_thumb.jpg

On the hunt before, a hunter had taken a bull out of the herd and said that there was a bull bigger than the one he shot still in the herd. We thought this might be the loan bull that was missing. We had a month to hunt and I told Brady we should pass on this bull and since we were the only hunters we had time to look for the other bull while keeping this good bull in our back pocket. So we left them and continued to to look.

    post-669-0-66361300-1370313770_thumb.jpgpost-669-0-97105600-1370313725_thumb.jpgpost-669-0-09866700-1370311879_thumb.jpg

As we continued to look we were able to keep track of the herd of bulls movements.

We talked to Steve, the warden, on the evening of the third day and he informed us of two things that made up our mind. Steve had gotten a close look at the bulls shortly after we did and he said that the bigger bull in the herd was bigger than the one the other hunter had taken on the hunt before. This meant that the bull we had passed up was probably the biggest bull left. But we were still going to keep him in our back pocket because we had a month to ourselves. But then Steve told us that they were likely going to issue another tag to start the next Friday..... so all of a sudden we didn't have time to keep this bull in our back pocket but it seemed that he was the bigger bull we were looking for anyway. So with that info Brady and I decided that he would be our target bull and the hunt was on!

    post-669-0-31272800-1370312118_thumb.jpg

Day 4 started with covering ground and glassing and trying to cut tracks. Late in the morning we finally cut the tracks of the herd of six bulls. We grabbed our gear and began the tracking job. We had tracked them for about a mile and found where they had spent the night. We continued on their trail and after a while I discovered that they had looped downwind of us and had spooked and left the country without us even knowing. It was pretty awesome hunting these wild bulls that were not going to make it easy!

    post-669-0-09999100-1370313803_thumb.jpg

I was familiar with the movement of buffalo in that country so we took a short cut and found their tracks again! We continued to circle and cut their tracks over and over throughout the day and several hours of tracking and about 9-10 miles later we finally caught up to them! At this point they were about 30 miles from where they had started the first day! It was truly turning into an awesome and epic free ranging and wild hunt!!

    post-669-0-16501000-1370313574_thumb.jpgpost-669-0-34277000-1370312454_thumb.jpgpost-669-0-10949000-1370313833_thumb.jpg

I glassed them up out in front of us way out in the flat cedar pushes. There wasn't much cover so a careful stalk was made into about 230 yards. At this point most of the bulls were laying down resting. After a while they all got up to feed again and I looked them over carefully to find the one we wanted. The bull was located and the video was running while Brady placed 3 great shots in his chest from my 7MM RUM and his big once in a lifetime Arizona buffalo was down!

    post-669-0-85956500-1370312617_thumb.jpgpost-669-0-05783700-1370312744_thumb.jpgpost-669-0-03807500-1370312791_thumb.jpgpost-669-0-44369600-1370312871_thumb.jpgpost-669-0-26831000-1370313300_thumb.jpg

We took lots of pictures and then we got to cutting! It took Brady and I two-hours and 20-min to cut the bull up and we were very blessed to be able to drive the truck right to him!

    post-669-0-52351500-1370314007_thumb.jpgpost-669-0-01615800-1370313975_thumb.jpgpost-669-0-40300600-1370314042_thumb.jpg

This hunt turned out to be an awesome hunting adventure and everything we hoped a free range hunt would be! We hunted hard all day every day and tracked bulls over 30 miles of country and covered many many miles more! It was truly an epic hunt with highs and lows and everything in between!

Thank you Brady for allowing TLO to be a part of your once in a lifetime adventure!

  10. TLO Was Blessed to be able to accompany Stan during his Spring Buffalo hunt on Arizona's North Kaibab. On his second day of hunting we tracked down this Big bull with another one. After 3 miles of zig zagging through big canyons we jumped them in a thicket at 30 yards!!!!! I got them stopped at about 120 yards out and Stan's first shot was a perfect double lung! But the bull kept getting up and needed several more shots to keep him down! It was really exciting and nerve racking! Stan's bull was a huge old B&C bull!! And after 6 big rounds from the 338 the big old bull prooved he was the man of the woods!!! With two broken leggs he showed his sheer strangth by getting back up twice and muscling his way toward the park line!!! I tried to stay calm... but talk about heart pounding excitement that will make me grow old fast!!!! My hats off to this impressive 2000 lb mass of muscle and determination!!! A final shot to the back of the head put him down for good 23 yards from the park line!!!!!!

Stan and I got to work on the bull while My brother Blair hiked back to get a quad. By the time Blair got back I had it all cut up and ready to go.

We were thankful that It was a beautiful day with beautiful weather unlike the day before. Another beautiful bull and loads of priceless memories!

Thank you Stan for choosing TLO to make those memories with you! Congrats again on your monster bull!

We were very blessed to be able to be a part of so many Mule deer hunts in 2012! What is really neat is that these are nice bucks from all over the state with all different kinds of tags! Some had difficult draw odds and some had easy draw odds and others were Over The Counter Tags!
I hope you enjoy the pictures!!! We sure enjoyed taking them!
Our TLO year started out in January with Archery bucks in the RUT!  First up was 15 year old TLO Hunter, Chase with this nice P&Y 4x4! This was his first archery buck! Way to go bud!
    Jake+1.png

Next up was TLO Guide, Jake with his awesome archery 4x4 desert mule deer from Southern AZ! Over The Counter archery tags!!

    Jake+2.png
That finished up our January and we began scouting for the next season. Check out this young trashy 3 horned velvet buck! I took this picture while doing some early summer scouting in the North Kaibab!

First up For the Aug/Sep Archery hunt was my 16 year old son, TLO's Ty Crowther, with his first archery buck that he took near Flagstaff on opening morning! OTC Archery tag!

A nice buck with double cheaters.
Next up was TLO's Ben with his great P&Y 4x5 archey buck from here in Northern AZ! OTC Archery tag!

Misty Kaibab Meadows full of deer. And a bachelor herd of bucks in the timber.
    IMG_0654.JPG
Next up My wife, Carrie and I had Drawn Archery deer tags for the Kaibab.
The hunt was rough this year when it came to mature bucks. But we worked extra hard at it and we found several.
    IMG_1400.JPG
Carrie passed up a dozen or more bucks holding out for something big. She missed a shot on a big 4x4 but was still passing up bucks on her last day. Late in the hunt on the last day she decided to fill her tag and redeemed herself with a perfect shot on this young buck. This is Carrie's second archery mule deer and we had a great time on the hunt!
    Carrie+1.png

    Carrie+2.png
    IMG_1407.JPG
After Carrie was done it was my turn to try to get  a nice buck with the remainder of the hunt. The bladed 3x4 buck below is a buck I videoed after I drew my bow on him at 28 yards and elected to pass. The buck he was hanging out with was a beast and I had two close encounters with him during my hunt but never loosed an arrrow.
    IMG_1405.JPG
I passed up all three of these bucks below at different times during my hunt. This is a pre-season trail camera picture. I think I passed up 11 bucks the first day and 9 the second. Every day after that I passed on 4-5 bucks a day. Mostly -2 year old buck with the ocasional 3-4 year old buck like the three in the picture below.
    Tcam+1.png
    IMG_1404.JPG
The tall buck below was a buck we hunted for but never had a good chance at.
    Tcam+Droopy.png
    HUNT0019.JPG
During my hunt I drew my bow on a handful of big bucks that I wanted to shoot, but for one reason or another I was never able to loose an arrow.  The trail camera picture of the buck above is a heavy 5x4. The last evening of my hunt I went looking for him and his much bigger buddy. I found the 4x5 and he came by me at 45 yards and was getting closer but never presented a shot before he winded me. I watched and passed a couple of other small bucks as they fed past within easy bow range right at dark but  I ended the Kaibab hunt without filling my tag. But it was a great time as usual! Then it was back to Flagstaff to help the crew hunt for the Big 5x buck we called "Cinco"!
    Cinco+1.png
These are pictures off of some video that Ben got of Cinco before the season.
We hunted him last year and several people came close. We were very excited to see him show up again this year!! This year he was bigger and had a little extra 6th point on one side.

    IMG_1418.JPG

After the archery hunts the bucks turned hard horned and the smell of rifle season was in the air!
IMG_1421.JPGFirst up for rifle season was TLO hunter, Larry for his "Champ Hunt" in the Kaibab! I pushed a herd of bucks by Larry and he took this nice tall 4x4 on his first day with a 20 yard shot! Then we headed back to Flagstaff where we helped Larry's granddaughter, 10 year old Elise, take her first deer on the unit 7 Junior hunt. Way to get it done girl!Larry+1.png
Smart+1.pngKaibab+moon.pngThen it was back to the Kaibab for the General Oct rifle hunt with my 14 year old son Weston and TLO hunter Scott! Scott wasn't holding out for a monster and we were ok with that because it was an off year for the Kaibab. We had him pass up a few dozen bucks anyway and then let him take this great buck! We had to run about a half mile around a mountain to get in front of some bucks that we had jumped. I knew their escape route and we cut them off just in time. Way to get it done Scott! This is Scott's 13th big game animal with TLO!
    Scott+2.png
    Scott+1.png
Scott.pngAfter Scott it was Weston's turn. But first Weston and I picked up another hunter. Young Jeffery had a tag and only had one day to hunt with us So the first decent buck we could find was going down! We split up and covered some country. After a while Weston called me on the radio and said he had a tall crab clawed 4pt. I mentioned to Jeffery and he was all for it! So we made the trip over to the canyon across from Weston and found the buck in his bed. Jeffery made a great shot and finished his one day hunt with TLO.
    Jefery+1.png
    Jefery+2.png
After that it was finally Weston's turn! The full moon was out all week and making the hunting even tougher. But it did make for some nice pictures.

    Weston+rub.png
    Weston+2.png
We worked hard and Weston passed up lots of nice bucks during his time. But he was needing to get back to school so we lowered our standards. After another morning of passing several little bucks and a couple of nice young 3 and 4pt bucks we jumped this buck out of a draw and Weston let him have it with the 7mmRUM to take his first mule deer! We had a great time and in just a few short days Weston was able to help 2 other hunters fill their tags and then take his own buck! How fun is that!
    Weston+1.png

    IMG_1426.JPG

Next up was young hunter Josh. TLO's Ty and Weston Crowther were able to help Josh take this great buck on Josh's General Rifle Hunt in unit 7! Josh made a great shot as the buck tried to get away up the mountain.

    Josh+3.pngJosh+1.pngJosh+2.pngBecky+4.png
Next up was  Becky Crowther. Her husband TLO guide Blair took her on her first deer hunt in unit 13! She drew the tag on her first time applying for deer!! It was a tough year on the Strip and when they found this massive old unique buck, Becky just couldn't pass him up! "Couldn't pass the mass" is what she said. :)
    Becky+1.png

With a basic 3pt frame this buck still scored in the mid 160's and had over 43" of mass! Not bad for a first buck Becky!

Becky+3.pngSome of those mass measurements are over 7"! Pictures just don't do this unique buck justice.Becky+2.png
    Ron+S+1.png
Next up was TLO hunter Ron with his Muzzleloader hunt in Southern AZ's unit 35! Ron was wanting to take a nice Desert Mule deer to complete his personal deer slam! We had a lot of great helpers on this hunt and after a few days of hard hunting TLO guide Jake found this awesome old 4x6 non typical! They hunted him down and Ron got the job done! Congrats on finishing your deer slam with a great desert buck Ron!
    Ron+S+2.png

    Ron+S+3.png
Beded+deer+1.pngNext up we had hunters Dan and Ron on their December hunt in unit 7. First up was Ron. We found, glassed up and passed several bucks with Ron looking for that upper age class of buck. These pictures are of some of the ones we saw during that hunt.

Dan made it up for his hunt a few days after Ron had filled his tag with the big 3pt. These are pictures of Dan's buck before we got him.

  14. Thank you for all the kind words every one. It was a great time and had a lot of fun doing it! Dern Cold, but lots of fun! ;)

PS. There are not many products out there that can proove their worth to me and still hold up to what I put them through each year. So please Note that this is my own promotion of this product and no one put me up to this. I love it!

I wanted to put a plug in for the Loc Jaw / Rifle Rails system by Aristotle Engineering! We used it on both of these deer hunts and we use it all the time, on lots of different hunts throughout each year! It Really is Awesome and tough and hunter friendly! I'm realy tough on gear and I would recomend this to everyone! Easy to install, tough as nails, small enough that you don't even know its there and so easy to use in every hunting situation! And Easy to use in Every situation means a lot to me!
