Well the taxi did say he would send it to the tannery, but he didnt feel too good about it. He said the furr around the head ws starting to slip quite a bit. worst place i guss. Back to the advice on the packing out of the bear. It was A.m. We skinned out the bear but did not cape him till we got back to the truck. On the plastic bags, we did however roll up the hide and wrap it in a bag for the packout. Thats probably where i went wrong. when we got it in the ice I left it in the bag to keep the h2o off the fur, i heard that was bad also. We were back to gilbert by noon. Only six hours, however it was 111 that day. Well i guess i learned a hard lesson. All the other bears weve taken have had no problem doing in the same manner. However they were never in his temperature. Thats early hunting for you i guess. Hopefully the tannery has some good news. O Well Thanks guys good luck next weekend

well i got the call today that all trophy hunters hate to get after successfully scouting an animal and harvisting him after a long hard hunt. I was told today that the hide off the bear i took will not be salvagable. We shot him at 6:15 am and had him caped and on ice by 8:30 after the long hike out with the 130 lb head and hide and 260lbs of bonned meat. We made the 4 mile trip out as fast as we could, but i guess it wasn't fast enough. I feel bad aboout the whole thing. this is the earliest in the year i have killed a bear, and i will never hunt the early season again. It is a shame to loose a bear like that. This guy lived and fed in an area that you could not get him out any quicker than we did. It will be hard to kill another bear of that caliber again. Now the only memory of the hunt will be the skull and pics. O well. Thanks g@f for makeing the season so early

Yea thts what i wanted, but with the front legs up on the rock. will give the Wellers a call. Thanks for the info, mount looks great. OW yours is nice also. I don't think i want a full body, it takes up too much room in my office. Thanks for the photos.
-
Thanks for the input. I think i may have a half body mount from mid section foreword with the front paws on a rock? I havn't seen anything like this, but have been old it looks good. Anyone have anything like this, or have seen that type of mount. thanks
-
My feelings EXACTLY. Nice bear Elkman. You having a rug made? I havn't decided on what im going to do with the bear. I have toyed with idea of having half body mount with front legs on a rock, rug, shoulder. What do you guys suggest. Anyone have any pics of some nice bear mounts they could share. Thanks for all the compliments. Josh

Well i got a bear finally. After a long hunt for three days i connected today with a nice boar. I will post pics this evening if i can figure it out. I think he will go 19-20". He was about three miles away when i saw him eating some pears. We made the mad dash up to within range. I sat up for the shot which was 390 yards. I squeezed the shot and connected. the bear dropped in his tracks. We then had to skin and bone the boar and pack him out, it seemed like 10 miles, to top it off it was 100 degrees. WOW. We seen a total of 8 bears in three days. We took another bear yesterdy, called him in, but he was nothing to speak of size wise. Note the quota has been filled in 22 -23 If anyone can post some pics for me let me know. Thanks josh

July 2007 Guess the Score Contest
elkman replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Contests and Giveaways!
hopefully around 124 6/8 -
Self guided hunts can be good and bad, the thing you have to worry about is getting a ranch that has been shot out. people love to tell you there are lots of quality and the ranches have not had much pressure. Thats an often heard quote down there, but dont get me wrong it can be a great experience. I took a 117 buck down there last year on a self guided hunt. Best thing to do is go on a reccomendation from someone. Good luck, and make sure you have all your paper work and someone liscensed to bring back your hide and meat.

well i didn't draw an elk tag again. Suprise suprise, do they usually have left over tags in any of the western units. I did however draw a 16 deer tag. I have killed a couple of bucks in there in the past but havn't been in there in years. Anyone taken anything decent in there in the past? We hunted the wilderness in the past and plan to pack in there for the hunt. Good luck to all. Josh
-
I will keep my eyes open for some good ones. I will be up there ths weekend and next, i will let you know what it looks like in some of my old spots. Josh
-
Yea i just want a tag. I will be out in 16 several times this summer looking for some bucks. What hunt did you get. If its elk i will let you know what i see, and if you need a couple starting spots let me kno i can set u up. Josh

I put in for 16 & 15 archery. i usually draw one of those tags every year but not this year. The deer hunt i drew is rifle. WE were planning on packing into the wilderness, but not sure. Do they generally have any leftovers for elk any where. Archery
-
i drew a 16 deer tag, but i never saw the (fad) label on the hunt before i put in for it. Ths means fork antlered deer right, but the question is does that mean 2 point or larger? I dont have the regs to confirm. Anyone know. Thanks

Does anyone know if the carp have started moving up in roosevelt. Havnt been bow fishing yet this year and was wondering if the good shooting has started yet. Also what about canyon and saguaro Tilapia? let me know Thanks
-
Don't they spawn a couple of times a year, I cant remember. What about tilapia in saguaro, are they still there or did the die off like the bass from the algae. O well ill have to wait till august archery.

I havn't made it upto the black river on the san carlos in a couple of years. I was wondering if anyone had been up there lately and if the fishing for smallies is still as good as it was. My boys are wanting to go fishing and i couldnt think of a better place to avoid the major crowds, and catch a bunch of fish. Thanks in advance

Yea we went out for 3 days in unit b. WE saw three bears, all three were called in. The closest one was 13 yards from me at one point. Although he was a little guy. None we good enough to shoot. O well, maybe next time.
